I went to see Ballyregan Bob and Mick the Miller yesterday. What's happened to them in the Natural History Museum in Tring is horrible. They're displayed above head high in a long case with a load of other dogs. There's almost nothing written about just how fantastic the two dogs were. They were just on a shelf like it was the Natural History Museum equivalent of leaving them on top of the wardrobe. It made me terribly sad.
I was just a kid watching John Craven's newsround and I remember a report that this
colossus amongst dogs (Bob) was retiring after winning a record amount of races. The name always stayed with me till this day.I always wondered what happened to Bob & how he saw out the rest of his life.I don't pretend to know anything about racing but I wonder if he's the greatest of all. After that I fell in love with dogs & bought my 1st last year, a lovely but crazy Beagle.
hi tracy, what was the most money your grandfather was ever offererd for him,and did your family have a bet on him when he ran his first race,i hope you dont mind me asking.also i remember seeing a tv program when your grandfather and grandmother were talking about scurlouge,i was hoping to see it on youtube but sadly no one has posted it
I like to think that the Champ thought that even he wasn't going to give Ballyregan a start and a beating so he packed it in to save his energies for another day!!!
an absolute legend scurlogue the like off which has never and will never be seen again , two of his greatest performances were at Romford against Keem Rocket could anybody put them on here or Ramsgate against Miss Lyndsay i think
scurlogue did chase the bloomin hare, it was part of his training at home. Yes he chased the dogs then the hare., correct nothing wrong with that. Horses are very similar!!!!! He was by no means a sprinter he was long distance yes, so whats wrong with that. He was a superb dog and not one of his races were turned down. My grandparents went against all the families wishes to think about each race card, but they never. Whatever was asked of that dog he tried his hardest. He NEVER gave up!!!!!
would rather see a dog come from 20 lengths down and pass every dog in the race to win than a dog who went clear early on and stayed cleared bob was great a true champion but for entertaintment scurlogue champ DUKE was on a different level thats my opinion anyway !
this race should never hav taken place , total mismatch , the owners of champ were payed fortunes to pit there dog against bob just to boost his reputation its as simple as that . u wouldnt see seb coe taking on michael johnson over 400 metres would u !! why ..cos he cant win . this was just a money spinner that went wrong and tarnished champs wonderful career , i was very lucky 2 see both dogs in there prime and they should be remembered 4 there other acheivments ..... not this stupid race !!!
pat peckham has a vets certificate stating duke was lame after this race against bob. duke has been in many races where he was sometimes 25 lengths down on the front dog, did he give up then NO WAY he had a heart of a lion and always wanted to win he knew where the line was. RIP DUKE YOU ARE STILL A LEGEND !
She probably has, however the other dogs in this race were so fast over four bends that scurlouge champ who was so far behind forgot what he was doing and chucked it. He was an 8 bend dog and could give other stayers a good start and beat them as long as he kept them in sight.
Scurlouge Champ was a clever dodger thats all, anyone like me who has trained greyhounds have seen them. Scurlouge never chased the hare and in this race was so far behind he forgot what he was there for, sure the racegoers loved him but old Bob was the real deal, a heart like a lion, staying power and knew what he was chasing. Sadly though wasn't so good at stud as he was at racing, pity about that
duke did go lame pat has a vets certificate stating he was lame. duke never saw the hare till the last 100 yards, in about 80% 0f his races. scurlogue champ chased the other runners then the hare which he usually saw off the last bend most of the time.
scurlogue champ didnt not go lame, greyhound racing is about chasing the hare but if you cant see it you cant chase it, a dog like ballyregan bob had too much 4 bend pace for a stayer like champ so it was always obvious who was gonna win over 6
when scurlogue champ was at the peak of his racing career there is not a greyhound alive today or in the history of the sport that he would not of picked off. once duke started his run his finishing pace was devastating over 8 bends he has to be the greatest greyhound ever to set foot on a racing track.
It's just great that we can argue about this forever thanks to those two magnificent greyhounds. It was an honour to see them both race. Whoever would win over six bends or eight does not really matter, the fact that these two gave such pleasure and are still remembered does.
scurlogue champ never gave up he had a heart of a lion he never ever wanted to get beat by any greyhound ken peckham along with his wife pat owned duke as they called him. pat has a vets certificate stating that duke went lame that night ballyregan bob would never ever have beaten scurlogue champ over 8 bends never.
thank you for your kind words. Yes duke was lame and very lame at that. We as a family treated that dog like a member of the family. It was a sad sad day when he died but all the videos on you tube has brought it all back. Thank you for that!
oh my goodness, we have been out of the dog business now for some years so I couldnt comment. 20 years on with all the technology and recovery aids etc I would of thought they would or should beat him. A bit like an sportsman these days. I hope dog racing is as exciting these days as it was for us, I travelled all over Great Britain with Scurlogue and met some very famous people, it was fantastic.
I know what you mean, it's a bit like footballers I guess. If you type in Big Daddy Cool Greyhound and watch the main vid u'll see that dog, it's australian, but looks as if it could be doped, even in this day and age. I'm british but it looks like those aussie doys are real speed demons, though it's maybe just the camera angles. Would love to know what you think! Cheers.
I'm in agreement. Bob would always win over 6, but the Champ would win over 8 for me. Scurlogue will always be the greater dog in my mind (and heart) due to his style of racing. there is something phenomenol about seeing a dog come from that far back.
No he never, he never gave up on any of his training nor any other race so why say that about this race. Because it was against bob. we never went there thinking he was going to win, it was too short. My grandfather was requested so he complied. Simple as that. he didnt want to turn it down and look a coward , ithink that was the thing. I was in race horses and its just the same.
i do not have rose tinted specs my friend read all my comments posted on the champs other races. ballyregan bob was unbeatable over 6 bends as i said on other videos but if they ever met over 8bends there would have been only 1 winner
Just to clarify my point, Bob would have been so far ahead after six bends, Scurlogue Champ would have forgotten what he was doing and chucked it, because he wasn't chasing the hare.
Bob was a very very good dog over his distance and yes they should not have raced together. Politics aside though why they raced is only my grandparents choice. Media, money non stop phone calls everyday asking why they would not meet Bob in a head to head.??????? He was our pet he was never treated as a famous dog that needed special treatments so I think they just thought WHAT THE HELL! He was a dog not the president! Bob was and still is an Icon and so too is the champ in our eyes.
Take off those rose-tinted specs my friend. Scurlogue Champ was a great dog but Ballyregan Bob was the best as his record proves. He broke nearly every track record, something that Champ couldn't match. Us greyhound fans were lucky to witness two great dogs running at the same time. Oh how greyhound racing needs stars like them again. Although good, Lenson Joker and Flying Winner aren't in the same league.
scurlogue won 51 of 63 races, all offered , not hand picked!!!!! before the opposition were selected most times, and also 20 track records and some still stand. 2 years and 1 month of racing career, not many do that.
scurlogue went lame going to the first bend there are people who say he stopped chasing because bob was so far in front thats totally untrue look at his video of march 29th 1985 does it look familiar did he stop chasing that night he was a superstar with the heart of a lion i saw him close up how different he looked to the other dogs he was a truly handsome greyhound and he knew it
