How to not end the "from" question with a preposition? The no end of sentence prepositions rule is just a rule that came about in the 19th century was English, a Germanic language, was going through a Latinization process.
In the conversation between PZ and TF, did they actually say that only science should be supported in schools and only by scientists? If not then you've made a lovely strawman here.
In the clip you showed PZ was saying that there were people not even interested in education on the board, and in my books that's a problem. School boards should be occupied by people who want to give children a complete education, and I believe that's what PZ & TF were getting at.
Thunderf00t's an elitist douche bag, who probably got through school on mommy and/or daddy's bank account, and if punched in the face would probably cry and call the police.
Theres a difference between making economic decisions, making do, and not say, giving every kid a laptop with vector calculus. However, there is a difference between this and the actual behaviour of school boards PZ myer's condems, which is spending tax payers money to promote a christian conservative view of history, and promoting Creationism.
On other points, well spoken. I actually agreed with both of them, TF and the other one. University is valuble, and there are fundamental flaws in it.
You know what this was a great video. Tf00t was a bit of an ass but pogobat as well was speaking out of his butt. Over all i think school boards have too much power at times like in texas. I just would enjoy some moderation once in a while from everyone it would make the world a better place.
Textbooks and most other kinds of books are becoming widely available to the public online for free through pdf format and any other web format. Mises.org offers tons and tons of economic and liberty oriented books on their website for free. I am sure there are similar websites out there that offer books to people free of charge.
Maybe school boards cant be specialists in everything, but to remove important parts of biology, change history books for the worst, and promote teaching ID in schools? I don't fucking think so.
My biggest complaint is one I commonly find myself making. How is it that academia is somehow not "the real world". Professional academics put in hours, make money, have superiors. They also pay the same taxes as everyone. So I'm often left wondering what distinction is actually being made. Everyone is biased by their experiences, but the whole "not the real world" often comes across as condescending and poorly defined.
I am referring, of course, to the Texas Board of Education (*cough cough Indoctrination! cough*). Perhaps I am simply unaware, but from what I know, very few states actually do this (I suspect Alabama comes in close second). It isn't just about saving money anymore, it's about preserving a deeply Christian atmosphere and LYING to the students about the truth.
Well, I thumbed the video up because I genuinely liked the concise way in which you presented your thoughts, although I still have to side with Thunderf00t, at least PARTIALLY. Yes, school districts need to save money and sometimes they make choices that science-oriented people don't particularly like. However, when a school board goes out of its way to change textbooks to fit ideology, and even utters the words "Someone has to stand up to the experts!" there's a problem. (cont'd)
While I agree with most of what you say, the fact still remains that there are morons that get elected to school boards who are not just ignorant of science, but actually anti-science. Those people promote ridiculous and totally unsupported ideas about ID and even try to rewrite history (see Texas). So yeah, in those cases, I totally agree with the "intellectual elitists" when they say that those people aren't qualified to make those decisions.
Yes there can be intellectual elitism in academia but I have to agree with Thunder and Pz on one thing, uneducated deciding the curriculum and cutting out parts they don't like is not acceptable. For example the Texas school board deciding to rewrite history or school boards removing evolution from biology. I realize it is impossible to be an expert on everything but maybe a good method is to ensure the school board is filled with those of different backgrounds
@vnorthru cont'd. Have someone with an arts degree and someone else with a science degree and try to keep the board balanced so the whole curriculum is represented. Or even better, take the curriculum away from the school board and have another committee that sets curriculum standards. I do agree with you on the budget issues. The school boards do need to attempt to give the best education with the funding they have which can be a tricky issue to navigate since there is constraints
@vnorthru Not all curriculum is decided that way. In my district, we have a curriculum committee comprised of teachers and administrators. They wade through all the books, etc and make recommendations to the school board. The materials are available to them to view before the vote but the board itself isn't out looking for it.
@debbieomi That I'm fine with, my issue is more when a school board without expertise is deciding on curriculum since these tends to lead to, for example, removing evolution from biology. This is why I suggested the idea of a committee, such as the one you described, being responsible for curriculum. So it seems your district has got a good system. I think the only concern I may have is if the school board decides to go against the committee's recommendations.
Question:How do you address the people who are intentionally anti intellectual?Remember we live in a country where the really smart kids get their asses kicked just for being really smart. Most Americans don't want to be educated. And they have been taught to hate anyone who appears to be smarter than them.
I like your point but, with regards to the PZ mires thing. I lived in Kansas until I was 22. The kids in the class in front of me and two years after me didn't learn about evolution in biology. I don't know how you teach biology without evolution but anyway you could be right but in Kansas you should give the man a little credit.
Very down to earth.....at least you didn't blow a raspberry at the end. On a side note, I kept thinking that was a black bra hanging behind you and then realised its two hats. :D
Your arguments are persuasive and well reasoned, decojuicer. However, I would just like to point out that Dan's rhetoric and delivery style are uncannily similar to those of Glen Beck. I find it hard to believe that this is just coincidence. Anyone who deliberately models himself on Glen Beck is going to struggle to get any respect from me.
Really good video bud. Glad someone brought this up again. It rubbed me the wrong way then, and it still does now. I think a lot of what is currently going on can be traced right back to Thunder's particular brand of intellectual elitism. Which for me, started really showing itself back when that video came out. Higher education is something I wish i had stuck with as well. But I definitely do not look down on anyone who never gets it and it's no reason for anyone to think they are better.
When I was in school, the universities set the academic goals for the schools. The universities would tell the schools what the students needed to be able to do to get into university, and it was up to the schools to get the students there.
For those that didn't want to go to university, there were job skills classes you could take at school which would give you certification when you graduated. My cousin for example gratuated as a certified plumber and now 5 years on, co-owns his own business.
This country would have plenty of money for education if it wasn't so damn concerned with policing the fucking globe. Us citizens and politicians have priority problems IMHO.
Interesting. Seems Tf00t is taking a large amount of information from that guy from a very vague video. I feel that he should have gone into specifics about what it was about his collage that was "getting in the way of his education." What subjects? What methods? All these details would be needed to properly address his arguments.
Throughout my education, the best teachers were the ones who actually had real world experience that could direct their lesson plans to fit what we students were actually likely to encounter in "the real world". If you spend your life as an academic, you only know theory.
Deco, I agree. I was just a computer IT person at big computer company in the Silicon Valley. I had some college, but no degree. They hired a guy who had 2 or 3 advanced programing degrees Well I got a call to go fix his computer. This guy looked down on everyone and made sure you knew he had degrees and was really smart. I got to his desk and he was ranting about how important he was and how I should fix his pc asap. Pc had no power. Mr genius had stepped on the power strip switch.
If it weren't for ditch diggers, i wouldn't look so successful and happy. thank you ditch diggers.
