  • Ok Mr. Show-off, how are we supposed to figure out what those exercises are at that speed. Also why don't you change the sound of your guitar to something that sounds like music instead of something right out of the pit of hell.

  • @toppro777 lol you just proved to everyone that you blow assholes at guitar

  • @toppro777 Haha, you fool..

  • @toppro777

    Use your ears.

  • wow, first guy that I see play like that using the whole arm technique... as opposed to wrist.... cool

  • help! how do you call the lydian scale with a b7?

  • @slashy04 always remember that lydian is a mode of the major scale....for ex: if you play in g major, the lydian mode is C lydian....and if you want to flat a 7 note, than it would be a diminished 7, if you raise it, it's an augmented 7th

  • @instrumentalist28 i know that but whats it called? :L

  • @instrumentalist28 and would it would become lydian dominant right? (if you also flat the 7).

  • @bskkid4eva yess.....good point

  • @slashy04 LYDIAN DOMINANT

  • You were watching those 'how to advertise yourself' vids huh?

  • funny, it seems like he conpletely ignores his wrist for lead playing. (?)

  • Epic O,O

  • now i can be a magic elf too!

i'm still listening to Heavy Meddle album

  • I commented on one of your other vids...you're a great player, very clean and tasteful. I'm trying to find a song from a project I was in around 2 years ago, entitled "Audigy." The song would be very appropriate, as I aptly called it "Lydiana" lol. It's more of a "stepping stone" to understanding the Diatonic Lydian Mode, in the context of a progressive rhythmic approach, as opposed to an all out assault of it, as you've put fourth }=)...Much respect, Carl. Vid Response coming soon.

  • LOL what shit

  • This is really great. Thanks!

  • looks like a suhr guitar. bloody expensive!

  • @THEGSPOT0394 well, botique guitars made to your specifications are usually quite expensive

  • I like how he picks with his entire arm.

  • beautiful lead

  • but the tabs arent working?

  • wow thanks so much for this exercices

  • Sounds like Vai

  • Finally something worth watching from GuitarWorld!!!!

  • Why are people that play Suhr guitars all amazing?

  • Lol this guy looks alot like my dad

  • @YodaVanHalen Actually Ed is more of a dorian guy, but I see what you mean.

  • By the way, is Carl left-handed (like in writing, etc.?) I wonder 'cause his picking style is very different and, being a lefty, I notice that my own picking technique looks different than most righties.

  • @frimpit i dont know if thats why he picks so weird...im also left handed but play righty and my whole arm doesnt move that much, but then again i cant play that fast so maybe at that speed my arm would move as much too

  • I just bought his instructional dvd. He's a great teacher and very straightforward. He takes the bullshit out of it and makes it understandable.

  • Never seen a guy speed pick like that - but it works!

  • Satriani also uses the Lydian Dominant scale as well. same scale, but with the flat 7

    it sounds even more sinister

  • @rwmcjazz a lydian with a flat 7 just makes a normal major

  • @dashfront21 Lydian Dom. has the #11 and a b7. which is not at all like a major scale.

  • @rwmcjazz i counted the 1st note of the lydian as the 4th of the major scale. so when i made the 7 flat (lowering the 4th note of the lydian, or the 7th note of the major is what i thought u meant), it lowers the sharp 4th back to a perfect 4th. this makes the lydian have the same whole and half step patterns as a major scale. i guess i misunderstood which note u meant. idk lol

  • sounds like carl roa.

  • nice lesson, don't agree with technique though

  • I need some tabs for the 1st section of this. Any body with tabs to this please inform/share

  • @Atomicsonic1 Hey, I have the TABS for all the Elf Riffs lessons on my website. The link is under the Guitar World logo on my home page. Thanks for the interest!

  • hey do you want jam I play drumms

  • @YodaVanHalen your name kicks major ass

  • that string skipping lick in a minor mode would sound sweet for a Prog metal riff.

  • sir i like ur style and sound. hope i cud play like u...im encouraged to study lead guitar

  • Yeah!!! Jeff Hanneman picking style! \m/

  • whats up with the elbow!!! use your wrist buddy might now know your scales put your right arm tech look like poop other than that nice

  • @mituntuz It's only bad if it SOUNDS bad!

Who gives a shit what it LOOKS like?!?

BTW, go look at Michael Angelo Batio's picking-technique...He's awesome, but he's NOT a "strictly-wrist-picker" (He bows his wrist and moves his forearm a lot!)

On the flip-side, Paul Gilbert IS ALL WRIST, and he's awesome too!

It's all about repeatability and how economically the "tip-of-the-pick" moves - NOT what each player's actual "body-mechanics" look like!

    Well, that's just my opinion.

  • @billmeedog Right on billmeedog! Well said. I actually spoke to MAB about picking technique ... and he agreed there is no one right way to do it. Each to his own. If it sounds good, it IS good! Thanks,

    Carl Roa

  • Great tone and playing, but bad picking technique. His slow picking is different from his fast picking technique. When he picks fast, it looks like he's spazzing his arm, but it still sounds fine for some reason.

  • @rofflesmini,

It's only bad if it SOUNDS bad!

Who gives a shit what it LOOKS like?!?

  • @billmeedog Give MAB a break, he is left handed!

  • @shredfix1993,

Dude, I said he was AWESOME?!? Go read my comment again?!?

All I was trying to point out is that NOT everyone's picking-technique needs to look like Paul Gilbert's or Guthrie Govan's (both amazing BTW!) to be great players. This whole "cookie-cutter-one-way-fits-all" mentality as it pertains to technique is a crock-of-shit!

IT IS GOOD IF IT SOUNDS GOOD!

I never ragged on MAB! He is obviously AMAZING bro!

    Peace!

  • Love the tone

  • @ESP4thaWin you surely could not master a lydian scale better than this guy.

  • @2:19

  • i love the guy and think he's incredible...but he raises his eyebrows too much lol

    rock on CR

  • This guy has all the best influences! I can sense John Petrucci, Rush, Steve Vai!

  • thanks for the lesson!

  • he has a bad hobbit picking :D..

  • For anyone who thinks his picking is "incorrect", why don't you check out Vinnie Moore and Steve Morse and then comment!

  • Its not the standard technique - but some people can do pretty well with"bad" technique. Pat Metheny is the same - he looks like he shouldnt be able to pick at all, but when he gets going...

  • and also Marty Friedman

  • I call this the "Simpsons mode" lol

  • I agree...you can superimpose the Simpsons theme over a Em progression say Em - CM - DM

  • wat is on his head? a mic??

  • no, that is an orangutan

  • @RevisedTV nope. its just a normal head stock..

  • man im gonna have to agree w/ travus but it works for him so i guess theres notin wrong with it, but he seriously doesnt move his wrist at all he picks all elbow style

  • sounds like dream theater, this is cool

  • his sound kinda looks like marco sfogili maybe he use same amp

  • suhr tones always amazing

  • Comment removed

  • obviously it sounds like steve vai cuz its in the lydian mode

  • sounds a bit like eric johnson

  • I was thinking Steve Vai...

  • @TimIsAwsome12 Thats rigth...

  • a little, i hear some EJ influences in there, but it's more like steve vai

  • agreed

  • Not to mention his picking is awful, his wrist is completely stiff and he's using his elbow...

  • I wish my picking was that "awful"! LOL. Ditto for the tone! LOL

  • sounds like joe satriani

  • Not even.

  • Haha omfg the sweeps are insane, I'm so teaching myself these :P

This is an awesome vid, 5*

  • The audio kicks ass in this video

  • yes suhr, it is

  • Awesome chops, great sound!

    Excellent lesson!

  • What kind of guitar is that?

  • sounds like vai....

  • yup

kinda like vai/petrucci stuff, but more like vai than petrucci

  • I think I heard some Paul Gilbert.

  • How could you possibly hear anything? You're obviously deaf.

  • elf as in the elves?

  • no.. elf as in humans.. YES elf as in elves dumbshit

  • i was reffering to the band....

  • Lol when I saw the title "Elf Riffs" I thought it was like christmas themed guitar playing haha.

But jeeze what a great player.

  • me too lol

  • this is awesome!!!!!!

  • Eric Johnson and Steve Vai also

  • Killer!!! Thanks for the awesome lesson, Guitar World! Keep `em coming!!! Love this guy's sound and playing! Very inspiring.

  • Long live Magic Elf !!!

  • ddoes someone have a link to the tabs for this, im too lazy to keep watching

  • He has awesome tone.

  • sounds like vai's giant balls of gold. same key. E lydian. Vai uses lydian a lot.

  • he uses his complete forearm to pick. I always thought that's the wrong way...

  • Yeh it is. It's more economical to pick with your wrist. Using your whole forearm creates a lot of tension in the arm and can cause problems like tendonitis. Watch the shredders like Paul Gilbert and Steve Vai and they pick from the wrist. I'm not putting down Carl Roa though. I've never heard of his band, but he seems to be a good player and a nice guy. So if he wants to play that way, let him do so.

  • funny, when he plays it slow he uses his wrist only :)

  • there is no right and wrong in music. sooner you understand it, better it will be for you.

  • Awesome! Thanks for posting this here. Love Carl Roa's playing and music.

  • eww too much forearm...

  • Sooooo not scripted.

  • Clean tone during slow demonstrations please.

  • YO GUITARWORLD... maybe with your friends in the guitar making companies. You can help me place an order for a 22.5"scale length guitar with my custom specs...

  • 2nd
