As JACO and so many famous artist, people- EMINGWAY, VAN GOGH, MOZART, LIZ TAYLOR, CHURCHILL, NAPOLEON BONAPARTE, MEL GIBSON, ROBIN WILLIAMS, MARILYN MONROE, EDGAR ALLAN POE, AUDREY HEPBURN, MARLON BRANDO, BEN STYLER, CHOPIN, MOLIERE, CARY GRANT, VOLTAIRE etc AND A LOT OF UNKNOWN PEOPLE OF ALL TIMES -of course - I also suffering of bipolars troubles since always
I really can understand so well what kind of nightmare was the end of his life even if bipolarity is different from 1 perso to another
I really think - even if Joe ZAWINUL and JACO PASTORIUS are gone away and missing forever...- that WEATHER REPORT was a band, a perfect fusion between very different kind of musicians from everywhere...
It is impossible to separate one musician of this band than the others, each one had his own importance at the time...
The sound' s result, the mixture was totaly unique, colorfull and totaly perfect !!!
The perfect image of diversity, multiplicity and humanity, colors, dreams and voyages...
I've been reading more about Jaco here and there online. Speechless seems to be a good example of what is written about Jaco's growling sound from roundwound Rotosound strings and his plucking near the bridge pickup. Wikipedia on Jaco under equipment/basses discusses Jaco's famous "Bass of Doom." Sadly, there is in the Wikipedia the story of Jaco's death resulting from a beating behind a beer joint in Florida.
@jazz4asahel i cannot to this day tell, speak of his death wi/out crying...what a horrible fckng thing, a great musician like that, how he die. it actually totally unbelievable to me. what someone will do. what people do to each other. sad sad sad. jaco. at least u are home now.
I had the privilege to see Jaco perform in 1986 so it was the same year or the year before he died. He was playing with 2 unknown Austrian musicians but it was FANTASTIC...Greatest Bass Player of all times imo.

No amount of argument, can reduce his contributions not only to the instrument, but the weaving of music, based upon the loss of conventional constraints, upon any musician, who chooses to take a new path!
This is brilliant, and genius in its form!
Seriously, thank you for placing this out here, I have it, but for others who may have not known, they are now infected with an awe inspiring dose of musical possibilities!
@Groonblatt You're right to compare Dream Clock and A Remark You Made as beautifully constructed. I'm looking for the title of a Weather Report song that has in it a synthesized female voice repeating the time of day, I think 3:03 as the musical journey takes the listener through time zones. Any ideas?
@MattieSongbird Pyschologists have been studying the undeniable connection between genius and mental suffering for some time now. It seems to be inherent in some hidden element in the genetic code that simultaneously releases both. More people need to learn that this unfortunate fact has nothing to do with the upbringing or life choices that these individuals make. This does nothing to lessen the tragedy. We can only be thankful that their suffering led to masterpieces.
@RatchetGUN I knew Jaco personally in his early years, and saw him again in 1979. It is so refreshing to hear him praised as a great human being, because he really, really was. The soul of this man was like the best of his music, and anyone who thinks they know him from the biography and other stories of his behavior have no clue of what he was really like. Jaco was keyed into the exuberance of the Creator of the Universe, and was filled with love. Thank you, from he and I.
