We like stories, yes, but is he really saying that people around this Pleistocene campire believed everything they were told? No. Being a sucker comes from somewhere else.
When it comes to the stock market, I'm glad people are that way. Because it creates profit opportunities for those of us who are least that way. If we're patient enough to wait for reality to force itself upon the anecdote-trusters.
@2001Horatio I just think it's hilarious when some slovenly, undisciplined glutton tells me about our state of being. It's a disconnect that bends my head somewhat. :) Much like your likening my amusement at chubby fuks letting me know about my body to folks believing in invisible space daddies. Dullard. lolol

This is one reason why books by Austrian economists, ESPECIALLY, don't appeal to me at all. And the same reason why I loathed a lot of my Econ classes, what with all the bullshit models and stupid-ass, abstract terms like "Pareto efficiency" rather than empirical evidence and sound data to back this shit up more often.
If he'd just said something like stories were a common form of communication when language was developing, and it's what we're still best at, that would have made sense, but the whole bit about how much of our DNA we have in common with chimps was off in left field.
My comment was in response to the video. Don't take it out of context. I didn't say that animals can't communicate, I was saying that chimps don't tell stories like humans do. The guy was making some bogus claim that we aren't good at the stock market because we like stories because we are so closely related to chimps. The human speech centers in the brain are MUCH more developed than a chimp's.
If he'd said that we're still like some earlier hominid, it might have made some sort of sense, but no, he says we like stories because we're so close to chimps when chimps can't tell stories.
We like stories because we're 99.?% the same as an animal that can't tell stories.
AARRRGGGG!!!
Go pick fleas off your mate you stupid monkey. (You're not evolved enough to count as an ape).
while showing a picture of an orangutang (not monkey, or a chimp). and I'd like this dumb-fuck to explain how monkeys love narrative when they don't even have language. Does he even know that chimps aren't monkeys? One big difference between us and chimps is the parts of our brains we use for language. Chimps can't even learn syntax.
I'm wondering about the same thing :S Story telling has more to do with culture and there's a huge difference between chimp "culture" and human culture...

This is what I have screamed to the world for 30+ years.
This is why I have become sick of movies and tv (well, not entirely).
They are nothing but dumb entertainment.
Great job, Barry Ritholtz!

It's less desirable in other areas of life.

@whoo689 You should check out the Zeitgeist Movement, if you haven't already.

I must be an outlier- I kind of prefer data and stats to stories, at least when it comes to empirical shit.

@Primalxbeast primates do have their own form of language & can learn ours as well, including hand signs.

@slonamu The market probably is rigged, but there's still logically anticipatable profit opportunities for the small-time individual investor.
