The tune doesn't actually go up in pitch (i think that's right, i'm not musically inclined), they used a variation of what is called Shepard Tones which is where they loop a few notes over and over and your brain just receives it as it going up continuously.

2 reasons. One we feel the movement of the music, second for people who are smaller as in either smaller hands and shorter arms. Movement back and forth helps with the hand position.

I seriously tried to get to the top in one run for an hour straight a few years ago, just to see if it was really endless. Turns out that Nintendo is REALLY good at programing; it's endless until you get the number of stars needed to unlock the star door rather than just letting you go through.

The stairs are infinite because the star door is "locked".
