Awesome little engine, neat video to watch. Personally, I think I would only enjoy that ride once, after all that just to get to the top, the fun would be all gone doing it everyday.
they sprinkle sand on the tracks so it has traction! wow and the brakes??? the steepest tracks in the world, build 100 years ago with huge cliffs and precarious bridges....wtf i would not get on that train.
@0812201 1. D.I.Y., the more handy you are, the less you pay for the rest. Inclusive new spare parts. If you have enough tools, time and experience, you'd be able to build brand new engine.
2. Prevention is always cheaper than corrective repairs
3. Boiler is to be washed out regullary after 5-8 th run.
4. Feedwater softener agent + special high temperature oil for lubricaing cylinders and sidings could be normally purchased as well as other operational material.
Yeah, the shays also have efficient drafting because the gearing makes the engine run faster, so there is no long interval betwewn drauft pulls even at low speeds.
Not everyone used the American system of sand domes and air pumps. Elsewhere, there was one sand box per delivery pipe, close to rail level. The dramatically shorter pipe meant that sand could be blown out with steam, rather than air, without clogging..
OK, so this might be a dumb question but why don't they break the coal into the right sized lumps before they load it, rather than having a guy sitting on the roof doing it on the move? And why didn't they fit steam-powered sanders?
About 10 hours' journey by train from Lucknow should take you to Siliguri. It is to the East of Lucknow, and in the state of West Bengal. Take the ear;ly morning train (7 am) that's the steam, train., the others are diesels i think. This train will take you to the hill station of Darjeeling(on the himalayas), also in the same state- West Bengal. Have Fun !!
150 years and running. A testimony to British Engineering.
And I will thank the Indian Government for being sensible(which it so rarely is) and letting the steam run in a few places like this rather than phase it out completely.
For those who've never done it, this is probably one of the most beautiful journeys man could ever have! it goes through forests filled with Elephants !! the train has to stop at times to let the elephants cross1!!! :D
Ive travelled on that toy train to Darjeeling in India, it was in 2004 on a mountaineering camp in the Himalayas, the journey was amazing, I have preserved that ticket of Rs 4 (about 7-8 cents).....the train also stops at Ghum which is the worlds second highest train station!
it is still in function, it a daily routine local train, there is one more train like this "fairy queen" its a 150+ years old train and it is already booked for next two years !
That is one great train journey! I hope Indian Railways will preserve it for its uniqueness and not just abandon to rust like they do with everything else in India....
Hey I have this whole episode on tape i could try and upload it, I love watching those CP engines role in and out of Calgary. I was wondering was there any other episodes that have trains in it other then this one?
we have about 10+ hours of (really good like this) train doc's on vhs. Ugh! I think we'll try and get them up on here.. "Wheels of steel" and "metal monsters" were the only two from extreme machines (i think). "the last train across canada" covers Via (more poeticly)

i just CAN'T believe there is a machine THIS TOUGH in the world!
whoever built it needs no finer praise for their work than this, daily running after 70 years after!
this definitely prooves that steam engines are the toughest, most durable types of machines known to man!
it would be great if modern industry would, with its modern alloys, knowledge and precision, further improve on these already awesome machines!
bluemoondiadochi 1 year ago
what more proof is needed a steam engine can outdo any other type of engine?!
that little locomotive is just about the toughtest piece of machinery i know of!
makes me drool at what the modern industry, with its new accuracy, alloys, and solutions and could do to improve on these already great machines!

That's not right about the highest railway station in the world.
Cripple Creek, CO 10,000ft. It was established in 1896. Midland Terminal, short line and Floesent-cripple creek.
Oh what about the pikes peek railway, teminates at 14,100 feet. It was also established in 1889 .
The Durango-Silverton railroad that is on this clip goes up to 9,308ft. Also built in 1800s.
I like seeing old trains, but
I wish these people could get their facts strait.

I'm still abit confused as to how you can make a show about steam locomotives without covering the UK - the birthplace of steam rail travel.
