What's really interesting is that some people's attitudes change when the gas prices rise and all of sudden my bike is cool.

We have about 300 people killed in accident, scross the whole of denmark, every year. Which is, frankly, apretty dang low accident rate, compaired to other countries.

Mostly, people die from driving too fast into corners than what they or their car can handle.

On a sidenote, if you see a truck with it's blinkers on, and it *has* started to turn, he can no longer see you in his mirrors. Don't drive into his path!

@paolito777 As far as the casualty rate, that is the official number released by Vejdirektoratet, aka the people that keep an eye out on our roads and the accident that happen there.

And indeed, the 300 is for all of Denmark (not just Copenhagen, but also Jylland and Fyn and Bornholm and so forth) and all types of accidents, during 2009, it was 309 to be precise. Numbers for 2010 are not complete yet, but they seem similar.

Though people from Jutland are indeed strange! :)

Copenhagen is a very beautiful city with cool people, by and large. The standard of living is quite lower than the US, in that they tax the hell out of people. The country has virtually no military budget... like many European nations... they rely on the US to save them, time and time again with our dollars and our blood. In fact, European nations that are rather socialist were such dismal failures, they had to create the EU and devalue their own currencies. And they are floundering... oh well.

At least these folks can sleep at night knowing if they lost there job (which is not a big issue, they have a much lower unemployment rate than USA) they would still have healthcare, not lose a home due to medical bills and insurance company issues. They expel more carbon dioxides per minute, but their journey is also shorter. It's the same debate on Walking vs. Running.

Basically, it boils down to "it's roughly equal".

If you move the same weight, over the same distance, using the same route, the fuel consumption is the same, until you reach speeds where aerodynamic drag starts to play a large role.

With a bicycle, you move a little more weight, but can roll down the hills, saving energy, which evens it out.

However, when you get in your car, you transport a few thousand pounds more everywhere you go. A car also has a tremendously larger carbon footprint once it reaches the showroom floor than a bicycle does.

As for cars, yes, the average car is indeed more polluting, though the ones they used in Shell eco-Marathons are getting to the point where they expel less CO2 than a walking man. Pretty cool actually. :)

@Jesus45U Dont forget, that besides CO2, cars also emit other pollution, Carbon monoxide, sulfur Dioxide (diesel), Benzine (a carcinagin), fine particle contaminants, as well as other harmful chemicals. This cannot be said for a person walking or on a bike. There is other pollution other then greenhouse pollution. A fact people seem to have forgotten.

@KrunchyJD That is certainly true. Mind you, you should not choose muscle power over anything else. In some applications, musclepower will indeed be more polluting trough secondary means, than a more conventional power source.

I once read an article that described how an electrical water pump that gets it's power from an oil power plant will pollute less than a donkey pumping water, because the donkey needs a lot of food, and since making food also pollutes - the result favored electricity.

This said, the vast majority of people would not consume any more food resources except for probably water, if they in stead of driving a car, rode a bike, they would just get healthier.

This is true - For short trips, the bike reigns supreme. And adds some much need motion in western societies. For longer trips, however, you start loosing too much time, which means that your Quality of Life detoriates since you miss out time with the ones you wants to be with.

What I meant, is that you could substitute technology and muscle power in many areas of life, but not all areas are improvements in regards to pollution with muscle power. Water Irrigation is an example.

If you only have a singlular city center, yes.

There are better ways of building a city, than a big empty sprawl with a 6 lane highway into town.

Take a city like copenhagen, where you had like a hundred small cities fused into one big city. That means it has a distributed city core, which means your average travel distance is quite low, despite there being no skyscrapers or anything. And that means that bicycles becomes even better.

And that's what we should aim for.

Eh ... in the large scale of it, the earths ecology couldn't give a damn about where the carbon comes from, to it, humans are just as guilty as cars.

Also, carbon isn't the biggest greenhouse gas as some might think it is, it's Water Vapor. something, which will increase if we get cars with fuel cells.

@Jesus45U When Animals breathe out they create carbon dioxide, but this is used by plants which create oxygen. This is the basics of the carbon cycle. They cancel each other out.

When people BURN carbon they create CO2 that is not cancelled out, because that co2 was created by burning something that stored carbon. This is "additional", CO2, that is not captured in the carbon cycle. The only way that that carbon dioxide can be cancelled out is by growing more plants.

Go read up on the Carbon Cycle. You'll find it explained in the FIRST chapter of any decent high school biology text. CO2 inside the carbon cycle has ZERO net effect on atmosphere.
