  • I just found out that despite Kaye Wilkinson been born in Tasmania, she actually first read TV news for the ABC in Darwin way back in 1988. She returned to Tasmania in 1990 to present the ABC's weekend news bulletin in Hobart, before taking a commercial break by going to Toowoomba to read the weeknight news for WIN Television. While she was making the move, in April 1993, when the Mercury article on her was published, she wanted the Tasmanian public to know that she'll be back, and she was.

  • "southern cross is working for you" was our spin on "seven news is working for you"

  • Yeah, pretty cunning.

  • Now thats a blast from the past! It's cool to see some old footage of a few faces that are still working in news today!

  • I wouldn't put this promo in the same room as the 'Who's Who Of News' promos back in the 90's or the 'Best At Six' promo WIN News had done but certainly a marvellous promo.

By the way, do you have any of those WIN News Tasmania promos? I'd love to see them.

Does anyone know if any sort of this promo has been copied from some other station in the world? Anyone. Because it does sound like it was copied from somewhere else.

  • I don't think this promo outweighed WIN News and it's promos at that stage despite the fact that it was only three years down the track since aggregation

  • I still don't know what I've got, there's probably another couple of dozen VHS tapes to go through so I'll see what's on them so then WIN news can be discussed there.

  • "southern cross is working for you" was our spin on "seven news is working for you"

  • This is a remarkable promo. A promo that I've always been trying to reflect on since I first saw the promo, but considering I didn't have a recording of the promo, I was kept trying to reflect until this promo was uploaded. Thanks largely.

  • Then Nathan would go "Thanks Kim." then look over to the autocue super fast in a 'God knows what's just hit him' style and reads on from the autocue with out any cliches or half-cliches or anything like that e.g. "Hello everyone, coming up after the break..." like he doesn't really care about the sports news at all.

That's why I look to WIN News every day.

  • Whereas nowadays, Southern Cross' way of crossing to particularly Nathan Templeton for the sport is really amateur, e.g. Kim Millar would go "Now to Nathan Templeton for all of today's sport"

  • Then Colin would go "Certainly is John, the old Tiger dropped a two stroke lead today to trail to an Aussie newcomer at the Australian Open, and..." then read along with the next headline before the ad break.

  • At WIN News, newsreaders like John Remess would introduce to sports newsreaders like Colin McNiff, the legendary race caller down here in Tassie, to the news with sport and John would make a point about the main sports headline of the day e.g. "Colin's here for sport now and a big blow for Tiger Woods in the golf, Col?"

  • RE: "Colin's here for sport now and a big blow for Tiger Woods in the golf, Col?"

Spot on! I always watch WIN News Hobart because they present more national news than Southern Cross, plus John & Colin look like old mates.

Sometimes he makes jokes about John's massive pay packet, like when Tiger wins a mill at the end of the story & Colin says "That's just a weeks' work for you John?," & John says, "Yeah, thanks Col."

    LOL!

  • But in my opinion, I could do a better job than that Templeton guy.

  • Southern Cross have always been about employing women to present the news. From 1996 to 2007: Kaye Wilkinson, Judy Benson, Jo Palmer, and Kim Millar were all female newsreaders for Southern Cross during this time. In fact, Steve Titmus was the only male newsreader to take up a role on Southern Cross Nightly News at this time. At least the men do better when it comes to presenting sports news like Rob Fairs, Nick Duigan, Nathan Templeton etc.

  • Yes, during the summer period there were a couple of nights where it was only men reading. Rob Fairs doing the news, Nathan Templeton on sport and Peter Murphy on weather. It was the first time I could remember no females presenting and seemed almost strange in a way.

  • Really? I never knew that lol. It's very strange and rare to have an all-men news team for even just one or two bulletins in a virtually all-female parking zone.

  • Kaye Wilkinson was apparently an icon for Southern Cross Tasmania as a weekday newsreader, but more recently, she was reduced to been a minor reporter with a hyphonated name. But in my opinion, Kaye Wilkinson-Green will remain one of the best at TNT-9.

I adored her as I grew up from my childhood when the TV wasn't meant to be on Southern Cross.

I'd put her second behind Tom Payne as the best newsreader in Tasmania. I'd put John Remess a close third.

  • Haven't seen much of her around for a few years now. Anybody know what she's doing or if she's still in Tasmania or in the media?

  • I think she's retired now. I reckon she had had enough of media and journalism due to her career diminishing in a way.

  • Benson was dethroned from the weekend news bulletins due to the news of a total Nine/WIN revamp forcing the local and national bulletins to merge again and she announced her retirement from reading news after two decades on the job.

Don't know why she didn't get the spot as weekday newsreader. It can't have anything to do with the fact that her colleagues are more experienced or much better than her for the job, can it?

  • John Remess had always been (for as long as I can remember) been the weekend newsreader/second in line for TVT6/TasTV/WIN News when Tom Payne was reading, so naturally when Tom retired John got the promotion.

  • Quite right. Tom had been doing the news there for I think three decades. Now he works as a wedding celebrant down in Hobart and the last bit of TV he did was that Retirement Tasmania ad where he ends with "And tell 'em, Tom told ya" John was second in line to Tom for six years since he came to TVT6 from ABC Hobart. Yeah, great natural talents here.

  • I don't know how old Tom is now. But it would be in the vicinity of over-60, surely.

  • Judy Benson was a shaggy-haired weekend newsreader at one stage, then more recently she read the weekend news for WIN when the Tasmanian station ran two separate bulletins in an evening.

One local bulletin with Penny Tame and one national bulletin with John Remess.

  • Steve Titmus was an ordinary reporter who took over from Judy Benson as the weekend newsreader and then took over from Kaye Wilkinson as weekday newsreader before been sacked in '02 for some political reason, now more recently, he became the head of news for WIN and was a reporter for a while. I can tell you, he couldn't do enough to dethrone Penny Tame from the weekend spot.

  • The reason given for his sacking from Southern Cross was because he had taken up a PR Job for Gunns who are quite a political issue in Tasmania.

His reason for leaving the WIN News job a few months ago was the constant travelling between his family and home in Launceston and the WIN Newsroom in Hobart.

  • Yes that was it. That PR job at Gunns was a big topic on Media Watch back in '02 as far as I know. It must be a pain in the butt to have to travel from one side of the state to another and then back again every day.

  • How times have changed since then. Kim Millar was a dorky and nerdish over-intelligent reporter, and now she's a good-looking weekend newsreader.

  • You know the girl with the black clothing, black hair and glasses with a notebook jopping a few notes down at the 17 second mark of this video? Is that Kim Millar?

  • Yep, she looks quite different now.
