  • “I feel I am completely cured” says Ms. Gianopoulos, “my symptoms have disappeared and I have a recovery of many functions, notably my balance and my muscle strength is all coming (back). Even after six months, I feel like there are good changes happening almost every day. Before, my biggest fear was that the changes wouldn’t (hold). I don’t even worry about having a relapse anymore”. • @madrazel What a ridiculous comment! Do some friggin research before you sprout off stupid statements like 'god hates stem cells'! Your skin uses YOUR OWN stem cells to repair and heal a wound - this is nothing different - using YOUR OWN stem cells from YOUR OWN body to repair damaged or diseased tissue. Grow a brain. Religious morons like you don't deserve help!!!!!!!!

  • @madrazel Shut up, religious nut-job

  • This looks some what painful, but hey if it makes your eyesight improve I'm up for SOME slight dis comfort.

  • God is agasinst humanity. He doesnt need a reasy. God is against the bums of little kids, god is against peace, god is against women...the list goes on and on.If it is good for humanity then god is angry ahahaha thanks god

  • Does this work for Keratoconus?

  • Excellent news having a non evasive procedure to repair epithelium and cornea. Bad news is finding a hospital or eye center in the States willing to do this simple repair, I have been searching and find most are doing outdated procedures using allographs and autographs, or nothing at all. They would rather treat the illness then fix it.

  • Is there any way this research could lead to more than correcting damage caused by disease? I'm talking about nearsightedness and farsightedness. Hell, if they ever made it to that point, I'd offer myself as a test subject.

  • Was there a study done that I could find in a scholarly journal?

  • Please somebody tells me how can I contact Dr Nick Di Girolamo from University of New South Wales (UNSW) medical researchers....please give me his email address...

  • Dr Di Giralamo suggests anyone interested in this technique should contact their opthamologist for a referral.

  • is this banned?

  • Not at all. These are adult stem cells from the patient's own body.

  • He is the fucking MAN

    GOD BLESS

    Nick!!!!

  • does anyone know if this can help eye refractive disorders? or if incision is required like laser eye surgery? i volunteer myself to any experiments with this technology on curing refractive disorder, my glasses/ contacts are -2.25. thanks.

  • It doesn't involve incision. Dr Nick suggests that anyone interested should make an appointment to see their ophthamologist and show them this video.

  • Hot damn, I attend UNSW and I'd personally like to go up and shake the researchers who developed this solution because it's god damn amazing. Just have to find them first.

    Brilliant.

  • Wait, you want to -shake- them? o_O

Or you want to shake their hands?

  • The second one :P

  • You make no sense.

  • Em, what?

  • what colour crayon did you use to compose that nuanced response?

  • what about people with myopia or astigmatisms? does this require any slicing of the eye like in laser eye surgery? interesting.

  • My friend just forward this to me, saying I had to see this. I'm crying now out of joy since I am considered legally blind in one eye. At this rate, hopefully I'd be able to see in 10 years!

  • Technology is simply put ...applied knowledge! It is neither good nor bad. It is just a tool.

Fire is a good example of technology. You can use it to warm your home or set your neighbor on fire. Nuclear is just a more powerful tool and Nanotech, Biotech and Robotics will result in very powerful applied knowledge. The solution is never ignorance or ludditism. However all human freedoms and liberties require a degree of responsibilities in a free civil society.

  • Anything for the advancement of science and the human race.

Maybe after we evolve a bit we will stop believing in foolish things such as god and stop thinking so radically eh?

  • I'm just glad we have made a major break through with stem cell i like to see results and I'm all for anything that gives people hope.

  • Then technology exists, but is slow to hit the mainstream. I say get the $ hungry out of the healthcare system.

  • Nooo! STEM CELLS! I am melting! mmmaaahaaahaaa

  • This is great, lets hope this kind of technology stays in good hands.

  • Yes, it would be terrible if all those bad people could cure blindness...

  • I didn't say I was against stem cell research or curing blindness. I distrust humanity and what they are capable of doing when they are greedy. But no, go ahead and assume. :)

  • What power could possibly be worse than nukes and chemical warfare as ir exists today?

The advantages of stem cell research are plenty, but one would have to think quite a bit to think of a disadvantage.

  • I think unchecked power of any kind is worse. Stem cell research for curing diseases and helping people is all great and dandy, but there will be that one scientist who'll want to take it another step and then another, and where will that lead? Nuclear power was made with the best of intentions and look where that got us.

  • But WHERE do you think it could lead?! Nuclear was made with the best of intentions???? No, it was made to engage in warfare(the fact that it help stop a war doesn't detract from that); also, it caused another "war" called cold war, provoked by escalation of nuclear power.

  • If I could predict the future, I'd tell ya, but sadly I don't have the capabilities. Yes they were made to engage in warfare, but people didn't know that it would cause cancer and all that stuff after. Its not like they wanted to maim another society on purpose, simply take care of business.

And if you go back to what I wrote and actually READ it, I said that I would hate if anything happen to mine, but things HAVE TO HAPPEN. I didn't say everyone else but mine can die.

  • What is it that you're trying to prove? I basically have said that I don't trust people with unchecked power. Do you disagree or not?

  • I just don't see any danger in Stem Cell research and find your lack of faith in the science community to be nonsensical.

Government and military need to be watched at all times, but the scientific community builds on sharing information and knowledge and as such, it is far from dangerous.

  • The people who you feel need to be watched, governments and the military turn to science. Where do you think nuclear weapons came from? They don't just fall out of the sky. :P

  • but it isn't the science community that will misuse knowledge. You see, you can't and you should never stop progress. What you must do is control the use of knowledge when it becomes malignant. Science provides the knowledge, the military and government are prone to misusing it, so they are the ones that need to be controlled.

  • I never said that progress should be stopped. Also, the government and military are in with the scientists, but they also have power to do what they want with the knowledge.

Either way, we're just going in circles. To address the initial problem: I distrust unchecked power, science can be used as a weapon, so I am a little hesitant towards new technologies. I never said I am against stem cell research. No worries.

  • Not to mention, I think disease and the like exists for a reason, population control. Its not pretty to say, but we are facing overpopulation. I'd hate if me or mine were sick, but some things have to happen.

  • So, as long as it doesn't affect you, there shouldn't be a cure. Got it! Quite a humanist, you are.

  • well done on this tremendous breakthrough

  • Sweet!

  • Awesome.

  • This can remove all scars on the skin too.

  • Could this repair the retina? (maybe a stupid question)

  • Adult stem cells... at work. This conservative approves.

  • but but god punished the people that are blind for such reasons many dont even know. how can we betray god like this.. shirly is right america is doomed!.. LMFAO not really shes crazy i like this hope the blind people can see :)

  • retard

  • Wow, this is AMAZING! I'm so glad blind ppl can be given a chance to see again.

  • we didnt do this before, oh wow thx george

  • I'm as much in favor of all stem cell research as anyone including embryonic stem cell work but this was all done with adult stem cells. That is why the European Union, Japan, South Korea and other sources of wealth and power which have pursued completely open ESC research have not done this before either.

  • Absolutely fantastic, good work.

  • damn, that seems almost too good to be true, I'd not expect it to be so easy.

Doesn't sound like it works for glaucoma though.

  • This is AWESOME! Blindness will be getting a cure within the next decade at most!

  • Well done guys!!

  • Just pray. It works better. Just kidding. Prayer sucks! :)

  • wow! That's amazing. I hope this can be extended to help many people.

  • I wonder if this helps for people who have "healthy" corneas but suffer daily from lasik complications, like me!

  • It should. if it can repair the cornea, it should repair your problem.

  • someone know if this video is already traslated to spanish???

  • *thumbs up*

  • brilliant..................................

  • This is very exciting. Good luck with the research.

  • PS: Good luck. Hope it brings better health. - unswtv.

  • We have spoken to our researcher Dr Nick Di Girolamo and he recommends that you ask your ophthamologist to refer to the study paper in the May 27 issue of the medical journal Transplantation to see if this treatment is suitable for your condition.

  • Thank you so much. Looking forward to investigating this further.

  • I have just been diagnosed with Keratoconus and scheduled for Collegen x-linking in August here in Melbourne. Just wondering if this could be an alternative. Please let me know.

  • 2:01 "the skin behaves in a very similar manner to the cornea"

    Stretchmark treatment ftw?

  • This is very interesting! I have astigmatism, would this procedure work on that too? Since my vision is constantly worsening, I'm worried I could possibly go blind someday. I wonder if they're going to adopt the procedure in the US? I would go to great lengths to have normal, glasses-free vision... I'm typically against using contact lenses, but I'd totally do it for this!

  • Won't work in your case, since the stem cells just come from the other eye, they still have the genes for astigmatism

  • I wonder if this might work to undo mistakes done during LASIK--too small an ablation zone for 9mm pupils. Any thoughts?

  • Awesome! 8D

To bad this probably won't correct near/far sided vision as the lens has already shifted. Oh well it's still cool anyways.

  • Just flipped on herre while eating 'n watching diz, awsome

  • Can it improve farsightedness / nearsightedness ?

  • Life can be very unfair. I'm sorry. Ask your doctor about autologous stem cell research and any possible eye procedures. I hope you don't go blind :\

  • THINK BEFORE YOU POST The stem cells are harvested from the patient's own eye. No mainstream religion opposes this.

  • Dude: this is done with the stem cells from the patient's OWN EYE. I don't understand your F GOD comment when you don't believe in him. Survival of the fittest man- your belief system has you "unfit" for survival.

  • @insightfulgirl Oh stick a stick up your ass.

I believe in GOD, but I don't want to go blind. GTFOver yourself.

Hell, I could use this treatment.

  • If only you could see what I've seen with your eyes.

  • this is incredible and shows you the power of stem cells..

  • (adult stem cells), embryonic stem cells excel at creating tumors.

  • As a keratoconus sufferer - this is fantastic. I hope this will help me! This gives me hope that one day I will be able to lead a more normal life - congratulations - all the best and keep up the great work !!

  • Is there any indication as to what type condition they are testing this for?

  • yeah it's great news, stemcells are the future

  • This is so awesome!!!!
