Strauss - Salome - Birgit Nilsson - final scene part I

Birgit is outstanding in this Salome-role also ! You can not compare La Nilsson with other sopranos, she has everything from fortefortissimo to pianissimo !She is also a fantastic actress , with carisma as no one else ! Callas had much to learn ,Callas had just one expression " I hope my voice will survive this aria "!!!!!!!

@nedingen Moron, every lyric singer had to learn very much to do it efficiently... I completely disagree your statement about La Divina, but I match with you in the sense that Callas was not a soprano for this composition style, she was a more Verdi/Puccini/Bellini and so on PrimaDonna than a Wagnerian one (yes, this is Strauss but the point is the same: each composer has styles very different one from the other)

La Nilsson is just perfect in this aria and I guess in the whole play...

she gets what she can't eally have.where does this story come from. Bible is a crazy book but is it there or some other source. Woman's sexuality :this idea is still frightening.Rhasodizing with the highest member of the body the capitale! Strauss was smart to do this story .Made for pretty exciting risque stuff more so maybe than Wagner's mythologies. Salome is a teen back in the day that mattered little ,not sure about middle east 1st century?

The soldiers must have sliced his head like a loaf of bread and given her the crust. It seems to be only 2 inches thick. Like a deflated balloon. They seem to have given her only the wig. The only way a head could be stable on a platter would be if it was on a vertical spike. Or it would have to be a bowl. And then it would be very heavy, impossible to sing with that in your outstretched arms.

Nilsson was my 1st Salome. I love her recording under Solti's baton with the Vienna Philharmonic. She has the power, the bite and the fierceness for Salome & she sounds princess-like and lighter in the first scenes with Jokanaan. Of course I also love Caballe as Salome & Jessye Norman.

My favorite Salomes are : Nilsson, Rysanek and Welitsch. This performance is outstanding!

The BBC made programmes on Nilsson, Cossotto,Sills, Verrett and a wonderful one with Caballe. These should be put onto DVD as they are important. It shows what great singing was all about . This is wonderful, nice to see Dobson and Bainbridge both stalwarts of the ROH>

I've never seen this, thanks for posting, what a great treat! I own the Solti Salome recording with Nilsson and she's phenomenal there but here it's nice to actually see her doing her thing...she was a first rate Salome!...the other video I like watching is Montserrat Caballe's Salome...Nilsson could sing this difficult piece in her sleep....and she got really into the role!
