Hey guys! I've uploaded a video where I show the trick that lets you hold aloft your head instead of the trophy. Swing by my channel to check it out! =D
this game was way too easy, i challeneged the first just at the beginning, wont the first 2 races easily and got the best car >_> but i remember that bitch bot that challenges you after the first season and you just cant get him in the first race, kinda fucked up ;D
I used to play this game a lot when I was around 7 years old, and still now I think it's one of the most entertaining racing games I have ever played.
You know when a piece of music triggers a huge memory of something that you have. Well the main theme music of this game triggers pretty much every childhood memory I have between the ages of 4 and 10. What a classic!!
I know what you mean about how these games were when you were a kid. When I was little and I beat a game the feeling was indescribable. Sometimes it is really disappointing to go back to these games now and not feel that same way.
I played the crap outta this game in the arcade. It was basically the Monaco track with a steering wheel and paddle shifters! Graphics and gameplay were amazing for early '90s.
My freinds donated me a bunch of Genesis games. Including Michael Jackson's moonwalker with case, Jungle book with the case as well, Contra: Hard Corps, etc. they also gave me the case of Super monaco GP, but no game :(
This is my all time favourite racing game, played this and Super Monaco GP 2 for years when I was a kid. I love the music on it and the fact that it actually had realism that most racing games at the time didn't have. Like the slipstream you could get behind a car at speed and also how the road had elevation, it was advanced for it's time!
I too grew up playing the hell out of this game. If you beat it, and carry on playing you are challenged by an unbeatable (literally) Firenze driver and demoted.
I used to be very bad playing this when I was 7 and crashing all the time. But 16 years later, I finally conquered it (except beating G. Ceara aka Ayrton Senna which is hard and he's the only reason I came back playing this game.)
i love this game! is my all time favourite im hooked on mega drive collection on xbox 360, must get on ebay and get a mega drive and this game! also, brilliant review!
lol! the engine of the car is the "Sega SG1000" , the name of their first home console in Japan. It came out around the time of the Intellivision / Colecovision and was similar. There's even a European console called the Dina 2-in-1 that is a Colecovision and SG-1000 mixed together. Awesome reference!
"What they are really saying is you're so bad we're f*cked anyways. Our original driver OD'd on Cocaine at a nightclub." -- Best line of the video. laughed so much
This was My first race car game, I could Not stand the accelerator & brakes being on the hand controller while trying to shift gears while taking corners so I built a foot control peddle which was good for other games too & always used the 7 speed I could win at every track even with Zeroforce & I remember the record breaking speeds trying to beat Ceara even over lapping the other cars & even though I beat him at later tracks they would Never give Me back the Madonna & yes I would-----
@ortafunk ----- hit the Idiot standing In the middle of the track but Not fast just enough to teach him a lesson Not to stand In the middle of the track with race cars flying past at over 200 mph.
I should never have sold Mega Games 3. But I dealt with that today, by buying it back, and Super Maonaco GP 2, which I have never played before. Love that you can actually save your game with 6 slots on SMGP2! No more massive passwords!
@Lorric101 I always remember SMGP2 being MUCH harder than SMGP1, I have Mega Games 3 boxed away somewhere in my loft, the one with Alien Storm and Super Thunderblade? lol, I just downloaded an emulator so I can play these games on my PC with my PC pad, it's just not the same though :( I can feel a hunt coming on for the old megadrive 2!
@alanb783 Oh, have a look on youtube for the footage of the arcade version of Alien Storm if you've never seen it. It's quite different. It's worth it just to see the "Alien Busters" logo.
I loved this game and the "Competition" song. I have it in my Genesis collection. Took me several weeks to finish the game, I remember a new driver called "Ceara", that son of a bitch that take you out from Maddonna team. Then I realized that Ceara was Senna in he game. Anyway, great game, so many memories.
Everybody sucks when they play games they used to remember. Pac-Man, Super Mario Brothers, Sonic the Hedgehog 2... etc. I used to spend hours playing these games, and was good at them back then. When I play them now, it's "How come I suck?"
@FascistFrenchman I'm still good at revenge of shinobi, that game was so hard it just burned into my brain and never left. I do suck at super monaco gp though and I used to be the shit when I was 7
one of the all time great games.i remember the cheat after you won the monaco gp in the wet (2nd race), there was a way you could lift a head instead of the trophy on the podium!
yeah I had a video of that on my old youtube account, unfortunately the assholes over at YT deleted my account for "child violence" for killing a kid in Fallout 3... fuck' em...
yeah man, fuck these assholes at youtube... Bryan Wilks was the boy I brutalized... bashed the fucker's head in with the tenderizer then set his body parts on fire
i remember when i was like ... 5 - 9 years old , playing this game with my dad... took a few tries to beat g. ceara , damn , good times ... good times... dunno why my dad always liked the blanche car , it always broke on the last lap , i liked tyrant better...
I bought Super Monaco GP for a good $1 from a used gaming store about 4 months ago and have hardly played it at all.
Now that I see the Mark reviewing this game with such promising words towards it, I think I'll whip it out again, especially since my Sega Genesis is hooked up right now, especially since I bought a Sega 6-button Arcade stick two days ago!
I think sega should remake monaco gp, but i mean a real effort not any half arsed money making sceam, i liked how you could interact with the other drivers and there was to a decree a minor story line if you look into it, when you win the championship, the next season no matter how fast you drive that son of a bicth beats you, its like rocky or something becouse you just want to beat him after that and regain your crown. kick ass 360 remake please....
Wow, was it really 20 years ago?! I watched your whole review, good work. Remember that desperate feeling of having your rival approaching in your rear view and aiming to simply take them out - think that was key to completing this game - ramming your opponent! Brilliant, now to seek out some more of your reviews...
@Roskopeeko If you ram your rival, you get a message at the end of race "we don't want to be our rival anymore" (or something to that effect), does that race still count towards beating your rival though...
This game rocked - i played this millions of times back in the day but never got over the way you got screwed out of the car you won the first season in - it was IMPOSSIBLE to beat your rival in the 1st 2 races of season 2 and it made me bitter! :)
great review this is my all time favourite game growing up with this, the music the speed the quality simply brill but then all megadrive games were great, im still playing this now
Yes, this was my favorite too. I played this all the time. Couldn't you run over the guy at the end? I remember him flying off the screen while waving the flag.. lol.
I owned at this game when I was 9 years old. This is actually the only racing game which I can play with manual transmission. It's sad. But Super Monaco GP is a lot easier with manual than auto transmission.
I had this and Monaco 2. I used to be so good at this I could get to the Firenze team in 3 races. Rival them at San Marino, I couldnt beat them at Brazil the long straight they would pull too far away, and then beat them at France.
I preferred this game over the technically superior 'Geoff Crammond's Grand Prix' for PC, Atari and Amiga.
This game is so realistic though, it doesn't let you just pick the best team and dominate, as EVERY other F1 game before and since does. What's the fun in picking the best team? Wheres the challenge in that?
Fantastic game. In driving games I usually avoid manual transmission but this was the only driving game where I made the effort to master the 7 gear transmission. This game rewards effort. Its also one of the first driving games where you could slipstream.
The background graphics especially are beautiful; that scenery is beautifully drawn and amazingly detailed. Very atmospheric (the wind sounds really added to it IMHO).
I'm absolutely serioud when I say this... This is probably my favourite racing game ever. I played this game nearly every day when I was a kid between the ages of 5 and 9. I haven't played it since 1997 :( But there is a new Sega Mega Drive console being made by a company called Blade and it is being released over here in the UK on April 24th :) It's got 15 games built into it and you can play ANY cartridge port in it too, Japanese, European, American... So I am going to buy Super Monaco GP :D
lol amazing game, i loved it. all the tracks are based on real tracks and so are the teams and drivers. for example, the Blanche team is meant to be Brabham and their frent driver J.Herbin is meant to be Jean Alesi
The best part of this game comes when you've won the championship for the first time and are pit against Ceara (Senna) who joins Bullets (Arrows) and for two races is very tough to beat. If you can beat both of those in one sitting, you've mastered the game and get stay on team Madonna (McLaren).
I remenber looking at this game and think "wow!! what graphics! I what to play this one". (I had the master system game back then). It´s funny how time marches on:)
anytime i listen to "Gypsy Woman" by Crystal Waters, the melody of it reminds me of this game for some reason, This game along with Out Run(Sega) and Victory Run-(NEC's Turbo Grafx-16) got me hooked on racing games to this day.
Hey guys! I've uploaded a video where I show the trick that lets you hold aloft your head instead of the trophy. Swing by my channel to check it out! =D

I remember digging My Genesis out of the closet back in 1998 after being involved in a Motorcycle accident and being temporarily disabled.
I played Super Monaco GP one handed propped up on My elbow with the controller laying next to Me on the bed.
I got so good I could win the Championship driving for Team Zeroforce, yes I would challenge and beat Team Zeroforce to take over the ride.
To take over a ride You just beat a rival in two consecutive races and the car is Yours.

haha.. i know what you are talking about, when mentioning the Brazil course :O) lol how the years pass so quickly

One more thing. Who here would tilt their Genesis/Mega Drive controller in the belief it helped them to turn corners?! XD

Guilty as charged ^_^

I do like the fact that the engine in the car you have at the start of the game has 'SEGA SG1000' in. Google it if you don't know what I mean.

They all ARE actual race tracks or in some cases (including U.S.A.) street courses. Most of the tracks are still active on the F1 circuit.

The Genesis/megadrive voice synthesis is really, really bad. What kind of sound chip is this??? It sounds like something from a 1979 Atari.
Well maybe not that bad, but it's not Amiga Paula chip.

I still have this game for the Genesis and I play it every now and then. Really fun.

awesome game, even to this day. hope they'll do a remake on 360 or ps3 and keep the identity and feel of the game intact.

So I am going to buy Super Monaco GP :D

lol "youre so bad were fucked anyway"!!!
lol amazing game, i loved it. all the tracks are based on real tracks and so are the teams and drivers. for example, the Blanche team is meant to be Brabham and their frent driver J.Herbin is meant to be Jean Alesi

This game came bundled with my Mega drive system for which I saved money soo hard. It was really a great game.
The next game I got was Quackshot in summer of 92 for my 11th birthday a few months later..
This video has been a true nostalgia trip to others too according to commenting. :)

The best part of this game comes when you've won the championship for the first time and are pit against Ceara (Senna) who joins Bullets (Arrows) and for two races is very tough to beat. If you can beat both of those in one sitting, you've mastered the game and get stay on team Madonna (McLaren).
Retro classic.

anytime i listen to "Gypsy Woman" by Crystal Waters, the melody of it reminds me of this game for some reason, This game along with Out Run(Sega) and Victory Run-(NEC's Turbo Grafx-16) got me hooked on racing games to this day.

I got that game along with the console and "Zoom" in 1992 :) Those were the days.
