I'm sorry, but they are not better than the original cast. Bernadette Peters and Mandy Patinkin are both legends of the theatre, both at least partially due to this musical. They were flawless in their characterizations. These two have good voices, but the emotion of the song is nowhere near.
Dot's not actually using a Cockney accent. She's using a Norther English accent. The two are very different. It's most obvious when she says "up", "come", and "from".
They didn't do a bad job with the revival, but honestly, no one can beat Mandy and Bernadette, no exceptions. They made Dot sound cockney......and Mandy is probably one of the best tenors in B'way.
@carriewhite410 I believe giving Dot a cockney accent was a deliberate character choice on Jenna Russell's part. It established her as a working class woman. I think, though, this choice probably didn't resonate as much with American audiences...
The original painting by Georges Seurat, "Sunday Afternoon on the Island of Le Grand Jatte" is on display at the Art Institute of Chicago. And the canvas is almost this size. I had the utter joy and privilege of seeing and hearing these two great actors in this Broadway Revival imported from England. The music, lyrics and story captivate the soul unlike anything I've ever witnessed, especially if you are an artist.
wow...never heard it before, but saw Jenna Russell in Guys and Dolls in London, she is just a breathtaking performer. That set looks fantastic, I have a feeling I might have to look into this show...
Well, it was robbed by much flashier productions. It seems like as if in 1984 when this original production lost to a flashier, "La Cage", its always destined to become an artistic loser....
But it's those that stay in peoples hearts forever. <3 I love this musical, and this song if my favorite from it. It's the musicals that are less appreciated that really are the best, because they are not understood by the masses, and touches the people who do understand in the most amazing ways.
My God! Daniel and Jenna should have won the Tonys! They rox my sox! I saw them in this show back in May and I LOVED it! The show, especially this song, and the performances of Daniel and Jenna moved me to tears! Bravo Daniel and Jenna! Wish I could see this again!
this sucks..

They performed this together at the BBC's Prom for Stephen Sondheim, Sondheim at 80, and it was completely amazing!

Better than the Broadway original. These two have a better vocal blend than Bernadette and Mandy.

One of my favourite shows EVER. The hug at the end is so sweet. =] I'm soooo depressed that I can't see this before it ends.
