I think it takes incredible restraint for a black singer to perform this well. Pretty easy for a white lady with a silvery voice. For a deep voiced, powerful black singer, takes control, intelligence, interpretive abilities. And I think nobody's ever sung this more beautifully.

When I was a youngboy ages ago, my grandfather was living with us and every year he would get his woodenbox in there was this old grammaphonedisk of Mahalia Jackson -- Silent Night Holy Night. I think it must have been a original version of one of the first that came out!
