Krakauer missed the point, entirely.. This book should have been a cautionary tale about mental illness.. McCandless was a textbook gender confused schizophrenic... It literally oozes from the text, repeatedly..
The fact that Krakauer repeatedly asserts that McCandless was not mentally deficient, despite the assertions of those who actually knew McCandless, who all felt he was mentally unstable, is hard to explain... I don't know if Krakauer is just stupid, or if he had a different motive.. IDK

I never heard of Chris McCandless, so I looked him up on Google. Alaskan park ranger, Peter Christian, thinks McCandless had a death wish, consciously or otherwise. I think his recklessness might well indicate a heedlessly desperate escape from society by a person who no longer much cared whether he lived or died, as long as he got away. But I think it is impossible for anyone who didn't know him really well to be sure of anything about him.
I've actually submitted several short stories for publication which subtly push the themes I believe, but so far none have been picked up. I'm still trying. One day maybe.
After all, how old was Daniel Quinn when Ishmael was published?
