Mercury thermometers contain silver or sometimes black liquid and are only particuarly used in meteorology and aquariums nowadays. If mercury was and still used in home/public thermometers there would be a lot more controversy on the news and far more recorded deaths from leaks in my opinion.

Mercury is said to be super toxic but I don't know about that. When I was a kid I used to break home thermostats and play with the mercury. My dad told me in school they would let kids play with big puddles of that.
