I've got new parts to build a new gaming rig, and my mate suggested I buy 2 HDDs, and put them in a raid 0 array, then store my OS, and anything I download or games I install onto the SSD. So then what are the HDDs doing?
@XUnit5ive do as i'm going to do with my build. buy an SSD and 2 HDDs. Then use the ssd for boot up the os and put the 2 HDDs in raid 1 to storage anything you want
so im having trouble setting up raid i installed a program to give me more hdd space but now my hdd makes a wierd clicking noise when i turn it on i just wanted to get a raid plz help thank u (:
Wait, I don't get it... In raid 1, if you simply copy the same data on every disk in the array -- you don't get more capacity at all... raid 1 simply backs up the data... I could do the same manually... :\ or did I missed the whole point? cause i thought going to a higher raid level would result in more storage capacity... :\
@aryesegal1988 No, RAID 6 is like RAID 5 but you can now lose 2 disks instead of 1 (and lower performance when you use the same (amount of) disks.
RAID7 is RAID4 but it uses also a specialised controller, which Storage Computer patented and called RAID7 (so RAID4+: faster but you need a controller with processor and cache now).
And there aren't any higher levels, only multiple levels (10, 30, 50, 51)
what are the chances that one of my hard drive fails in raid 0? i have heard and read about this for while now. does it mean one of my drives has increased chance to fail than back when it was a single drive?
Since Linus can't answer on his channels can some one else answer my Question please ^^
1- can RAID0 be done one a normal hard drive with a SSD ? (Normal+SDD) in raid0
2- can i make 2SSDs(or 2normal hard drives) in RAID0 and use them for programs and so.. and (ON the same pc make 2hard drives on RAID1 and use them for storage ) or 1pc can only have 1 raid setup ?
if you have two drives, i.e. a 120gb kingston hyper X ssd sata 6gb/s (up to 555mb/sR | 510mb/sW) and a 2TB wd caviar sata 3gb/s would i need to use raid to transfer data say if i used fraps recording on my 120GB SSD would i need raid to be able to transfer it to 'store' on my 2TB hdd? yeah thats right i think? (what i said) and answer would be of help thanks!
How about have 2 RAID0 setups and have them both connected through RAID1 data gets written about twice as fast while being just as reliably stored as usual
@MrHamit64 yes, under standard configurations raid 6 is highest you can go. But there are many more proprietary non standard levels available from different RAID controllers.
RAID actually stands for "Redundant Array of Independent Disks". I could put 12 $800 SSDs in RAID and to anyone who calls that inexpensive has no business talking to me!
I've had my RAID 1 Harddrives fail on me it was using 2x Hitachi 500 GB HDD on my mini back-up server(only pure important stuff got stored there) they failed both at the same time. I kinda prefer doing RAID w/ WD drives not Hitachi. But atleast my main back up server has all the files down.
@fjoa123 hes just telling you that if you have a single drive then you might have a 25% chance of loosing data ( not really 25% but just using a even number) but with raid 0 you have 2 drive with 50% chance of failure be cause they are acting as 1 drive
could i keep all my applications, games and os on a raid 0 and have all of the saved data from prograsmes and back up files on a separate hard drive ?
Hello, My question is this: I have an OCZ vertex 2 50 gb for a boot drive and it is almost full. I bought another of the exact drive. Can i put it in my computer on RAID 0 with the other drive and it will move half the data over to it or do i have to reinstall windows on an already configured dual 50GB boot drive?
Might be a stupid question to some, but if the 1 disk fails in raid 0, they both can not be recovered in terms of just data, right? or could I reformat the other drive that didn't fail, and start from scratch?...
@ejm110 the controllers remain the same.. Intel RAID, Marvell, and that other one that starts with J r the ones that comes with the motherboards.. so if u get another motherboard with a newer version of those.. it would still work if u use the same controller..
so its CTRL + I to enter RAID on an Asus motherboard.
But what about an MSI P67A-GD53??? because i am wanting to setup RAID 0 just for readf performance for my games.. as ive got an SSD for my OS, so i want to tboost the read speed of my Platter drives for my games too.
Great video! I wish he would have gone over why i could keep typing if a drive crashes at 8:15. Oh well I am running a RAID 0 so it is not applicable to me but just curious. i hope there is a detailed video of Raid 1/0 setup.
I noticed you deleted raid 0 before creating raid 1. When configuring 2 drives for raid does it have to be raid 0 or raid 1 only or can you configure both drives with both raid 0 and raid 1? Thus getting the best of both worlds (reliability & performance).
What if you use Raid 0 (striping) with 2x500GB. This would give you a 1TB array plus a performance boost at the risk of a 2x failure rate; and then use a system backup utility on your OS using a separate external HDD every 3 months or so. That way, if one of the drives fail you replace the drive, re-install your os, and then run the backup utility. Or does that sound inefficient? The idea is that you retain a performance boost, yet are able to recover lost data in case of a single drive crash.
is it possible to have 2 sets of RAID configs in ur pc?for example, 2x240gigs SSDs running at RAID0 for boot n shiz, and another 2x1TB WD blacks running at RAID0 for storage.
i think a good analogy to help everyone understand would be to say raid 0 is like sperm and an egg. without an egg, the sperm is useless, without a sperm, an egg is useless, together we make babies=raid0 lol. and then raid 1 is like having twins, haha. hope this helped
@trevelian23 not when the 2 drives being used NEED eachother.... essentially they are one hard drive, because without the other's data the dataset is incomplete. So again, if drive A has a 99% success rate, as well as Drive B, its 99% x 99% because they are working as a single unit, dividing the data in 2, with no replication. The chance of a single drive failing yes ramains the same, but we are talking about the failure rate of a raid 0
@AndrewHume1 yea raid 1 is a different story since its basically just a fancy term for auto back up lol, so if drive A fails Drive B still has everything, So it basically makes the failure rate 1% x 1%, which is incredibly small. When i earlier said the failure rate "doubles", technically i was wrong, raid 0 failure is100-( 99% x 99%), which is 2% and which is why my 1+1=2 actually made sense. Add a 3rd drive and its100-( 99% x 99% x 99%) ,which isn't 3% as i previously implied
linus... to setup raid do i need a raid driver prior before reinstalling of windows?or can i just get 2 identical drive boot into bios set to raid controller then boot , reinstall windows then recover my backup to the mirrored raid 1 volume?

Thank you so much. I am building my PC for photo editing and have lost information due to crashes. I will be doing this with my new set up. This was very helpful.
@chrisovgy1989 making a raid system with ssd's is totally useless, ssd's already have extreme write/read speeds, so configuring them in raid would be kind of stupid, if not very expensive. Have I missed something here? This video explains how to create raid 0 & raid 1. I just saw you delete raid 0, then created raid 1. Can't you create raid 0 + raid 1 at the same time without having to delete one of them? Also I kept pausing it midway but still couldn't figure out what you clicked on the drives to chose which are being selected for raid before you hit the enter button. Please enlighten me.
Is there a raid were I could have lets say 3 1tb drives in raid 0 with a 3tb drive as raid 1 to those 3 drive also is there a way I can raid a raid so have a raid card control 2 other raid cards so I could set like raid one with 2 raids that add up to let's say 24tb any help would be nice
What I don't get is why not use RAID 1 to have the same writing speed which doesn't really matter but use the second set of data for double the read? So you can load two times faster AND have the back up of your data.
Hey guys, what about SSD? I'm curious since I'm planning on buying a SSD and put it in RAID0. Since 2 SSD's are quite pricy, do I put a HDD as 2nd raid? Or do I have to work with partitions? Either that or the speed of an SSD nullifies the raid0 setup...
i wish he started off explaining what raid is and what is it refering too? is it something to do with the hardrive itself? or the cables? or the dvd player? or something i dont know

@MyPenisGrantsWishes so I can back up 1000 gigs on a 500 gig disk for example?
huberthoeve 2 weeks ago
@huberthoeve Let me explain:
RAID0, performance boost, (capacity of smallest disk)x(amount of disks), when 1 disks fails all of them fail.
So you use this for performance boost.
RAID1, no performance boost, capacity of the smallest disk, when 1 disks fails the other takes over.
So you use this as a backup.

@Thomasnoh8888 You get the capacity of the (smallest x 2)
ninoiphone12 6 months ago
@stsaintstalker9786 You don't have to. It's optional.
@vAscA187 I think it more depends on what you're doing. I would say yes it is better.

do you have to run raid if you have 2 hdds?
StSainTStalkeR9786 6 months ago
does 2 hdds in RAID are better than one hdd with the capacity of 2?
example 2 x 500gb RAID or 1t hdd
vAscA187 6 months ago
@vAscA187 They are faster but twice as likely to fail.

Quick question: What would a raid setup look like? Like in windows would it be shown as one combined hard drive or two separate drives?

@movietow raid 10...
jewie27 7 months ago
What I don't get is why not use RAID 1 to have the same writing speed which doesn't really matter but use the second set of data for double the read? So you can load two times faster AND have the back up of your data.

so now that I have raid 0 setup does windows recognise it as one drive?? And what if I wanted to create partitions?
yfzi 7 months ago
Hey guys, what about SSD? I'm curious since I'm planning on buying a SSD and put it in RAID0. Since 2 SSD's are quite pricy, do I put a HDD as 2nd raid? Or do I have to work with partitions? Either that or the speed of an SSD nullifies the raid0 setup...
Anyway, tnx in advance for answering =)
