You may wish to try to use your thumb on the low string. Its very simple and I believe thats how John does it.

modified? lol it's not modified at all, they're just a different VOICING of the chords... also, tune your guitar, it sounds flat. One more thing too, put your SG down - you need a single coil and it looks like you've a choice of two behind you ;)
