They didn't want another opera singer. In Metal Hammer magazine, Tuomas states that Tarja is one of the finest classically trained singers and to have picked someone who sings like that too would have always been second best. They didn't want another classical music styled voice, they wanted something different. Anette was hired because she sent in Ever Dream for her demo and it was different and that's what they wanted. I think Anette is amazing, end of story.

El material nuevo esta bien bueno, pero los clasicos mmmmmm es como paul roger en Queen. a esta mina le falta tono, no canta mal, pero no se la puede. es como que tarja trate de cantar los temas de Dead Can Dance, la vocalista de ese grupo si que tienen una voz tremenda.

It feels like a wedding band cover of a real song. Maybe it feels more like a nice-ish karaoke where everybody cheers because they're half-drunk. I like Anette, and the songs that were made with her strengths in mind are nice, but if you can't fill out a song with the spirit it was made for, there's no crime in hanging your hat on that one. Otherwise, it sounds as though half of what you're doing is alive, and the other, uninspired crap.
Actually, I think she does pretty well on this song. It has lost its original feeling, yes. But Anette does so much better on the high notes here than in songs like "Ever Dream", so it's seriously not that bad, I think.

Ok I read a lot of your postings. You really cannot compare Tarja and the songs she did with Nightwish with Anette. Anette can never hope to sing songs specifically written to use the vocal range of Tarja, which is why when she tries to sing the same songs, it sounds like crap. Anette only hope is for new songs that utilize her voice. It will never sound like the old nightwish and that we must accept. Thank goodness I have my old CDs. So even if Tuomas writes the songs, this is a different band.
Tarja's and Anette's ranges are actually quite similar. Anette does very well on the Once material, which wasn't operatic to start with. And for someone who is classically trained, Tarja is nothing special - neither vocally nor technically.
And for the record, I think that at the end of the day, Tuomas cares for his music above all. If Annette didn't "fit" or if she "ruined" his songs in HIS eyes (or ears for that matter), I'm pretty sure she'd have gotten the boot as Tarja did.

I think Tuomas is on a path to self destruction, and he's going to take the entire band with him. When Tarja married Marcelo I think something inside him snapped, and he lost his mind. That's what the cause of the friction was and what was motivating him to write amazing songs, as the poet inside him was screaming out his inner thoughts.

I don't know much about this band, and someone asked me to compare this bands singers. For a vocal pointof you, the old singer is lightyears above in vocal ability and the music suited her better than this new one. They have cool music though. And the band has the right to do what they want. This singer would be better off doing another genra.
This isn't a right song for her. All of the old Nightwish songs are nothing for her. The should not let her singing to the old songs and keep the marvelous memories of Tarja's singing to them in our heads.
to put it in a less...wordy way, I think its safe to say Anette needs work with the old material in order to make it her own. The band is still great, some fine tuning on Anette's part and they'll be back to their old selves, only minus a money grubbing diva.

In fact, she wanted to do a farewell tour after the next album was released, which the fans would have LOVED.
But Tuomas had other plans, and decided to fire her in the most hurtful way possible, then released his dirty laundry on her in public in an effort to demonize her, where many of the accusations he made are simply projections of his own faults onto her or outright distortions designed to paint her in the worst light possible.
He then hired a pop chick to sing songs written for a classical voice, stating that he didn't want another classical vocalist in the band. It certainly seems he did that in order to sell more albums in the US with a more mainstream sound that would appeal to a younger crowd.
Now who's the one that cares more about money than the fans and what they want?
I think people throw around the term "pop singer" too much. It seems ANYONE without a classical voice is labeled as pop these days. The moment Anette taps her foot and looks like she's enjoying the music she's performing, people cry "POP!" like it's a witch hunt. As for appealing to the younger crowd, IMO, that's utter BS. After having to write songs for a classical voice for almost 10 years, I'd think Tuomas would want to change vocal styles for the sake of evolving his music, not to sell more.
I think you place Tuomas on a pedastal and find him infallible just because he wrote some great songs. He's human just like anyone else, and is far from flawless.
Concerning Anette, she's certainly a pop chick who has no sense of how to sing metal. Hell, Avril Lavigne has more of a metal sound than Anette does, at least in some of her songs such as Losing Grip. Anette is just a poor singer, her voice is annoying, and she isn't good enough to be in a band like Nightwish.

Tarja did change her vocal style. Sleeping Sun was rerecorded in 2005 and sounds different from the 1999 version. Tuomas and Tarja said in an interview that the band is moving away from the "opera" style to a more cinematic style.

El material nuevo esta bien bueno, pero los clasicos mmmmmm es como paul roger en Queen. a esta mina le falta tono, no canta mal, pero no se la puede. es como que tarja trate de cantar los temas de Dead Can Dance, la vocalista de ese grupo si que tienen una voz tremenda.

It feels like a wedding band cover of a real song. Maybe it feels more like a nice-ish karaoke where everybody cheers because they're half-drunk. I like Anette, and the songs that were made with her strengths in mind are nice, but if you can't fill out a song with the spirit it was made for, there's no crime in hanging your hat on that one. Otherwise, it sounds as though half of what you're doing is alive, and the other, uninspired crap.

Actually, I think she does pretty well on this song. It has lost its original feeling, yes. But Anette does so much better on the high notes here than in songs like "Ever Dream", so it's seriously not that bad, I think.

Ok I read a lot of your postings. You really cannot compare Tarja and the songs she did with Nightwish with Anette. Anette can never hope to sing songs specifically written to use the vocal range of Tarja, which is why when she tries to sing the same songs, it sounds like crap. Anette only hope is for new songs that utilize her voice. It will never sound like the old nightwish and that we must accept. Thank goodness I have my old CDs. So even if Tuomas writes the songs, this is a different band.

Tarja's and Anette's ranges are actually quite similar. Anette does very well on the Once material, which wasn't operatic to start with. And for someone who is classically trained, Tarja is nothing special - neither vocally nor technically.

I think Tuomas is on a path to self destruction, and he's going to take the entire band with him. When Tarja married Marcelo I think something inside him snapped, and he lost his mind. That's what the cause of the friction was and what was motivating him to write amazing songs, as the poet inside him was screaming out his inner thoughts.

Anette ist eine wirklich gute Sängerin aber sie passt einfach nich zu der Band Nightwish. Wenn ich an Wenn ich an das "alte" Nightwish denke dann sehe ich immer Tarja mit ihrer Hammer Stimme und den rest der fantastischen Metal Band aber wenn ich jetzt an das "neue" Nightwish denke seh ich i-wie mehr eine Pop/Rock Band als eine Metal Band.Ich hab NICHTS gegen Anette an sich aber Tarja`s Stimme passt einfach besser zu Nightwish!! I don't know much about this band, and someone asked me to compare this bands singers. For a vocal pointof you, the old singer is lightyears above in vocal ability and the music suited her better than this new one. They have cool music though. And the band has the right to do what they want. This singer would be better off doing another genra.

I agree Anette definitely has some fine tuning to do, but she's NEW. How can you judge on first appearances. Most of dark passion play seemed to be experimentation with Anette's vocal range and strengths, An aging band with a new singer must revert back to its "new band" status when the singer has so much impact on the sound of the music.

In fact, she wanted to do a farewell tour after the next album was released, which the fans would have LOVED.
But Tuomas had other plans, and decided to fire her in the most hurtful way possible, then released his dirty laundry on her in public in an effort to demonize her, where many of the accusations he made are simply projections of his own faults onto her or outright distortions designed to paint her in the worst light possible.

I think people throw around the term "pop singer" too much. It seems ANYONE without a classical voice is labeled as pop these days. The moment Anette taps her foot and looks like she's enjoying the music she's performing, people cry "POP!" like it's a witch hunt. As for appealing to the younger crowd, IMO, that's utter BS. After having to write songs for a classical voice for almost 10 years, I'd think Tuomas would want to change vocal styles for the sake of evolving his music, not to sell more.

I think you place Tuomas on a pedastal and find him infallible just because he wrote some great songs. He's human just like anyone else, and is far from flawless.
Concerning Anette, she's certainly a pop chick who has no sense of how to sing metal. Hell, Avril Lavigne has more of a metal sound than Anette does, at least in some of her songs such as Losing Grip. Anette is just a poor singer, her voice is annoying, and she isn't good enough to be in a band like Nightwish.

That's an excuse, not a reason. Although Tuomas ACCUSED her of caring more about money than the fans, there is no objective fact that backs that up.

With barely noticable flat notes up to 0:34 or so, at 0:35 she hits a pretty obvious flat one. Then at 1:06 she's obviously flat.
And this isn't the complete song, she usually does worse at the end of a song than the beginning.

maybe it's just the recording quality, but she needs to annunciate. ...and work on her timing a little bit. Tarja did a better job of holding notes. Annete does a good job with the newer stuff, but when she sings Nightwish's old stuff she sounds like a soprano trying to sing alto, which, I'm sorry, doesn't work.

Tarja did change her vocal style. Sleeping Sun was rerecorded in 2005 and sounds different from the 1999 version. Tuomas and Tarja said in an interview that the band is moving away from the "opera" style to a more cinematic style.
