I was happy to find this. My grandmother and mother would often make ffods the way it had been done durring the depression. This was especially true if we ran low o something and couldn't get to the store. Stale toas was chopped up and sprinkled with shuggar then you would poor milk over the toast and eat fast so it tasted like cereal. If sick you would eat steamed crackers and a few shots of dandilion wine. one they always spoke about but never made was pretzel soup. Do you know how to?

Will Clara be coming out with another book soon? What about a WWII cookbook? Did she add any new recipes during this time? Did rationing have any impact on her and her family? I love her stories! My mom is 92 and grew up in Chicago and was a very finicky eater. Her family was Jewish and she really didn't care for her mothers food. So once her dad asked an Italian friend to give her some spaghetti hoping she would like that. She liked it but didn't eat too much. Keep the stories coming.

New fan but long time frugal nut. When sweet potatoes and regular potatoes are on sale, like they are now, buy extra and mash them then save then in dinner sized portions, great use for all those margarine containers you've probably got stuffed somewhere and it will save you time and money. Don't forget leftover mashed potatoes make great potato cakes. Good Luck to all you folks entering the contest.

Growing up I've heard so great stories that my great-grandfather really loved Christmas and would go all out for the kids and grand-kids, purchasing chocolates and fresh fruit (a rarity) they lived in the country so he would go out to the back of their property and cut down a pine tree. He really saw to it that it was a special time of year.

My Mom was a child of the depression. I loved her cinnamon cookies maded from left over pie pastry. She'd roll strips of pie pastry & spread butter on it. Then sprinkle sugar & cinnamon. Roll them up & cut them with a knife into flat cookies. I got them a lot in my school lunch when I was a kid.
