There's also a turkish serie inspired of the Count of Monte Cristo, untitled Ezel.

  • maybe its just my wish and u'll say i am weierd but i wish the sory would end diferntly and those 2 to be together even after ,and i'm reading the book now ,its slightly different than this anime but i like this anime cos its a little misterious.nice work for both parts (^_^)

  • the best novel in the world

  • 6:45 is soooo INTERSTELLA 5555

  • Man , this is an awesome story :). Thx for the upload

  • the opening song is retarded

    ... <3 Gankutsuou :)

  • oeh.. Count what a depressing live you have.. well.. keep ya head up?

btw theyre not gonna be like gay together right?

cuz the little dude.. blushes.. when he sees the count

  • @TokyoDogz he does kiss him in the end

  • The title music for this is painfully out of tune! At least they're beautiful to counter it.

  • If you have a wide imagination, the novel would be real better... But for those who don't like reading, you can just watch this but this misses many great scenes in the novel especially when the Edmond Dantes (Count of Monte Cristo) was still in the prison...

  • hmmm i got to try this series

  • ISnt That Opra From The Fith Element Movie?

  • 8:27 What a meal!

  • I was looking for a good new anime to watch and came across this! When I saw it was Gonzo I just had to see it!! ^^

  • the count of Monte Cristo is an awesome movie for those of you who haven't seen it you should

  • that opera women singing that song, its almost the same one in "The 5th Element" the women diva/ plavalaguna,i belive thats how you spell her real name

  • @ShAdOw1Diva1

Well it has to do with the fact that it is the EXACT SAME Aria. It's from the opera Lucia di Lamermoor, in case you were wondering. In the 5th element, the blue-alien diva sang in the beginning of her recital the same Aria! (before entering in that funky trance beat thingy...)

  • gosh my all time favorite anime here!!!! THank you!!!

  • アップロードしていただき

    ありがとう

    原作は海外古典ですが、このようなアニメが

    世界でもっと評価されることをねがっています。

  • the animation is fine but did the animator really have to add all those floating textures?? they're hard on the eyes and unnecessary...

and btw the party at the beginning looked like they were all high LOL everyone was raiiiinbow~

  • One of my favs. Still can't believe I found the Geneon release of it for $30 off Amazon. Brand new hard box set with all the disks. :)

  • if you want good adaptation of book check out french version of the story

  • dlaczego hrabia ma uszy jak elf?

  • ale łajno hehe xD

  • i read the book when i was in highschool...it also started like this, neh?

looking forward on this anime! hope it won't be upsetting since i read a lot of good reviews about this.^_^

  • My Number #1 favorite anime <3

  • *Owns the entire collection legally* Glad to actually support the greatest of shows. ^_^

  • I first saw this in Netflix last year, I think. Visually it was stunning and I know some didn't like it veering from the story, but I thought it original. It was still a heartwrencher.XD So it is worth your time in watching!

    Thanks for uploading it!

  • the opening song is terrible...but looks like a great series...Ive been looking for a decent adaptation of my favorite novel and this seems to be the closest one

  • I have to admit, this version is probably the closest to the book out of all adaptations.

  • this anime is great! its so annoying how people always want to compare books with films/series. just enjoy things as they are...

  • 6:08 thats a fancy ship

  • That must be weird o__o blue skin and all. I wonder if people were like:

"Uh, Count... you're face is lookin a little--"

"NNYEEEEES? *creepy voice and deranged face*"

    "A... n-n-nevermind o___o..."

  • what is this rated is it true to the book?

  • nah!

  • it tires to be but....the book is still better. However after watching the show I started reading the book.

  • i dont rember the rating of it and i only seen episodes 1-5 it sorts of sticks to the book and then doesnt but i like it so far

  • it's rated by critics as one of the best TV series of its decade. However, it's NOT an adaption. If you watch it expecting to see a great novel portrayed in animation, you'll just be annoyed by the changes made to the story. If not, then it's simply breathtaking.

  • the count is sooooooo seexxxyyyy :X:X:X:X i luv him :))

  • Maybe theve gone a little too far with the blue skin AND the elf ears...

  • how about the big fangs in his mouth?:))

  • Yes, them too. I didnt notice them at first :))))

  • this is a great show seen the whole thing it's like a vampire slash western slash scifi slash love story excellent..... i give it 10 stars.

  • The book by Alexandre Dumas is THE BEST BOOK IN THE WORLD!

  • the antamtion is..... addicting kind of

  • n they said pokemon invoked epileptic seizures!

  • WTF TRYN 2 BLIND MI! LOL

  • This is a gorgeous anime. Thank you for an upload of such good quality :)

  • Agghhh, the count has such a deep voice, it's hard to hear him talk... D:

  • this is the best revenge book i've everrrrr read. i HIGHLY recommend it. i loved it<3

  • I agree, and i really think the anime put an awesome spin on it. Of course, the book is always better :)

  • Yes, the anime is a great twist. Despite being an Asian treatment of a Western classic, and despite being in a sci-fi setting thousands of years in the future, it actually manages to be closer to the novel than many of the other versions. They added many details to this from the book that actually surprised me.

  • A friend of mine recommended the book to me many years ago. I fully return the recommendation to all of you who are watching this anime right now - it's one of the best revenge/love stories ever written.

  • I agree a really good read. I'm thinking of writing a screenplay based on this story.

  • the reason why this is not as famous as it should be is because it not an original work. it came from a book the count of monte cristo by alexandre dumas. but i have to admit the series made me cry more than the book

  • My top 5 anime is:

    1) Ergo Proxy

    2) Monster

    3) Avatar

    4) Whistle!

    5) Axis Powers Hetalia

  • The constantly fluidly moving textures kinda hurt my eyes :(.

  • my top 5

    1.eureka 7

    2.gurren lagon

    3.beck

    4.when they cry

    5.blood+

  • =O !!

    There's an Anime?

  • My top 5:

    1) Monster (the most underated anime in existance)

    2) Berserk

    3) Gankutsuou

    4) Eureka Seven

    5) Blood+

  • Monster isn´t underrated, I always hear positive things about it. And yes, it deserves it of course. :D

    My top 5:

    1. Legend of the Galactic Heroes

    2. Hunter X Hunter

    3. One Piece

    4. Death Note

    5. Gurren Lagann

Kaiji and Baccano almost made it in the top 5 as well.

  • Oh yeah its great. But its should be much more well known and popular. All of Naoki Urasawa's stuff should be.

  • I agree that Monster is underrated!! its not my fave anime but its still great

  • what?

i knew that the count was supposed to always be pale & cold, but not blue....xD

    i <3 this book!

  • Wow....the opening song's melody sounds strikingly similar to the latter half of the the first minute of Chopin's Etude Op.10 no.3 "Tristesse"

(yeah, I happened to be listening to it in the background and wondered where I had heard it before, and amazingly it was here?)

  • Im glad i decided to watch this! its stunning!

  • my top 5 is:

    1)Death Note

2)Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo

    3)Blood+

    4)Bleach

    5)Hellsing

  • If you're looking for something else that belongs in that group, try Baccano! sometime.

  • Good choices but my top 5 are.....

    1Wolf's Rain

    2Helsing

    3Karas

    4Eureka 7

    5Blood +

  • My top 5 favorites:

    1). Fullmetal Alchemist

    2).The Big O

3).Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo

    4).Gurren Lagann

5). Code Geass: Lelouch Of The Rebellion

    I Think it's a pretty good list, don't you?

  • This is the most stunning animation I have ever seen!

  • the intro song sonuds like the ending theme for "Monster"

  • Holy shit, they must eat ,drink and breathe pure LSD.

  • a few new anime to look forward to this season, CANAAN and Needless. nice action for first ep.

  • god bless gonzo for making anime!

  • Um... Were those an Alien Lizard and some sort of Trilobyte!? Wow... I could never bring myself to eat something that odd without only eating an unrecognizable part of it, like just the meat with a it of skin, you know?

  • Im reading the book right now, im half way through but i think it's amazing! ^^

  • I've watched the entire series before. It's basically an artful and interesting retelling of the classic Count of Monte Cristo Story. Its basically a futuristic version.

  • Is this connected to the novel?

  • How does this compare to "Le Chevalier D'Eon"?

  • Wonderful opening theme...

  • ...it's one of the best...

  • wat bout hellsing, FMA, or naruto?

  • Haven't seen Hellsing... But if it's from Gonzo, it should be tight!

Fullmetal Alchemist is, too, one of the greatest animes ever...

    But Naruto? HAH!!!

I'll admit the first 20 minutes were VERY emotional...

But... from then on it proceeds like every other shonen... And the three main characters aren't even that good/likable!

If there is a series, where NONE of the leads are in your Top 5 Fav character list, it's a bad series.

It has it's moments... but not consistent...

  • truth is, naruto sucks. i just added it cuse last time i said that i got spamed...T.T

but yeah, hellsing ISNT by gonzo but it is kick ass. i think the count and one of the main characters have the same voice actor (japanese wise). i highly recomend it though. :D

  • THANK YOU! NARUTO IS TERRIBLE, STUPID STORY, STUPID HUMOR AND TERRIBLY OVERRATED! Finally someone agrees with me

  • Naruto is a good starter anime, because, if you compare it to others later on, it is very similar to Saturday morning cartoons in U.S.

The humor is cheesy, Story could've been more thoroughy explored.

But the 3 leads, just, aren't, cool...

My favs are Rock Lee, Gaara, and Neji.

And guess what? None are the leads!

    Very bad...

  • Hellsing is Gonzo, because last night I watched up to ep 8.

My assessment: Strong start, but it gets repititve. After ep 4, I was sick of it... Only good if you like all talk and no walk.

And you are right, same sieryuu as the Count for Alucard.

And you shouldn't care what people think, if society was like that, we wouldn't have unique series like Gankutsuou. And we would be stuck with Shonen Jump clones...

  • first off, SRRY! GEEZE! second, what the hell is gonzo cuse i dont think any1 else knows wat it means except u cuse ur weird like that.

  • Ha ha, When I say Gonzo, I am referring to the studio who made it.

And of course people know what I'm talking about, and it's okay if you don't, because some watch, not really caring 'bout credits and the like.

More Gonzo animes are: Last Exile, Welcome to the NHK, Trinity Blood, Afro Samurai, Vandread, Full Metal Panic!, this one, Gad Guard, Samurai 7, Romeo x Juliet, Solty Rei, Burst Angel, Desert Punk, Black Cat, Blue Sub No.6.

Curious, what did you think I meant?

  • i agree naruto does suck...hellsing does kick ass...you should try higurashi no naku koro ni if you havent seen it

  • seeen it, read it, own it, wrote it, love it! :D

  • nice...do you have any anime you would suggest?

  • umm...anything by CLAMP (theyre bad ass! wuvs their anime chobits and x1999), vampire knight, hellsing....maybe umineko no naku koro ni

  • i love clamp...vampire knight i started but never got into it and i finished hellsing

  • Is Umineko connected with higurashi or is it something unrelated to Higurashi?

  • i think its related. if uve seen higurashi no naku koro ni rei ep 3 you'll get wat i mean.

anyways, howd ppl start talking about higurashi on a diffrent anime?

  • They both original from "visual text novels" from the same company. However you do not have to view Higurashi to understand Umineko. Though I have heard there is one small connection and also there are a couple fun easter egg-like allusions to Higurashi in Umineko. I'd suggest both of them because they're great animes.

  • if you haven't seen them soul eater, hitman reborn, shikabane hime, and Koukaku no regios are good.

  • I love the classic book of the Count of Monte Cristo <3 I hope this series is good XD

  • Thank you.

I adore Alexandre Dumas' work, and Le Comte de Monte-Cristo is one of his best!

It will be interesting to see how it is reborn as a Japanese animation...

  • this digital animation is taking some gettin used to. i love how the patterns in their shirts don't move.

  • It is a unique visual style isn't it?

The animators supposedly used digital layering to produce that effect.

However, I care little of how it is procured, and more so on how it can serve the purpose of imbuing the characters with a deeper symbology.

  • and the symbology that coincides with the technical aspects of the clothes is...?

  • Hell if I know yet, I just started watching this series!

  • haha, same. keep me updated if any symbolic epiphany hits you.

  • this anime makes me laugh, cry, shout it got everything in it loved the book, big fan of the movie and crazy about the anime

  • I'm actually reading The Count of Monte Cristo right now.

  • Same here! I want to get some background on it before looking at the anime. Do you have the full 1500 page version? If you do could you tell me where you got it? I have a Penguin classics version w/500 pages, but I heard you should never read the abridged version of this book because a lot of things are purposely taken out.

  • i had the unabridged version, and have the abridged version. the unabridged version is alot more vivid in the details, but sometimes i felt like it was going off pace, and it took me some time to get into. the abridged version isn't too bad, it gives you alot of the story, and you don't miss too much in my opinion. unfortunately the unabridged version is really rare. its not bad though if you're willing to hunt it down

  • Thanks so much for responding! If I find it I'll give the unabridged version a shot.

  • This anime is a little better in english

  • Where can I find the english version?

  • I'm not sure if you can find it on the internet but if you look around in a hollywood, blockbuster, or your library

  • I'm reading the book right now and I love it! :D Once I found out there was an anime based off of it, I had to see it. Thanks for uploading!

  • haha same here, I loved the book and freaked that they made a anime based off of it.

  • this anime was good, pretty faithfull to the book aside of the futuristic and out of space theme.

  • what about luigi?...i could be wrong because I didnt read the book, but were the count and luigi friends?

  • They were, but not to the same extent. Luigi's really only in one or two chapters. The movie is COMPLETELY different from the book. They're both good, but the book is really long and complicated, so they had to cut out and change a lot in the movie. (Fernand wasn't Edmond's friend, he was Mercede's cousin, Albert was actually Fernand's son, Jacapo wasn't as good of friends with The Count, etc.)

  • Argh! There's a skull in the picture of the two people! Is that irony?

  • love the artstyle

  • I love you. I've been looking ALL OVER the internet to find this online! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK!!!!

  • Wow.. I love the art style.

  • I like this series... And looking at it is kind of like being on drugs at first! But then you get used to it, and the effect isn't as much (just like drugs XD)

  • I LOOOOVE Gankutsuou! And I have looked ALL over the internet to find it!!! I THANK YOU!!!!

  • The count of monte cristo is living on the moon.......... interesting.

  • holy shit i love the psychedelic colouring!!

  • I loved the book Count of Monte Cristo so this should be interesting

  • strangely I find the patterns to be no bother, rather just part of the image to absorb and enjoy.

  • A true piece of art! I love this anime! Sad it is out of print though...

  • I hate these patterns SO MUCH!!

The characters drawings are ok, and I heard that the story is quite good, too, but... AGH, THE PATTERNS!!!

  • it takes a while to get used to the clothes. it'll seem natural if u keep watching. Chowder on CN uses the same technique

  • Yeah, I know the Chowder cartoon, and I saw this pattern-on-the-back-layer thingie in The class of 3000, too. It was okay in that, and I like it in Chowder, too, but it's too strong here. All the clothes, hairs, sometimes even the skin! It's too much!

  • I, on the other hand, love them xD

But i suppose is one of those love or hate things...

  • Wow! I have troubles trying to read the subtitles because I'm too busy looking at the art! I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like it before. The title of the anime made me curious because of the book and the movie, but I never really expected to like it this much. ^_^ Thanks for uploading it!

  • one of my favorites thanx for the upload

  • Your very welcome. =)

And to those curious, I do hope to post the remaining episodes soon. It just took me a while to figure how to make videos in YouTube HD. Once I finish getting Planetes up at user "Halfsection", I'll work on Gankutsuou.

  • I'm not trying to be rude or anything, but have any of you ever read the book? The Count of Monte Cristo doesn't turn blue, but he is paler... I'd suggest reading the book. The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexander Dumas

  • I have not read the book. However, now that I've seen the movie (which I love!), and seen the anime (also love!), I'm sure I'll love the book. =)

And yes, they made some serious changes from the novel version to make this show. xD However, I understand they wanted to be original, so the odd skin color doesn't bother me. In fact, I think it fits in well with the whole futuristic Victorian-style sci-fi setting.

  • The animation is so good. I love how the patterns move.

  • I have to admit, it took some getting used to (especially with the clothes), and I'm sure there's a few folks who won't like it... but I'm not one of them. xD I like things that are different, and this pulls it off in such an artistic way.

  • Lol. Sticking with being honest, I did not like it until the Count came into the picture. Before then, I was like "why are they trying so hard?" and then Count came and.. eh, I liked it.

  • beautiful

  • I agree! The visuals in this series are very special.
