You are correct the difference between 4wd and awd is small, but people make a huge deal out of it just like differential lockers. Normally people use 4wd to indicated a part time xfer case that 'locks' the front and rear driveshafts so 100% rotation goes to front and rear axles always. Awd usually means "full time 4wd" which requires a center diffferential to split torque front and rear. Theoretically, you could still get stuck and only have 1 tire spinning because of this.
The electronic aids in the freelander are different to the dicovery and range rover even the terrain response is different. The terrain response has less modes and the traction control doesn't start working as quick. Its basically a dumbed down version of the discovery or range rover.
The difference between a Four Wheel Drive and a All Wheel Drive is a Four Wheel Drive has low range were a all wheel drive may have a centre diff lock but no low range.
