An exclusive book chronicling the history of the penitentiary and the paranormal is going to be released on March 22! You can preorder it on Amazon. It's called Images of America: West Virginia Penitentiary
I've never been in the penitentiary, but the funny thing is, i live right in wheeling :) i seriously have my hopes up to go and take a tour and learn about it :)
btw... the red line wasnt a gun line... they didnt shoot people that went past it. i was there today and the gaurd who guided us told us it was the single file line all inmates walked single file down that line... including us when we took the night tour later that night
Thats weird because thats what our guide told us. The booth at the end they said was where a guard could sit with a rifle and it lined up perfectly with the gun line so any time an inmate crossed the line they could fire to protect the guards leading them down. We mustve had different guides. Lol.
When we took this tour a year ago, we were told it was a GUN LINE at one point - out of necessity. Perhaps the use of it changed much later. Interesting that guides told us different things.
from what i hear in the room with paper mache indians, you can hear laughter. the artwork done by an inmate in the cafeteria was done by a color blind man. and another thing is that the prison break drill, theres apparently someone that goes over the wall and disappears and goes over another wall and disappears again....
They told us about the colorblind man. They said him and a friend did it. He actually painted and his friend mixed the colors. Pretty awesome if you ask me.
My mom worked there from 89 till closing and let me and my brother have a personal tour during the final days. The only times I was scared was when the doors closed behind us. Spookiest rumor I ever heard was that there's a light bulb still burning to this day in Receiving and they lost the keys shortly shutting down the unit.
That sucks! That light has to be costing them up to 3$ a day. A locksmith would be a good investment. I want to do a night tour of this place but it's 600$.
It was sometime around late summer or fall. I remember there being loads and loads of rain. And it was easy to miss a lot of the paintings. There was so much to take in. My brother and I kind of drifted from the group a little sometimes we got so distracted. =) Glad you enjoyed the video.
The tour was fantastic. They told so many stories and by the end of it you really appreciate the history there, you can feel it. By the end you definitely have a sense of appreciation for your freedom. Its amazing. I definitely recommend taking a tour!
