  • Absolutely Beautiful!!!!

  • Who would ever willingly choose to play the oboe.... so weird.

  • This is the most serious I have ever seen her. What happened to the smiles..the playful reparte' with the conductor??? But magnificent as always. I think she was somehow unhappy with herself in the final movement. Seems she was under some kind stress this day.

  • 07:06...sustained trumpet....WEAAAAAAAAAK!

  • christian ferras = still the king

  • Angle! !!

  • Beautiful rendition...but no Christian Ferras.

  • @badassgt Duh, she's a woman. lol XD

  • Look at the guy in the pink checking her out in the beginning! ;)

  • @littlejim638 hahahaha bad moment to be caught on camera

  • I watched Sarah Chang performing the Sibelius concerto live 2 days ago and it was AMAZING!!!

  • See my channel for the same performance complete in a single video, and in better quality. There's even direct links to the beginnings of each movement in the description. Sorry for the plug, but it's the same thing just improved so...

  • @Lemon77UG

Thanks your video and sound much better

  • you see all those players looking at the notes while they r playing and looking at notes to be ready while they r not playing? You see Sarah Chang's eyes are closed the whole time?

So.... What is the purpose of the conductor?

  • @spacesauze Actually... Sarah Chang's eyes are closed because the conductor is supposed to follow HER. And believe it or not, the players DO look up at the conductor for entrances/ weird things that accompany a performance.

  • @littlejim638 Ok so the purpose of conductor shines BEFORE the actual concert. During practice conductor plays his or her role by telling everybody how the music should sound. (soft/harder/faster/slower/etc)

So that being said what you hear in concert is a creation of the conductor. If you pay attention closely certain concerto conducted by different conductor, they sound slightly different even though they r using the same notes.

So yea that's why the conductor is teh king. scary huh

  • @johannsebastienbach

No it's not the hardest concerto; there are many others. BUT if you were to look at the FAMOUS ones, this would be among the top.

  • She's perfect and has a great sound. I'm so anxious to listen her in Rio in November.

  • 5:23 and on ALWAYS GETS TO IT. I smile every time!

  • sgkl ;alksja her DRESS <3

oh, and her playing is brilliant :') welp. looks like i have to practice.

  • She slides it up at 8:44 - 8.49, while Heifetz, Wicks, and Kremer all strike cleanly at the high note (i.e. making 2 discrete notes) instead. Personally I perfer Heifetz-Wicks-Kremer way. What do you think?

  • Screw the 8 people that disliked this video!!! you all can go to hell!!!!

  • Ohh, Sarah Chang. (:

  • This is one of the best performance of Sibelius I have heard, maybe the best. Great viola solo after 10:00.

  • @martinstoss I mean, ... after 6:00

  • I dont like her dresses i like janine jansen more then sara

  • @kateviolin9999 a most insipid comment

  • 6:53 - 7:12 favourite part

  • yo soy trombonista pero esta mujer es LA TÉCNICA hecha CARNE. Braviiiiiiisimooooooo

  • its good beside the fact that it looks like a boob is about to pop out lol

  • this is by far the hardest violin concerto eva, beethoven's violin concerto is like novice play then not to mention mozart's just like little exercise

  • @johannsebastienbach Sarah did say that the 3rd Movement is like Sibelius threw every violin technique known to man for that movement! (i.e arpeggios trills)

  • I adore her dresses <3 I always comment that on her vids xD I want to play like her; with perfect intonation :)

  • @DesiFuyuko I can relate.

  • Very intense perfomance. it is a pleasure to listen to.

  • Somehow I think sibelius and dvorak have something in common, they both extensively used their coutries' folk music as materials or their larger work and as a result thei rmusic has a very strong 'folk' feel

  • she seems unwell.. not because of her facial expressions. I hope she gets some rest.

  • Awesome performance of the Sibelius VC. I was there at the concert in the Concertgebouw Amsterdam and I liked the dress too.

  • She is blatantly fucking it.

Personally, I get arrested for fucking in public.

  • no me agrada

  • no me gusta

  • Hey I saw her wear that dress when she was here in Phoenix.

Amazing playing. She never fails to blow me away.

  • AT THE BEGINIG SHE PRODUCES ONE OF THE BEST SOUND I HAVE EVER HEARD OF THIS VIOLIN CONCERTO...but then in the 3th movement her rudeness with her bow was too much.

  • @darkviolin13 although some listeners find that rudeness so much better than other violinist's clean approach... but I guess it is all about personal taste

  • OMG WTF are those 2:53 - 2:57 looks like hand grenade launchers hahaha

  • @BlueMoonLightDreams "hand" grenades don't need launchers hence HAND grenade :)

  • @1qaz6yhn5tgb hahah oh shit i just said something stupid, i meant a launcher. haha

  • omg how elegant is her gress it matches with her completely! she is hot hehe

  • Comment removed

  • wonder if she's insured to walk down 30 stairs in high heels carrying a guarneri

  • lol @ 00:40 you can totally see the guy staring her down...

  • well that's a nice dress

  • OHHH ! other than the pitch, i thought she were FANTASTIC ! of course the pitch can never be 100% perfect but i think she had a MUCH better pitch in her other performances. Honestly, I think that she is more musical than Hilary Hahn because when she plays i am filled with so much emotion ! once again she has wowed me.

  • That viola player better work it out. Sarah Chang, you made mistakes, but it's okay....because you're fierce. <3

  • In my opinion, as a violinist and a knowledgeable fan of violinists, I believe that Sarah's version was not only flawed in intonation but also in her bow control (scratching a lot). I believe that Heifetz's and Ilya Kaler's versions are much better. I recommend them!

  • @TempoFurioso i agree with you about guys who complain about everything to prove something, but i just dont like her, i prefer other versions :)

    thats all

  • please, the violin is not something which can be played with absolute perfection... if you meticulously look for very minute and small imperfections like a fraction of a fraction of a fraction out-of-tune note, you will never like anything on this planet... what if she played some notes a bit off? does it make the performance ugly? look beyond the technicality... there is a lot of beauty here... you people who keep complaining about technical errors just want to prove that you know some stuff

  • @146juansebastian ,was just a comment, i simply dont like it.

    and she's out of tune...

  • @timburton16 out of tune does not necessarily make a performance ugly... if you meticulously mind small things like that, you wont find anything beautiful... acoustic scientists themselves say it is impossible to play perfectly in tune... its an illusion... and you say 'listen a little bit more carefully?' why convince yourself it is ugly by minding something you normally would not notice?

  • She really knows how to make a musical appearance!

  • 5:28 damn!! she´s out of tune

  • @timburton16 playing perfectly in tune, especially with the violin, especially with a piece like this, is impossible. sound scientists themselves pointed out that playing perfectly in tune is only an illusion. and to point that out from a master, how do you play then? you probably play more out of tune notes than she ever would

  • @timburton16 Because she is human too ! :P

  • @timburton16 She is so not out of tune, please listen a little bit more carefully!

  • how old is she in this video?

  • Nice dress, nice violin, beautiful figure and face, amazing playing, makes good money playing the violin. She wins at life.

  • If this does not bring a tear to your eyes, check your pulse for you are probably dead!

  • wow.. she's my favourite violinist..

  • holly shit! what is with this vibrato?!?

  • To me, Sarah's first movement interpretation as well as her second movement is one of the best! The emotional journey that she takes us on is very captivating. She's up their with Heifetz, Neveu, and Ferras in my opinion!

  • sarah en el mar es una sirena, en un bosque el canto de los pajaros, en el fuego, el movimiento perpetuo enèrgico, en los planetas el aire, en el metal el oro que brilla y claro, en el cosmos un SOL que vivifica.

    gloria y honor SARAH CHANG

  • @iamachickenwing Most welcome! You (she) deserve(s) it.

  • Comment removed

  • @40junno No. She look fine. But she plays beautifully.

  • @40junno She plays hot?? LOL! XD

  • listening to mendelssohn and sibelius just encourages me to play violin even more ;)

  • @kcskcw Ironically enough, those are my two favorite concertos(:

  • @prettysingah LOL me too

  • this is my favorite piece :] and her's was the first recording i ever heard of it!!

also, both the clarinetists shown have the same hair :] lolercopter.

  • Amanzing!! ;D Sarah Chang 5*

  • Silence is here the only proper comment.

  • amazing! <3

She´s beyond!

  • Hey, I love Sarah Chang, too! What a gift to mankind!

  • I love sarah chang!

    i love her musicality!

and to the haters: keep your dumbness to yourselves

  • Bravo, Sarah! As I've maintained throughout, this performance is spectacular and I like no one better than you performing this concerto. It's really too bad so many people visit this page and pollute it with arguments.

  • I ♥ Sarah Chang

  • 6:15 to 6:36....amazing

  • its so weird.. the 3rd movement is god awful. but this is so moving. the orchestra sounds incredible and the section between 5:00-6:54.. moving

  • Comment removed

  • I think the problems are the orchestra and the conductor here, not Sarah Chang.

  • nice little viola solo there :D

she seems to have become much more tasteful. as if she has transitioned from showy child prodigy to mature artist. much respect for her.

  • Comment removed

  • well first, it's everyone's right to give you a thumbs down if they don't agree with you just like it's your right to state your opinion. also, you didn't provide evidence for your comment, you just said this performance was bad. this performance is astounding by any standards--she has such a malleable sound and so achieves so many different tone colors. one obvious sign of her maturity is her minimal movement, which brings attention to her music. Then, of course, there's her fierce musicality.

  • Comment removed

  • you're obviously dense & it's very immature to lash out when someone doesn't agree. since you didn't get what ppl tried to tell you i'll simplify: you asked why you got thumbs down and were told it's because you (the intelligent one) make comments no one agrees with and fail to provide coherent evidence. also, the young fiery sarah chang with "purer emotions" can't possibly compete with the "corrupted" sarah who's had more life experience and thus has greater depth of emotion. thus her maturity.

  • fyi it's you that needs to get over not having people agree with you. you're the lone who's being disrespectful and immature in case you can't see that. get a life dude you're probably an old man with no life who has nothing better to do than argue with kids who are smarter than you.

  • ok, dude -_-"..... i was inviting you to intelligent conversation. i gave examples for why i believed this recording is better. you didn't. i respectfully, but straightforwardly, told you why people disagree with you. but you immediately resort to name-calling. but anyway, let's forget all that and be intelligent adults. now if you please, provide some intelligent evidence to defend your position. no hard feelings.

  • johntwebbjr do you have any musical experience? the only way the 15 year old sarah could outshine this one is with her dramatic--and yes SHOWY--movements. i give you a thumbs down b/c you make accusations without proof... and what the hell does the little prince have to do with sarah chang? you're commenting on the wrong videos.

  • I don't know the date of this, but she seems to have changed her sound. Less "fruity", a slightly narrower vibrato and much less forced. I like it. Not that she was anything less than stella before but this is more mature, less show bizz and deeper. Fantastic bowing and articulation.

  • she's getting thinner hey?

  • ahh i'd have to say she is queen of the meditation from thais!!! :):)

  • 5:30ish!

my favorite moment in this movement :D

  • Who is the conductor? He looks like he is trying to cast a spell rather than lead an orchestra. If I had him for a conductor I would just want to punch him in the face for making me go crazy lol

  • conductors usually tend to look like they're casting spells....

  • None of the conductors I have do. Some aren't great but they're easier to follow.

  • He is Jaap van Sweiden, he now the conductor for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra in Dallas Tx,

  • wow i really like this thanks for posting(:

  • she is undiscribable

  • NONONO!!

    This is all wrong.

This is not a typical Sibelius Finnish music performance.

I have big problems to imagine the beautiful Finnish nature and landscapes.

Thats the whole idea behind music.

  • that's your opinion. i disagree

  • i agree with you. she does an ok job but it lacks a lot for me. I love Kyung Wha Chung's interpretation.

  • 4.45-5.00 reminds me of classic sibelius symphonic style!

  • lmao

  • Sarah Chang's play is more fun to watch than Hiliary Hahn's.

  • great playing! and her gown just is just FABULOUS!

  • She has a great sound but too caught up, too hard, too much tension.

    No ductility in the phrasing,.

  • Oh my goodness!! Sarah Chang is a legend in the violin. From my perspective, she is the best violinist so far. I love her so much!!

I am so speechless with her stage presence and her perfection, its really hard to play perfect. But Sarah Chang is just too Amazing....

By the way...she looks so gorgeous in her blue dress. It makes her look like a Fairy in a violin. Simply beautiful...

  • I think it's quite rare nowadays to have star soloist who actually "owns" their instrument (Strad or Guarneri).

For most others, their instruments are only on loan to them.

Sarah bought hers when she was a teenager.

  • and were she got her money from?

    Are her parens so rich?

  • Sarah said, relatives helped her buy the instrument, I think they all contributed money, until they have enough to buy the Guarneri

  • No! she's been concertizing since the age of 8! she was probably a millionaire by the age of 14!

  • Actually she makes anywhere between 50k to 80k a concert. Do you know how many concerts she has a year? Not to mention record sales and loyalties everytime someone plays a recording of her on the radio!

  • Comment removed

  • yes, the difference is that sarah chang is actualy talented. lol

  • LOL! Nice one. He/She obviously can't do His/Her math either.

  • @McSplat, and what is ur point...they make a lot more than the average person. i think everyone knows that pop musicians make more than her. who cares....bill gates and warren buffett makes more than all musicians combined

  • Comment removed

  • @ McSplat: you are an uncultured idiot.

  • Sarah sarah sarah sarah sarah sarah sarah sarah sarah sarah CHANG!!!

  • maxim vengerov s.u.c.k.s lol

Chang plays a verrrry underrated sibelius. If you can play this piece extremely well, then you know you have a great violinist. Chang is definitely one of the top 3 best violinists living today

  • 6:37 - 6:54 is amazing. Love how the solo violin part echos the low cello melody before.

  • YES! The climax. However, I like Hiliary Hahn's play for the 5:15 - 5:45 portion

  • I was just thinking that. At about 5 30, that one chord seems just a bit too high.

  • Sarah, you are the best ever. I like the Sibelius by you best of all - you cannot improve on perfection.

  • Her violin-playing is as beautiful as she is. I play the violin as a hobby, so I admire her for her great intonation, her great phrasing, tempo, and interpretation. I think she's one of the greatest violinists of modern times.

  • is that sarcasm?

  • Which comment are you referring to? I've written several comments in the past few weeks.

  • Haha. What an inaccurate statement, shaden94.

  • she is a beauty

  • Yeah, she looks so hot and sexy in that little turquoise-pink dress. :-)

  • You can see how she's matured..especially in her playing. There's a certain darkness to it. I think its great.

  • umm i can't stop staring at the slit that goes down allllll the way to her belly. :)

  • sarah chang is gorgeous.. and so is her playing :)

  • Just watched the whole thing...its...amazing...O_O I wish to become a violinist like her...but I dont know if that'll happen..T_T

  • Well, the violin requires so much patience and perseverance to master. If you really want to be good like Chang, you have to practice hard for several years.

  • at 4:30ish is she like whatever?????? lol

great playing, i enjoyed it very much. Her violin sounds so clean and smooth!

  • Sarah Chang is one beautiful, sexy violinist.

  • I love the way Chang's violin resonates...it has such a pure, clean, vibrant sound to it. Does anyone know what model her violin is? Thanks.

  • It's a Guarneri del Gesu from the 18th century. If you like the violin, you should get a del Gesu model.

  • I personally met Rachel Barton Pine about 6 months ago after one of her performances on our college campus, and she told me that her violin is also a Guarneri del Gesu. I think those sorts of 18th-century violins can be EXTREMELY expensive, up to $250,000. I don't even have ONE-TENTH of that money, so there's no way that I can possibly afford to buy such a high-quality violin like that. But thanks for letting me know :-)

Hopefully, I can become half the violinist Sarah Chang is one day!

  • It's actually a lot more expensive, about a million.

  • ONE MILLION USD??? OMG :-O :-O :-O

  • its a Guarneri Del Gesu of 1717...her parents brought for her during her teens...however one think i really doubt is that her del Gesu is the only one befor the 1720s....

  • I like Sarah Chang about 5X better than Hilary Hahn. Chang's playing is so much more emotive, and I think Chang's technique is better.

But my favorite violinist is Vanessa Mae. She is actually a classically-trained violinist, and I'm very impressed with her rendition of Max Bruch's Scottish Fantasy that she played with the London Philharmonic. The Scottish Fantasy is my favorite violin concerto, it is one of the most beautiful and hardest pieces ever composed for the violin and orchestra.

  • Vanessa Mae is a joke.

In the classical world at least.

  • I disagree, VM played Bruch's Scottish Fantasy with the LPO way back in 1996, which is one of the hardest violin concertos ever written. And she did record Vivaldi's Original 4 Seasons way back in 1998. At 13, she was one of the youngest violinists to have recorded the Tchaikovsky and Beethoven violin concertos.

Just look at her discography and you'll see that she's actually a classically-trained violinist.

  • That is true, however, I still feel that she's not a great violinist. She switched over to do her "pop" violin type of songs. And although those are great for what they are, she's not technically up to the level of great violinists like Heifetz, Perlman, or Hahn; and in this case, Sarah Chang. But that's just my opinion on Vanessa Mae.
