Hey can anybody tell me if it's safe to run this thing at 18V? Because I just got one a few days ago and I wanted it after my distortions so I placed it where my MXR Chorus was (the MXR runs at 18V and the ParaEQ is suppose to be 9) and I forgot to change the DC power brick plug-in to a 9 so I had it running at 18 for about an hour and it was devastating, definitely the heaviest sound I've ever had. Then when I came back I realized I had the voltage wrong, it was clearer but not as brutal after.
I wont finish a recording without doing some kind of PEQ. I have my eye on the Dtar Equinox though, this seems kind of a cheap knockoff (although the same price) aimed at guitarists who might now know what frequencies to use. This has a nice stomp feature though.
If you plopped this pedal in front of me, while I would think it was cool, I would have no idea how to incorporate it into music. But Andy just schooled me. Thanks PGS not only for great pedal demos, but showing us how to utilize them!
i've always been happy with a simple treble/mids/bass combo. never needed a separate pedal for EQ. if i'm recording i end up using a totally fully parametric EQ post-production.
but still - if i were to get an EQ - this'd be it no doubt.
By using an EQ pedal and hearing its effect and its use. But strictly in theory I must admit I can't mentally grasp why an EQ pedal is useful.
Shouldn't the guitar amp's treble, bass, mid, EQ be enough to shape the sound? Unless I'm already maxing a frequency on the amp, I don't understand why or how a freq knob on a pedal can be used to change the sound in a way that the amp cannot. Maybe it's a dumb question, or maybe I never fully understood EQ (even though it seems really simple)
Simple Bass Mid and Treble controls on an amp are no way near as precise as the EQ on the Empress. Also, having it on a pedal means you're not stuck with those settings, especially helpful for extreme EQ shifts.
Thanks so much for your explanation! Very appreciated!
With what you said, I read up more on the pedal and really understand what it can do - it's really impressive! For those who wanna know more, you can check out the empress effects website, there's a really long yet very clear description of the pedal and also a Guitar Buyer magazine review of it - really useful info if you're looking into further understanding or buying an EQ pedal.
Generally speaking amps only have 3 frequencies that are shaped, or, they have a range of frequencies that are shaped per knob.
For example, if you wanted to boost your signal in the 4k range, you might not be able to do it with just an amp. With an EQ, you can.
But, the reality is that it just gives you more control. You can use it conjunction with your amp to do some very daring things. I have four EQ's currently.
I like the idea of the fixed wah position, I wonder what that would sound like with a fixed wah....
I like the sound of the pedal when it's not scooped, and it sounded really great as just an eq when you had the drive rolled off. I wish it sounded better with the strat though
this sounds like shit

How does this work on Bass ??
BJJLH 1 year ago
@BJJLH The ranges on this pedal are not scoped for Bass guitar, get an EQ pedal configured for bass and you will get much better results.
