  • But SSD's are not inexpensive :(

  • Who needs reliability

  • I've got new parts to build a new gaming rig, and my mate suggested I buy 2 HDDs, and put them in a raid 0 array, then store my OS, and anything I download or games I install onto the SSD. So then what are the HDDs doing?

  • @XUnit5ive do as i'm going to do with my build. buy an SSD and 2 HDDs. Then use the ssd for boot up the os and put the 2 HDDs in raid 1 to storage anything you want

  • SO WHAT IF ALL HARD DRIVES FAIL AT ONCE?

  • @vxphsycoxv in that case my friend.... you're fucked

  • @vxphsycoxv

it will crash down, no hard drive no Pc xD

  • so im having trouble setting up raid i installed a program to give me more hdd space but now my hdd makes a wierd clicking noise when i turn it on i just wanted to get a raid plz help thank u (:

  • @NCIXcom RAID= Redundant Array of INDEPENDENT Disk

  • @taejamhaha It was originally Independent Drives, though Inexpensive Drives was later adapted; both are correct

  • Which one is better for home use

  • @ninjadude991 without a dout RAID - 1

  • Wait, I don't get it... In raid 1, if you simply copy the same data on every disk in the array -- you don't get more capacity at all... raid 1 simply backs up the data... I could do the same manually... :\ or did I missed the whole point? cause i thought going to a higher raid level would result in more storage capacity... :\

  • great video

  • 1:10 :>

  • WoW 2 year old video & still pops up as a recent video in my list..

  • @knownuser09 Same

  • @knownuser09 maybe its the added to playlist that you saw

  • the disc-advantage. aharhar

  • is it also possible to: set 2 disk in RAID 0, and 1 disk in as a backup?

But if the two RAID disks are each 500Gig, does the backup one has to be 1000 Gig to allow the data to backup, cuz else it won't fit?

  • @huberthoeve No

  • @MyPenisGrantsWishes so I can back up 1000 gigs on a 500 gig disk for example?

  • @huberthoeve Let me explain:

RAID0, performance boost, (capacity of smallest disk)x(amount of disks), when 1 disks fails all of them fail.

So you use this for performance boost.

RAID1, no performance boost, capacity of the smallest disk, when 1 disks fails the other takes over.

So you use this as a backup.

  • @MyPenisGrantsWishes is Raid 1 the same as RAID 6 and higher raid levels?

  • @aryesegal1988 No, RAID 6 is like RAID 5 but you can now lose 2 disks instead of 1 (and lower performance when you use the same (amount of) disks.

RAID7 is RAID4 but it uses also a specialised controller, which Storage Computer patented and called RAID7 (so RAID4+: faster but you need a controller with processor and cache now).

And there aren't any higher levels, only multiple levels (10, 30, 50, 51)

  • RAID should be spelt RAED now.

  • what are the chances that one of my hard drive fails in raid 0? i have heard and read about this for while now. does it mean one of my drives has increased chance to fail than back when it was a single drive?

  • Since Linus can't answer on his channels can some one else answer my Question please ^^

    1- can RAID0 be done one a normal hard drive with a SSD ? (Normal+SDD) in raid0

2- can i make 2SSDs(or 2normal hard drives) in RAID0 and use them for programs and so.. and (ON the same pc make 2hard drives on RAID1 and use them for storage ) or 1pc can only have 1 raid setup ?

    TY. :))

  • @ymsforever

    1- No

2- I think both are possible

  • if you have two drives, i.e. a 120gb kingston hyper X ssd sata 6gb/s (up to 555mb/sR | 510mb/sW) and a 2TB wd caviar sata 3gb/s would i need to use raid to transfer data say if i used fraps recording on my 120GB SSD would i need raid to be able to transfer it to 'store' on my 2TB hdd? yeah thats right i think? (what i said) and answer would be of help thanks!

  • its asterisk not asterix

  • How about have 2 RAID0 setups and have them both connected through RAID1 data gets written about twice as fast while being just as reliably stored as usual

  • @tomek123kotek That's RAID 0+1

  • @genghisquan yeah, i just watched the next video, :P thanks though

  • Ah okay then. Thanks for letting me know.

  • Is 6 the highest level?

  • @MrHamit64 Raid 0 is the fastest.

  • My name is Joe and I'm average.

  • RAID actually stands for "Redundant Array of Independent Disks". I could put 12 $800 SSDs in RAID and to anyone who calls that inexpensive has no business talking to me!

  • Comment removed

  • @ryan9298b2 I'm sorry but according wikipedia, Linus right :)

I'm sorry I can't give you a link, because wikipedia is on blackout. You can check it your self

  • Raid 0 and Raid 1 is a lot better on SSD's.

  • Very helpful!

  • thanks

  • press 7 a lot of times, weregonnato

  • Redundant Array of INDEPENDENT Disks?

  • @epicfail022 inexpensive.

  • Who needs cases?

  • You make the best Vids. TY so much!

  • I can't press ctrl-i when the system tells me to. I can follow other commands, but not press ctrl-i. Can anyone help?

  • I've had my RAID 1 Harddrives fail on me it was using 2x Hitachi 500 GB HDD on my mini back-up server(only pure important stuff got stored there) they failed both at the same time. I kinda prefer doing RAID w/ WD drives not Hitachi. But atleast my main back up server has all the files down.

  • so this work only with 2 hardrives???

  • I have RAID 0 i believe and I never had a single issue with it ;)

  • youtube.com/watch?v=-Ojm5eY-i_Q

  • Wait. Who farted at 2:27?

  • i thought it was "indepedent" discs..

  • @TheAdamWadd Sometimes it is. It all depends on who you ask.

  • Nice video. Thanks for the info!

  • Could you have have one physical hdd's make to partions in that hdd and then Raid 0 those two?

  • Is it actually THAT dangerous to do RAID 0?

  • @fjoa123 hes just telling you that if you have a single drive then you might have a 25% chance of loosing data ( not really 25% but just using a even number) but with raid 0 you have 2 drive with 50% chance of failure be cause they are acting as 1 drive

  • if i put 2 drives in raid 0 will they work on other computer?

  • could i keep all my applications, games and os on a raid 0 and have all of the saved data from prograsmes and back up files on a separate hard drive ?

  • Is it possible to create portions on RAID1 configurations?

  • 8:04 Great Dance!

  • very good video...simple and clear...Thank you very much....

  • Fantastic!!! So clear and concise! Well done!

  • I have 4 harddrives (120GB SSD) So I did RAID 0 on 2 of them, then RAID 1 on each of those drives, just so they have a backup

  • @applefreak711 um you know you could have just setup a RAID 10 right? It's the same thing but easier to setup.

  • @z2x4c6x Oh shit. D: INTERNET Y U NO TELL ME ABOUT RAID 10?!?!

  • so couldnt i install win 7 on raid 1, then remove one drive, replace it, remove again, etc

then i will have multiple drives with windows, but only paid for it once....

  • Comment removed

  • To begin with is not Rebundant array of inexpensive disk the correct term is rebundant array of independent disks

  • @carias1521 rebundant isnt a word

  • SHIT, A POWER SUUUURRR-

  • trop fort

  • Awesome video mate!! Even though i know jack about raid i just learned something.

  • did he just fart on 2:26?

  • I would have personally called it, RAID 0, block striping without parity. RAID 1, block mirror without parity. Otherwise decent video.

  • what if the motherboard died

  • so its CTRL + I to enter RAID on an Asus motherboard.

But what about an MSI P67A-GD53??? because i am wanting to setup RAID 0 just for readf performance for my games.. as ive got an SSD for my OS, so i want to tboost the read speed of my Platter drives for my games too.

    Thanks

  • man its kinda like eyefinity technologic take 3 screen and pull it all togheter as one

  • on a planet of 5 billion poor people we should take inexpensive out of RAID

  • @sondano RAED, redundant array Expensive drives xD

  • @DeLTANinJaNicK much better :)

  • @sondano Its Redundant Array of Independant Disks on Inexpensive

  • @sondano We did!

It's been commonly known as "redundant array of independent disks" for over a decade.

  • @sondano Actually they made a mistake its "Redundant Array of Independent Disks not inexpensive but Independent.

  • Great video! I wish he would have gone over why i could keep typing if a drive crashes at 8:15. Oh well I am running a RAID 0 so it is not applicable to me but just curious. i hope there is a detailed video of Raid 1/0 setup.

  • 8 people aren't redundant.

  • I noticed you deleted raid 0 before creating raid 1. When configuring 2 drives for raid does it have to be raid 0 or raid 1 only or can you configure both drives with both raid 0 and raid 1? Thus getting the best of both worlds (reliability & performance).

  • @90210blackman Are you retarded?

  • so it should be called AID 0? O.O

  • Does RAID 0 give exactly double the performance?

  • not inexpensive, independent

  • @QuadroNVS it used to mean both but independant makes the most sense now become there is more inexpensive drives than expensive one now

  • Does Raid 0 help game levels load faster?

  • @jewie27 Certainly.

  • for some reason 3 of my 1 tb drives arent being detected now after getting 2 ssds by the intel matrix

  • What if you use Raid 0 (striping) with 2x500GB. This would give you a 1TB array plus a performance boost at the risk of a 2x failure rate; and then use a system backup utility on your OS using a separate external HDD every 3 months or so. That way, if one of the drives fail you replace the drive, re-install your os, and then run the backup utility. Or does that sound inefficient? The idea is that you retain a performance boost, yet are able to recover lost data in case of a single drive crash.

  • 8:31

    Edpisode

  • will raid 0 help with load times for video games like fallout

  • "slight read boost" was disappointed linus

  • Hitachi Deathstar

  • PONGAN SUBTITULOS EN ESPAÑOL. TAMBIEN HABEMOS MUCHOS LATINOS INTERESADOS EN TUS TUTORIASLES. HUEVON

  • hey linus,

is it possible to have 2 sets of RAID configs in ur pc?for example, 2x240gigs SSDs running at RAID0 for boot n shiz, and another 2x1TB WD blacks running at RAID0 for storage.

    thnx

  • If your raid controller dies you loose all your data. : )~

  • i think a good analogy to help everyone understand would be to say raid 0 is like sperm and an egg. without an egg, the sperm is useless, without a sperm, an egg is useless, together we make babies=raid0 lol. and then raid 1 is like having twins, haha. hope this helped

  • @daxxjapxx lol i know that this is late but the twins is a bot morbid lol. If one dies it doesnt matter cuz you have a second one. lmao

  • @Captainchiggs hahahaha classic. if you have twins they are f****d, lol!

  • @trevelian23 not when the 2 drives being used NEED eachother.... essentially they are one hard drive, because without the other's data the dataset is incomplete. So again, if drive A has a 99% success rate, as well as Drive B, its 99% x 99% because they are working as a single unit, dividing the data in 2, with no replication. The chance of a single drive failing yes ramains the same, but we are talking about the failure rate of a raid 0

  • @AndrewHume1 yea raid 1 is a different story since its basically just a fancy term for auto back up lol, so if drive A fails Drive B still has everything, So it basically makes the failure rate 1% x 1%, which is incredibly small. When i earlier said the failure rate "doubles", technically i was wrong, raid 0 failure is100-( 99% x 99%), which is 2% and which is why my 1+1=2 actually made sense. Add a 3rd drive and its100-( 99% x 99% x 99%) ,which isn't 3% as i previously implied

  • linus... to setup raid do i need a raid driver prior before reinstalling of windows?or can i just get 2 identical drive boot into bios set to raid controller then boot , reinstall windows then recover my backup to the mirrored raid 1 volume?

  • is it posible to create a partition in raid 1 configuration? and in the event of hardisk failure, can i still use my operating system on the other disk?

  • 7:35 LOL

  • Thank you so much. I am building my PC for photo editing and have lost information due to crashes. I will be doing this with my new set up. This was very helpful.

  • does raid 0 still give a performence boost to ssd ....

  • @chrisovgy1989 making a raid system with ssd's is totally useless, ssd's already have extreme write/read speeds, so configuring them in raid would be kind of stupid, if not very expensive. You don't need even better speeds out of your ssd's, if you have 2 ssd's you would be better of using one as a boot drive and one as a storage drive, than using raid. But in theory yes, it would give you a performance boost.

  • @TheFlexisflexer i have 2 of thies OCZ 60GB Solid 3 SSD and i want to put windows 7 on thm and wow :) + some old game " battlefields" lol don`t need them as extra space id rather have them as speed because iv also got 4 1t 7200 rpm hdd iv got space for other junk but want thm as just for gaming...

  • If you have a hard drive failure in raid 0 can you reformat the good drive get another and start from scratch?

  • @ligerman30 yes

  • Have I missed something here? This video explains how to create raid 0 & raid 1. I just saw you delete raid 0, then created raid 1. Can't you create raid 0 + raid 1 at the same time without having to delete one of them? Also I kept pausing it midway but still couldn't figure out what you clicked on the drives to chose which are being selected for raid before you hit the enter button. Please enlighten me.

  • Is there a raid were I could have lets say 3 1tb drives in raid 0 with a 3tb drive as raid 1 to those 3 drive also is there a way I can raid a raid so have a raid card control 2 other raid cards so I could set like raid one with 2 raids that add up to let's say 24tb any help would be nice

  • @gleaner38 Honestly i dont know, But this is a perfect "Yo Dawg" joke XD

  • @Thomasnoh8888 You get the capacity of the (smallest x 2)

  • @stsaintstalker9786 You don't have to. It's optional.

@vAscA187 I think it more depends on what you're doing. I would say yes it is better.

  • do you have to run raid if you have 2 hdds?

  • does 2 hdds in RAID are better than one hdd with the capacity of 2?

    example 2 x 500gb RAID or 1t hdd

  • @vAscA187 They are faster but twice as likely to fail.

  • hey guy should i get 1 wd cavier black 1tb sata3 non raid or 2 cavier blue 1tb disks sata3 in raid 0

  • edpisode. nice.

  • QUIK question: lower stripe size equals more performance?

  • Thanks for explaining

  • Quick question: What would a raid setup look like? Like in windows would it be shown as one combined hard drive or two separate drives?

  • Is the external raid video still going to be posted ? I'm really looking forward to that vid

  • Would it be possible to run raid 10 and raid 0 at the same time using 6 drives?

  • Great video...Thanks for the help.

  • dude you are so awesome

  • You, sir, are one hell of a trainer. That was an excellent explanation for beginners

  • Thanks for the helpful information!

Got to love the dance at 8 mins!

  • I don't speak english at all, im from south america but i undestood all the info. Thanks Linus :)

  • @GigaByte0z how come u can type it?lol

  • Thanks a lot !!

  • Thanks

  • Hi I have 2 500GB western digital black edition and I have the rampage 2 extreme can you help me pls to make them raid 0

  • @movietow raid 10...

  • What I don't get is why not use RAID 1 to have the same writing speed which doesn't really matter but use the second set of data for double the read? So you can load two times faster AND have the back up of your data.

  • What monitor were you using in this video?

  • Comment removed

  • very well explained.

  • Thank you for the information.

  • If i drop my computer in acid i'm pretty sure RAID wont help

  • so now that I have raid 0 setup does windows recognise it as one drive?? And what if I wanted to create partitions?

  • Hey guys, what about SSD? I'm curious since I'm planning on buying a SSD and put it in RAID0. Since 2 SSD's are quite pricy, do I put a HDD as 2nd raid? Or do I have to work with partitions? Either that or the speed of an SSD nullifies the raid0 setup...

Anyway, tnx in advance for answering =)

  • lol Hitachi drives guess you don't like information security

  • Is there any way to do it without wiping all your current data in your HDD's?

  • Thank You! Awesome!

  • i wish he started off explaining what raid is and what is it refering too? is it something to do with the hardrive itself? or the cables? or the dvd player? or something i dont know

  • What's the name off that CPU cooler?
