  • @jb97topgear As in the case of the Camry Hybrid, it uses the same system as the Prius. Simply put, it employs a planetary gearset as the core of its transmission. The planetary gearset are like three gears but their speeds linked in such way that, the speed of the third gear can be determined by knowing the speeds of the other two. So on the Camry, a electric motor spins one of the gear to vary the effective gear ratio from the engine to the wheels.

  • Pretty quick for a hybrid. Even though your only getting 5 MPG...

  • Comment removed

  • Hybrids don't have gears?

  • Some may like CVTs, but it will always be a manual transmission for me.

  • At least you got 5 MPG real time status during the 0-60 run lol

  • i think 6 speed auto would have given same fuel economy without sacrificing performance

  • 7.2 seconds official

  • That"s wake THE Fusion Hybrid is much faster..... And more fuel efficient

  • @rashaddancer that''s whut I was going TO say

  • @Turkeysitar That is whats UP :)

  • whats the B for on the gears on the dashboard

  • @dcrews95 Since it uses an e-CVT transmission with no gear changing, B is for engine-braking mode for things like going down mountain grades so you don't have to keep stepping on the brakes. It's the equivalent of down-shifting in a manual or conventional automatic transmission.

  • Will Toyota ever make a manual transmission hybrid?

  • CVT-failed inventions of the automotive era. Why? High Rev, and can't handle a lot of torque, that's why you never see them in high performance cars. Alternative? Dual or Twin Clutch. Like a Manual, but with two clutch plates, each with different gears 1,3,5 and 2,4,6. To shit it just changes clutches.

  • i have a 2008 camry hybrid,i find it really powerfull when floored,if you want more power,about 5,and better breathing,and sound,install a k&n air filter,i think it made alot of differance, i won't own a car a week without installing one

when you floor it on the fwy there is no waiting for the tranny to kick down--it just flies

at the upper speeds--and i average 36 mpg all the time--i love it

  • 7 seconds. Not bad at all for a hybrid

  • i thought ctv made by nissan ?!?1

  • What? It only has one gear?

  • @3ggt3 thats cvt...same thing used in jet-ski's and snow mobiles...it keeps on adding gearing basically. its not "1" gear...its unlimited gearing (till you get to top speed)

  • Holy crap, now that's embarrassing. It has a much faster time than my 4Runner.

  • Love the LED lights the 2007-2009 version have, and the clear taillights the 2010 Toyota Camry Hybrid has. This seems to be the only reasonable looking hybrid out there right now. (I don't like they style of the Honda Civic. It looks like a minivan on the front). I might also be into the Ford Fusion, but I cannot put my trust into American cars yet. Also, how come the Honda Accord stopped making Hybrids after 2005?

  • things wicked fast

  • yea CVT doesnt damage the engine nor is it bad for the engine. Its actually more efficient even though you're gassing it compare to a six speed transmission.

  • BTW: Why do people measure SPEEDO 0-60 when a device to PROPERLY measure acceleration costs only a COUPLE $? And in SOME cases, the difference between SPEEDO 0-60 and REAL 0-60 is UNBELIEVABLY HUGE (e.g. WHOLE SECONDS).

  • yea i agree with the ride, it cam get rough nd i hate it cause i thought something was wrong with the car itself nd its not

  • Fusion Hybrid all da way

  • Why Does The Hybrid Cars Uses Planetary Gears?

  • @miguelramirez360 The design allows them to drive the wheels with any mixture of either the gas engine or the electric motors so they can maximize efficiency and performance based on which combination will work best, as well as a seamless transition between the two. It also happens to make for nearly bullet-proof mechanical reliability, fewer moving parts, and lower weight over all.

  • We just had one of these as a rental........good on gas, bad on ride quality......

Lets just say I felt relieved to get out of this car and get into a truck with two solid axles and leaf springs.

I don't know if the regular camry is better or not, but if you ever find yourself in the hybrid......Get ready for the roughest ride of your life

  • @sirmasterpimp carmeys are awesome

  • Everyone is commmenting on the CVT, but for a hybrid car this is pretty quick! That was a decent 0 - 60 mph run

  • ok. i am no engineer or a mechanic so i don't know if the cvt transmission is a good thing but i cannot, for the life of me, get used to seeing that.

  • how the hell could you even get excited in the slightest about a cvt??? end your boring lives and go drive something different thats actually got some character or soul to it......

  • Just drove one of these about 20mins ago. They are truly an awesome car. The power lag when you put your foot down is annoying when your trying to get to 100 km/h as quick as possible. But they are just so sophisticated and have so many great features on them it's amazing!

  • WTF is with that? It doesn't shift very offen Lol.. Sounded like 1st gear to me.

  • @TheLoyale That's what I thought, the first time I heard a cvt.

  • are all hybrids CVT?

  • @iRaceAllDay Most of them are, because that's the important factor in them receiving the excellent fuel economy that they get. With the CVT power is at the wheels 100% of the time, and wasted power means wasted battery/fuel.

  • Damn I just hate CVT transmissions... But I love your reviews :-)

  • Accord hybrid = :)

    This = Shit

  • @wongmylesa another HONDA fan.. so why are you watching this? also Ford Hybrid got car of the year.. so yeah

  • @NoxNoctisUmbra Uh... Im watching this because i like toyotas... But this version of the camry is Shit compared to the accord Hybrid... And still is even though the accord hybrid is not in production anymore!!

Why are you mentioning ford ? I dont give a shit about those Dumbass cars!

They are FAIL... Dont try to compare one to a honda either -_-

  • @wongmylesa Ford really turn around with the Hybrid, they got most miles out of HONDA and TOYOTA. so I had to mention it. just like you had to mention HONDA lol

  • @NoxNoctisUmbra Ummm not really that great if you ask me. The accord hybrid had almost 260 HP and got 38 MPG on the highway. Many people claim getting arround 45 on the hwy as well. (the fusions EPA rating is 41 mpg. And the fusion tajes arround 8.5-9 secs to 60. In the accord hybrid... Try 0-60 in 6.6. :D. Don't get me started with the camry. It's just stank. Lol

  • @wongmylesa The ford Fusion Hybrid beat a world record for most MPG, the MGPs estimated on sites are with normal speed limit conditions.. also you do not buy a hybrid to have good acceleration, if you want good acceleration buy a Lexus H. But in reality, ford really dominated with new hybrid, even got car of the year for that. honda hybrid system is not as great as the Toyota one... do little bit of research, and not just HP and 0-60 times, this are hybrids not sports cars.

  • @NoxNoctisUmbra Uh the point being... I understand that MOST people buy hybrids for Efficiency... But my POINT IS... It is indeed one of the most fuel efficient cars.. Why do i say this ? Because it has 260 HP and It gets almost 40 MPG on the hwy... Tell me thats not unbelievable... Uhh the insight makes better efficiency numbers then prius for less the price! Same goes for fusion.

Accord hybrid was the best of all 3 worlds. Efficient,Luxury,And performance ! :D tell me thats not great ?

  • Hybrids don't have gears

  • @JeffyOwns Uhh... Just wanna let you know that about half of them do ! :D

  • it didn't even change gear

  • 0-60: 7.6 sec

  • 7.7 seconds to 60 mph. Not bad for a hybrid :D

  • tahoe hybrid is better. but i will take my 403 hp 6.2 liter. non gay ass hybrid.

  • wow that was the slowest 0-60 ever. i guess its expected from a hybrid though.. unless its the porsche spyder hybrid mwahaha.

CVT trannys are crap right now, its still too new. the civic CVT gets burned through in like 50K. i say wait a few more years, then they'll be better.

  • @eliwoohoo lol prius is much more slower.....

  • @eliwoohoo slowest ever? it has less than 200 hp and gets to 60 in less than 8 seconds. slow? whats not the slowest 0-60 lol?

  • @occckid123 the lotus elise has 189 hp, 0-60 time of 4.9

but i digress. you're right, its a decent speed for a commuter hybrid, and im sure its better than the prius. but its just kinda ironic watching the speedo slowly creep up in a 0-60 video. lol

  • @eliwoohoo lol an elise will break your spine on a crack in the road. cant get over a speed bump in the parking lot uses more gas and interior is crap and only has 2 seats is loud as hell. missing anything else? oh and cost wayy more. it is a fun car if u have money 2 throw around.

  • @occckid123 yeah, the elise is a ridiculously fun car if you have the money for it. and yea, its not the most comfortable ride. but the only reason i bring it up is because it blew away the stats you set: <200hp, <8 sec 0-60. i could have said any other car that fits too. integra gsr or r, civic si, old prelude vtec, mx-5, auto rx8, slk, tc, 2.5RS etc etc.

  • @eliwoohoo the lotus elise could have 189 hp, and could go to 60 in 4.9 seconds........Its because it ways as much as a go-kart......................This car could have more hp, but it ways more

  • YEAH! CVT! =D

  • no shift shock?

  • lmfao it works on batteries o.0 IDK

  • Hybrid, and CTV = no...

  • All hybrids these days have a one gear transmission, its suppose to be more efficent

  • 7sec 73

  • I like the CTV transmissions for not having to shift, cause some cars are really annoying with the shift quality and constantly changing gears, but I find the CVTs annoying as hell because whenever you step on the gas a little at highway speeds to get up a slight incline or to gently pass, they wind the engine really high. It gets so noisy and tiring, beside being horrible for the motor.

  • So, with all the noise and whatnot, do they at least give you the acceleration you need? I'm just asking cause I've never driven a CVT.

  • There isn't any noticeable power difference with a CVT and regular automatic. When you step on the gas to pass on the highway lets say, a regular automatic might downshift, a CVT revs up without any shifting. But in my experience they rev VERY high. I'm talking well over 4,000rpm just trying to pass. Horrible.

  • I'm not a fan of the CVT either. I mean for the most part, it won't work with my 5.7 V8, it'd just get ripped apart with the torque.

But looking at the concept of it, I thought the CVT's would actually allow you to use the lowest rpm possible that has a good amount of torque. Driving a car that's stuck on on a steady 5000rpm is about the worst thing you can imagine driving.

  • Well keep in mind that small engines these days rely much more on horsepower than torque. So a small engine hooked to a CVT is going to rev like crazy to make the most of its power. I'm not aware offhand of any V8 powered vehicles with a CVT, although surely there are some out there. I can't imagine if they exist they are pleasant to drive.

  • Oh yeah...I totally forgot.

I think I read somewhere CVT can't be used for really powerful engine because it's not durable enough? I'm not sure where I read it though.

  • @palebeachbum lexus ls has a v8

  • @wildbloodydragon my mom's altima is a cvt, and i hate it. to the people saying there isn't a noticeable power difference, they don't know what they're talking about. she owned a 2.5 altima from 2006 with a real automatic, and i remember thinking it was quick when i drove it. now she has a 2009 altima with a cvt, and it feels slow. don't get me wrong, it's smooth while cruising (as is every car) but when you're really getting after it, it's discomforting. it feels like the clutch is slipping

  • Have you timed it? How big of a difference is it making?

I mean damn dude, if it's that bad I should definitely avoid it.

  • i never actually timed it, but compared to my car, and compared to the previous altima's conventional automatic, it feels slower. putting my foot down in my mazda 6 at 40 mph, i can reach 80 in about 5 seconds. in the same amount of time for the altima, i can reach about 60 maybe 65. not only that, but the engine is bloody noisy with it. you need to rev it to get power, and it sounds awful. i recommend staying away from cvt's, although i've heard altima v6's work better with it than the v4.

  • The V6 is torqueier so that could be why.

  • @wildbloodydragon i've heard the v6 is better in general, although i can't see how a car with 270 bhp and front wheel drive with no special differential can be good. in real performance driving, i'm sure the car understeers and torque steers like a pig.

  • 270hp isn't anything to laugh at, it's just that it's a boring ass car to drive. The 2003 Impala SS has around 240hp and it's a thrill to drive.

  • @wildbloodydragon 270 is too much power for front wheel drive without some kind of differential or suspension modification to help cope with the power.

  • @palebeachbum its not horrible for the motor, they are designed to operate best at the rpm the cvt keeps them at under heavy accel. easier on it then typical transmission types

  • @palebeachbum It's not horrible for the engine. Engines are regularly tested at the factory at REDLINE revs (higher revs than the highest output/power) for a month (without interruption). But it surely is noisy. But if you like a petrol car, you don't mind that much. I understand people with turbodiesel engines dislike this a lot, because their cars run really low revs most of the time (as the torque is high very early in the rev range - hence most of the fuel consumption benefit).

  • @palebeachbum It could only be horrible for the engine, if the engine was cold or had an unrelated problem (low oil etc.). But I bet the car would know and adjust stuff accordingly.

  • @palebeachbum or you could do what most people who can drive do, and learn how to drive manual...

  • @palebeachbum Well if you want just get a cvt with paddle shifters and virtual gears... The rpms are lower in manual mode than the actual manual version of the same model.

  • @palebeachbum what does a normal car do with AT when you press the pedal to metal? right, it revs high.

You just need to drive different, if you want accelerate from low rpm you just need to press the pedal less.

The reason that it winds up, is always that you want/need more power that the engine can deliver at that rpm.

Just try it with a powerfull hybrid like a lexus, you will see, that it can deliver the power also with low rpm.

  • @palebeachbum actucally cvt's are great for the engine...idk what your talking about. You must have a shitty cvt cuz in my morano the cvt is as smooth as can be and never revs up high.

  • @palebeachbum

Ya but that's the entire idea. When your car needs to maintain a steady speed (ex. maintain a speed as you go up an incline) the CVT will keep your engine locked into whatever gear ratio is best for that situation. Basically, your engine winding high was actually better for it than if you were maintaining low RPM's and putting all that stress on the motor, it having to do so much extra work to get your car up that incline. The CVT was working perfectly.

  • @palebeachbum that's what u get, for buying a hybrid

  • @palebeachbum high revolutions really aren't bad for the motor.

  • @palebeachbum Engine's today are designed to run at high RPM's It also helps to move oil around the inside of the engine and clean out deposits of carbon. That is why cars like Honda's and Toyota's last so much longer they have clean running engines Designed to run at high RPMs.

  • lol CVT gearbox infinite gears...

  • Means infinite speeds. There are actually 3 gears in there, but they are a totally different kind of gears.

  • yay for having one gear

  • 0-100 kph (0-62 mph)

    8 sec. (0:04 - 0:12 )

  • lol the hybrids are coming out faster than the gas powered cars thats insane!

  • My dad has an 08 camry hybrid. Yeah it will get you where you need to go and it is pretty quick

  • That was quick!

  • Actually its an E-CVT, i got one, they are awesome!!

  • what kind of trans does that camry have??

  • continuously variable transmission.

  • probly cvt i think

  • I would think that a lumina would be about the same as this car. the 3100 SFI is dog slow. it only had 160HP and 185 torque. the 3100 was quick in the smaller GM cars but they sucked in the mid sized sedans. the lumina is actually lighter than the camry. the lumina is about 3500 pounds. and the camry is hybrid is almost 3700.

  • worken, 98 lumina has a GVWR of 4450lbs, So please don't try to tell me my American Steel is lighter than jap rice paper.

  • The GVWR is the combined weight of the car + maximum payload. A 1998 Lumina by itself (Curb weight) is 3496 lb, so workensmart is correct.

The reason the Camry is heavier is NOT because of the type of metal that is used. It is because the car has several hundred pounds of batteries. Take out the batteries and the Camry has a curb weight of around 3300lbs.

  • haha just smoked one of these in my Lumina, that weighs about 700 lbs more, not a chance taught them the important lesson not to try and pass someone with a hybrid.

  • wat type of engine does your lumina has? something tells me he wasnt trying

  • hmm wasn't trying that's why he gave a little chirp when he started huh, my lumina has a 3100 sfi it's the base of base lumina's and it still smoked this piece of shit get over it.

  • post a 0-120 video if your lumina and c if its quicker than the hybrid yota

  • not bad. CVT's are kinda creepy

  • wow very nice for hybrid i thought its something like 10s great job

  • 7.3 seconds great job

  • i understand its a hybrid but i didnt see the rpm's lol

  • tht sounds like a freakin boat.

  • it does.

  • you should see the v6 version of this car! completely ungodly! =)

  • That hybrid kicks ass!

  • That CVT sounds so funny

  • very good for a Hybrid

  • VERY NICE 7.66 SEC TO 60 MPH.

  • CVT transmission,

    no gear changes, no stopping,

you can acclerate from any speed and you wont need to be in the right gear.

  • Hi Dan, why does this camry didn't seem to change gears from 0-60?? is it a new technology?

I've fallen in love with your reviews by the way!! nice job! i've never seen anyone put a lot of attention reviewing mpgs in different types of vehicles before

  • Many thanks for your kind words, Vraddrag!

The Camry Hybrid uses a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) ... it's a little bit of engineering magic that allows the engine to stay at its most efficient RPM rate while accelerating. This saves gas and cuts down on emissions.

With a CVT, you'll hear the engine hit that pitch and stay there, as the gear ratios change seamlessly ... rather then the waaaa waaaaa waaaaaa that we've all been accustomed to.

we've taken a different approach to our

  • I Know the 2008 ALTIMA HYBRID is faster than this..LOL!Isn't it??Well it should be.ITS A NISSAN!!

  • its also a magic that a 3600 lb sedan with only less than 190 hp can do 0-60 below 8 seconds while the se v6 with 270 hp, 200 lbs lighter, finish 0-60 in 6.5 s. are you sure your car wasnt going donwhill??

  • Its probably a CVT Transmission

  • Japanese Technology exclusively. We (assuming you live in the USA) American's are very far behind with our vehicular technology.

  • American's are behind in electronics. I bet if Japan was to create an OS, it would blow the OSX out of the water! We all know Microsoft is wack! So that may just leave Linux because it's open-source. But back to the subject, the Japanese does it WAAAAAYYYYY better than Americans! But it would be nice to see some type of OnStar-like service from Toyota-Lexus.

  • This is weird because my Camry Hybrid does 0-60 in around 7.4 seconds and top speed of 120 mph. And my Hybrid V6 Lexus GS450h does 0-50 in 5 seconds flat.

  • Well microsoft being wack was unbeknown to me, ever heard of Microsoft Sync? Won tons of awards, and gets a lot of praise. Run this video and the 2010 fusion hybrid 0-60 video side by side lined up from where he starts, they are about exactly the same. The 2010 Fusion hybrid beat Camry, Altima, and Malibu hybrids in a comparison from caranddriver. So if japan makes cars so much better, a reputable source must be retarded.

  • no one cares about microsoft. with a marketing budget that could pay off the total national debt, still no one can manage to think of what the fuck MS actually does other than operating systems

  • I simply love CVTs! THey sound sooo modern and advanced! Very fit for the hybrid version.

would love to drive one of these, though I love my Volvo C30.

  • The C30 is one sweet little car. :)

  • Indeed, it is. But I love japanese american-way cars... like Carmy, Accord, Altimas, Infinitis and Lexus...

    :D

  • @DerAdventurer yeah i love my c30 too! very fun to drive!
