  • This was one of my favorite Electric Company songs. I looooved Luis Avalos in this video!

  • If someone isn't too tired. Write the lyrics for me. Some words I really can't hear.

  • When you feel the world is caving in, grin. When you really take it on the chin, grin. When you think you need an aspirin, grin. That's the way to win, grin.

    s

  • I can't hear all the words. "when you're feeling down and ---" There's more. Wish I had lyrics.

  • Luis' comedic strenghts offset his weakness in singing. But the songs he sung were good.

  • Is Luis Avalos still working in television or theater? I never hear of him mentioned anymore.

  • Me neither. Rest of cast doesn't keep up with him either. Last I heard of him was something called "nosotros" - "ours" in Cuban Spanish. It was some kind of Cuban arts and performance collective.

  • Luis is still around, he was doing some voice-over work on some children's show. According to the DVD featurette, everyone had nothing but praise for one another. Hopefully, with the new CANE Luis might turn up there. He was hilarious as the 1st principal on HANGIN WITH MR. COOPER!

  • I saw him on an episode of "Full House," as an employee of the "Fabulous Ali-Baba Hotel and Casino!" It was the one where Jesse told Becky that he loved her for the first time.

  • I hope he does more stuff. Personally I liked him. TEC wouldn't have been the same without him - he was funny as H.

  • I love the lyrics of this neat song. And how the word, grin, shows off these funky colors.

  • Rex Harrison did pretty well in musicals, even though he had to talk-sing, rather than sing-sing. Even worse, he never did a song quite the same way twice, so he couldn't lip-synch. If you look very carefully, you can sometimes see a tiny microphone on him in "My Fair Lady", because he sang all of his songs live on each take!

  • Luis Avalos usually shouts and sings off-key in most of his solo songs, but he pulled "Grin" off pretty nicely, I must say.

  • It's cool you noticed that! Hate to say it, but if a person listens very closely to the music, they might hear that Raposo tucked an audio guide track in to show Luis where the melody was. It's bass and sounds like a simple keyboard first octaves or a bassoon.

  • I guess he was *that bad*.

<--- visualizing Joe Raposo cringing and clenching his fists in frustration behind CTW mixing board, then adding the guide track to save his sanity

  • Yeah, Joe wasn't grinning when he knew Luis would be singing his song!

  • I agree! "Oh no, not that guy!" or possibly, "Foda-se! Nao esse cabrao tom-surdo!" (Foda-se is a word, um... a little stronger, heh heh, let's say, than 'oh no'... in Portuguese it means something that in English would ALSO start with an F)

  • "F--k! Not THAT tone-deaf m----------r..."

  • Danny Epstein actually knew Luis couldn't sing before Joe knew. Joe had to hear for himself, and when he did, Joe pretty much said, "It's true, you can't sing." But the powers that be saw how well Luis meshed with cast. The decision at that point was that they would rather have someone like Luis than someone who could sing, but wouldn't mesh. Joe managed to adapt songs for Luis so that he would come off well.

  • Ha! I knew this story too. I'm glad they gave Luis a chance, because he certainly was a perfect part of that ensemble cast! No singer, definitely... but a great comic actor and killer at improv! I would have hired him too. How about you?

  • Absolutely. He's so good at playing off each cast member, and getting the laugh when he's playing to the camera solo. How could I not have hired Luis?

  • I love the music too. It's just so cheery and happy. Joe with a grin.

  • One of my earliest song memories from the show, and a catchy expression of the "don't worry, be happy" philosophy.
