Hi Ed, fantastic video's. I'm thinking of getting myself a Darkstar'd Joe Osborn from Lakland. Do you think these pickups are worth the extra Cheddar or should i opt for the standard options or maybe even the Chi's? Cheers bud.
@thefunkmaster147 - Dark Stars are very nice pickups, and so are the Chi's. The Lakland stock pickups... also nice. But they all sound different. Rather than try to describe HOW they are different... try to look for some sound samples. I have some DS samples up at my website: thebasswhisperer (dot) com. You can hear the Chi's in this video, and a few others with that green bass. And I've also got a few vids with the stock Lakland/Hanson pickups.
Yes, it is. I just signed a deal with GuitarInstructor(dot)com to do a series of lessons, and this was my "audition" video. It won't be going on their site as I am now filming in HD and all the lessons need to be the same quality. So... when I'm ready to unleash the new stuff, this lesson will go up as a promo for the site. Hold tight, it's coming.
Hey Ed as always very cool playing, and a new technique for me, I was getting this kind of effect using a old sock near the bridge............. not good for a quick style change! Dan
Hey, put a sock in it okay? ;0 I actually use foam sometimes if I'm going to play the whole gig like that - blues, country, old school stuff. But there's nothing like doing it yourself and having the control, plus you can switch back and forth.
Thanks.... I getting what you mean, as I guess you can control the flavour (hey i'm English!!) of the note more. I know you don't push gear, but is that one of those Genz 2-12's you got there? Really digging Jeffs new shuttle stuff, Was thinking of getting some of the gear sent over, its rare in the UK. Still can't believe how such a little unit has got so much voice.
I was going for a JO with BG neck (w/ Chi's), but the BG neck was a little too wide. The 44-02 neck feels similar to that of my 08 MIA P bass, which I love.
Well, I have 4 Laklands and I would not describe their sound as weak. No way. If you don't like the way they sound on other youtube videos take into account how they were recorded, and who is playing them! They kick ass. So... better yet, go play one yourself and THEN make up your mind.
lol I was gonna ask you to do a review of the lakland skyline too, but I ended up buying one anyway. 55-01 for $525 from craigslist. huzzah. My 2nd favorite bass so far (most favorite being 55-02 lol) Lakland just sorta has a way of kicking major ass. They're a godsend.
Wonderful tone, just great! I really enjoy watching and listening to your stylings ... I palm muted for years but I had no idea it was called that until I started watching YT vids ... haha ... it's nice to have names for things eh? :P
Yes, they are humbucking ChiSonics, and yes I have the coil tap. Depending on the pickup placement, you can definitely get a P type tone. The single coils are nice too. They are more open sounding, brighter and not as loud - which is typical of singles vs. hbs. On a JO, the front pickup might not be exactly in the right spot for a P tone, but it would definitely have some good chunk to it. I love these pickups, they are hifi and organic at the same time.
Hey Ed, you really rock! Love the Lakkie too. I'd always kind of shunned the idea of palm muting, and have experimented with foam etc, but watching you play that demo I realise my thumb plucking can improve markedly with the practise. Thanks for the inspiration. Cheers Andy in Oz
Who needs a lesson on this. Just stick a piece of foam under the strings at the bridge. This may be cheating but it needs no practice and it frees time to practice things that are much more useful (at least to me) :-).
Well, if you can't hear the difference between this technique and a piece of foam, then obviously you DON'T need this lesson. Glad that you're spending all your free practice time on more valuable things.
Didn't you notice the smiley face. My comment was somewhat in jest. However, as I was listening to this I stuck a wad of fabric under the strings of my bass at the bridge and I was able to get it so sound almost exactly the same. This is a method used by a lot of bass players (myself included) who may only want to get this sound on rare occasions. It does work. I owned a bass once about, 35 years ago, that actually had a piece of foam built into the bridge cover (which I promptly removed).
I will admit that if getting this sound is an important part of your repertoire It would be better to learn some kind of muting technique as it would allow you much more control.
Well, sorry I didn't notice your smiley face. Hard to tell when people are being pissy or not. YT seems to have more than it's share of dickheads, glad you're not one of them!
Anyway, I use foam all the time on flatwound strings, in fact I still palm mute when I use foam. The hand pressure, and the skin itself do create a different tone I find. But, I find the mute technique to be better for just occasional use - this way I don't have to cram anything under the strings for one tune.
I sometimes mute with with my left hand like Rocco Prestia and sometimes with my little finger on my right hand but I haven't done it enough to consider myself really good at it, hence the bridge trick.
The Rocco Prestia left hand finger mute trick is great but it takes practice, and it also requires a pretty hard to pluck with the right hand. If you've ever seen his instructional video he explains the technique very well, and you can also see he plucks the living hell out of those strings. Rocco Prestia and the Bass Whisperer FTW
For me the toughest thing about left hand muting is that it requires a lot of movement with your left hand up and down the neck. Since I play a fretless it means being very careful for proper intonation. The biggest problem I have with palm muting is that it requires plucking with index finger and/or thumb, A technique I have little skill at.
Awesome mate!, need to practice this technique for sure - sure does create a cool sound =).
If you don't mind me asking, what is your all time favorite bass in terms of pliability + tone? I'd love to know seeing all of your experience in the bass-world. Cheers and thanks again for the awesome videos!
Favorite bass? Impossible to answer. I have many different kinds of bass, and have owned hundreds over the years. I do tend to prefer Fenders and Fender style instruments with bolt on maple necks like Lakland, MM, G&L. I have a Zon that is amazing, and a few others, but I choose them based on what type of gig they are best suited to. My favorite bass is the one I'm playing on any given night!
Ed Friedland is one of the all time greats on Bass! Your books about Walking Bass lines helped my life as a professional Bass player get started! Keep up the amazing work!
The full Eastwood review should be going up very soon, I wait until it comes out in Guitar World... probably first week of May. The Sterling review will be another month. This lesson is a test fro a project I have in the works, it may or may not end up on YT.

Did you ever hear from the Bassmuting? Its an invention from the Dutch bassguitar craftman Ellio Martina, that will do the job for every bassmuting.

(pulls short pants up past naval and in Bobby Hill voice) Vat are you talking about? (/Bobby Hill voice, pushes short pants down)
I guess the 44-02/44-07's neck is closer to that of a Jazz being 1.6" compared to the 1.5" JO and 1.75" BG.

I really love the look of lakland....though I haven't seen one in reality.
From all the videos on youtube I feel that the sound of lak is a bit...weak...small volumn I meant...
This new pickup gives new feeling..but still not the one I want..
I was thinking about buying a lakland skyline, and I'm trying to make myself like its sound..but hardly..
Could you please do a longer review with different sound (would be great if you have a skyline..but anything will do)?
Thank you so much!

I have some questions about your bass, mostly about the pickups.
Are those the humbucking Chi-Sonics?
If so, do you have a coil tap?
Have you ever compared them to the single coil Chi-Sonics?
Can you approximate a P bass tone from the neck pickup alone? (it seems that's what your doing in this video)
I'd appreciate any feedback, as I'm about to order a Skyline Joe Osbourn and thinking of getting some Chi-Sonics. ~thanks
