What is most lamentable is that people watching this now won't realize that all of this footage is at least 20 years old when South Africa was literally on the brink of civil war. What is great about our country is how quickly we went from the brink of bloodshed to peaceful integration. The "gawula ngelizenbe" song (3:30) might be heard at a football or rugby game where both teams and both sets of supporters are predominantly black. If you ask teenagers and even most 20-somethings today who Malan or Botha (the subjects of many songs on this clip) were, few will be able to give a satisfactory answer as those people are no longer relevant and are slowly being erased from history. it's fascinating how deep the compulsion to sing and dance is among African blacks and their descendants worldwide. Singing and dancing underscores almost every aspect of their lives--love and war, life and death, etc. And you never see one who seems puzzled by rhythm. They all have the groove. But I wonder why? In a Darwinian sense, superior running and jumping ability makes sense. But I can't figure out what survival benefits singing, dancing and rhythm would have.
