love the homemade shoulder rig im gonna try build one after seeing yours.ive found the only way to control exposure on my kit lens is by using exposure compensation , the onboard mic on the d3100 is ok until the lens starts auto focusing, .i find manual focus tricky with a moving subject. .. guess it takes practice!! thanks for posting this helpful video
how did you use the external Mic? There's no external Mic plug in... Unless you edited the video and put the audio recording on it =/ which means more pain in the ass
I like your 're-invention'... My issue, how to do the shoulder rigging.!?!?
I work with leather (saddles, reigns, harnesses, etc for horses), so I could put something together, but I just don't know what will work in terms of 'steadying'...!!! Any thoughts? Photos of your rigging would be so very much apreciated, it just looks like you found a system that really works!
@icuseattle It worked well in terms of stabilization, but it turned out to be impractical by the time I loaded up with 15mm rails, a follow focus, 7" monitor, microphone and H4n audio recorder, ring light and battery pack. I mostly now set up my rig as a handheld unit, similar to the Captain Stubling rig by Redrock Micro, which allows access to the follow focus. It's not nearly as stable of course but it's far more practical. There are some photos of this handlebar rig on mhoyledesign com.
@ChronicIllusionsTV It's some old Sennheiser, I used to use it plugged into the H4n recorder but due to gain issues it turned out better to just use the onboard mic. If one day I get a professional boom mic preamp I can use the Sennheiser shotgun but for now it's not useful. Nowadays you can get an inexpensive shotgun for DSLR filmmaking with enough gain for these digital recorders.
@ElliahAlsi OMG! i was think the same! i didn't want to comment. so i just checked if some other people though the same. so i didn't feel rude. ;D O.o
It would all be great if current settings on the screen were the actual ones. That way, 'one with the patience' could be able to cheat the camera to work in certain regime. But, Nikon doesn't want us to know what settings camera has chosen for video recording, and thus the One can't know in what direction to force it.
@blickblocks lol i was going to buy one but after seeing how much they were i just made one out of 2 polarizing filters btw i have a nikon 3100 lmao do u know if u can put custom picture styles like on a canon
@freakurGma Picture styles, you mean like color, sharpness, and contrast? Yes. I enjoy "Vivid", it is reminiscent of Fuji Velvia. I usually turn up the sharpness a bit as well. I tried the polarizer mod but I felt like it would be better just to wait till I get a matte box and use a cheap 4x4 ND.
@blickblocks well u see for a better cine style a flat and dulled image is better to color grade and with the picture styles on a canon can make pre ones that make better flim
It's an old Sennheiser. It's actually a really nice piece of equipment, it's just not engineered to match today's digital audio recorders. I bought an H4n to record with it but found it much too quiet. Now I just use the onboard mics from the recorder.
@DaWn0FTheDead In the new music video for Get the Shoes to Match the Cat I will be using this lens. I'm waiting on my rail setup to come so I can finish the new version of the shoulder rig because I have to redo some shots that were too shaky.
I love your DoF, I'd hate for you to ever have to comprimise that beautiful bokeh for to sake of lighing compensation! still, its inspiring for me to consider getting back into DSLR photography as it's so beautiful with nice glass for moving images- Zone system FTW! xXx
I think your prettier as a woman then a man.

2 questions...what is the lens that u are using in this video?
and how are u recording the audio? did you plug it into the camera or are u recording with an external unit?
KevalProduction 7 months ago
Does camera afore shooting video show SS/aperture/ISO settings it has chosen?
So that you can know values to what you have locked it ?
cronnin 8 months ago
@cronnin Nope, users are totally in the dark as to what settings the camera is on. :(

couldn't you do this without locking exposure?? seems to me that you changed the exposure without locking it, but then again i could be wrong

Pretty Neat! Never thought someone would hook a camera on a bike handle bar!
That's very clever of you! Mina :)
The handlebar is definitley the best way to stablize your camera for sure! I might just
give that a try! Thanks! For posting a another great video! I hope you have a great weekend!
