  • die alone?? we all die alone! whats the difference? the difference is that he died by defending his own beliefs

  • how long did it take u to read?

  • you suck

  • Krakauer missed the point, entirely.. This book should have been a cautionary tale about mental illness.. McCandless was a textbook gender confused schizophrenic... It literally oozes from the text, repeatedly..

The fact that Krakauer repeatedly asserts that McCandless was not mentally deficient, despite the assertions of those who actually knew McCandless, who all felt he was mentally unstable, is hard to explain... I don't know if Krakauer is just stupid, or if he had a different motive.. IDK

  • @eppeone how the hell did krakauer miss the point? Mccandless wasnt a schizophrenic ur fucking retarded. mccandless wanted to do certain things..reach his goals perhaps. From what information he found krakauer did an amazing job with the book. Haha shit dude lets see you gather up as much information about a person that was hard to identify and what he did.

  • Wonderful review. :) Really well done, thanks, man!

  • you need to do this for middlesex! haha keep it up.

  • I never heard of Chris McCandless, so I looked him up on Google. Alaskan park ranger, Peter Christian, thinks McCandless had a death wish, consciously or otherwise. I think his recklessness might well indicate a heedlessly desperate escape from society by a person who no longer much cared whether he lived or died, as long as he got away. But I think it is impossible for anyone who didn't know him really well to be sure of anything about him.

  • I would like to point out here that I have not seen the movie based on this book, nor do I plan to.

  • @ghostwriter511 thanks. I will skip the movie and go buy the book.

  • @ghostwriter511 can you tell me 4 open ended questions for ch13?

  • i would request more story telling daniel. this is needed.

  • I've actually submitted several short stories for publication which subtly push the themes I believe, but so far none have been picked up. I'm still trying. One day maybe.

After all, how old was Daniel Quinn when Ishmael was published?

  • found your review more engaging than the movie.

  • Daniel - you might have done this already, but search Chris McCandless on youtube.... there are a lot of videos about the actual Bus and a lot of photos of the guy.

  • hah,.... I had to read this one for summer reading...

everyone hated it in my class, and I laughed at them.

  • like fucking reading rainbow lol

  • Awesome review. Forager and author Samuel Thayer was livid about the author's description of his death:

"The best-selling book and popular movie "Into The Wild" depict Chris McCandless dying by being poisoned by a wild plant. There is no factual basis for this claim; it is wholly fabricated. There is absolutely no evidence that Chris was poisoned by any plant, or that any toxic plant contributed to his death in any way...."

If you want to read the rest, google "Samuel Thayer Into the WIld"

  • wow, great book review :) Might actually give it a shot. Seems like a fascinating writing style.
