A player is guilty of violent conduct if he uses excessive force or brutality against an opponent when not challenging for the ball.
He is also guilty of violent conduct if he uses excessive force or brutality against a team-mate, spectator, match official or any other person.

So it has to be excessive force, which I don't really agree this was...

Taking the moral or ethical side of the decision will yes, win the crowd of the people and the other players; but it will not keep him his job. You're stating that he should let this slide, fully knowing that he could lose his job anyways? Are you stating tha tyou would say the same for a criminal as well? Same scenario, he knows full well that he could go to prison but will he do it anyways?

Clearly this rule was never intended to apply to those trespassing on the pitch. Once a person ventures onto the pitch, he is no longer a fan or spectator, he is a criminal. Let's use some common sense, refs. Probably too much to ask.

@Stinger49 If the ref had taken the word of the law, then he must be one hell of a referee as he would have been 100% confident in his own ability to see absolutely everything that goes on, on the pitch.
I am a referee myself and I know that with some things, you have to use a bit of common sense. This was a ridiculous decision.

@ROB2935 so then you know how difficult our job is to try and enforce the Laws of the Game. I'm not saying he made a good decision, he really had no choice. I had a spectator come after me one to time, before he got to me, a large player from the home team clocked him and he dropped, I thanked him, sent shook his hand and sent him off.We can make those determinations in lower level and not face as much scrutiny but at that level, you know had an assessor watching his every move.

@saxualguy In the Laws of the Game, Violent Conduct by a player against anybody on the pitch is punishable by sendoff. I"m sure this referee didn't like having to send off the player, but he has to keep applying the laws if he wants to keep his job and get better games.
Although I appreciate your views and opinions on this unfortunate event where the referee acted appropriately, I find absolutely no logic in you believing that I am a part of the problem. Please do explain.

@thathelwvideo If you remove the pads it is not Rugby at all, they are completely different games which have developed over the years from the same sport (association football). The pads are very small nowadays and they allow the players to hit each other much harder than in Rugby and above the waist. American Football uses feet just as little as Rugby Football (as it is called). Stop being a nerd about what sports people play in different countries and focus on more important things in theworld
