In America which is a car-culture nation, bicycles are not cool. Based on my personal experience the more I commute on bike, the more people think I'm poor and trashy. I need to move.
@WhoCares3001 Yeah, that's not all. In my city the more accesories that are on a bike the worse the stigma is. I've got lights and a rack on my bike and people think I'm a complete loser. What's really interesting is that some people's attitudes change when the gas prices rise and all of sudden my bike is cool.
....is also thrue that the italians in Italy they use the car to go to buy the cigarette on the other side of the road....I walk......still dont take Danmark as an example for the world...THE SISTEM IS MORE SICK THAT U THINK....
Hello. Im an Italian living in Kbh from the 1992. This video show only the good of the story.IN the rush our LITTLE COPENHAGEN GET STOCK IN A MESS OF CARS....AND ALSO FOR THE PEOPLE ON THE BIKE IS VERY DIFFICULT AND DANGEROUS GOING THRUE CERTAIN PLACE.BELEVE ME KBH IS NOT ONLY GOLD....WE GOT AT LEAST A PERSON DED EVERYDAY KILLED BY A TRUCK...IN THE CITY....u know when they turn and they dont see u ? SMASH..
We have about 300 people killed in accident, scross the whole of denmark, every year. Which is, frankly, apretty dang low accident rate, compaired to other countries.
Mostly, people die from driving too fast into corners than what they or their car can handle.
On a sidenote, if you see a truck with it's blinkers on, and it *has* started to turn, he can no longer see you in his mirrors. Don't drive into his path!
@Jesus45U GESUS ! Dont be so sure....ya i went too far with one a day....but u say 300 people killed by accident....bike accident...........OR any accident...cause DANMARK ....is Copenhagen....the rest...is Julland...
@paolito777 As far as the casualty rate, that is the official number released by Vejdirektoratet, aka the people that keep an eye out on our roads and the accident that happen there.
And indeed, the 300 is for all of Denmark (not just Copenhagen, but also Jylland and Fyn and Bornholm and so forth) and all types of accidents, during 2009, it was 309 to be precise. Numbers for 2010 are not complete yet, but they seem similar.
what did she say ? "......biking while you drink a beer....?" haha hell yea - Copenhagen is the light . Always gives me a kick to see the "dronin louises bro" and other views of the city .Love it so much. Hope the city stays as beautiful as it is now. Big Vote for more bikes (and beers of course ^^) ! Gonna be there next year - down at the baisikeli again ....
@Choleer Are you freaking kidding me? Nothin better than ripping down a mountain on a bike...except for skiing down a mountain. Riding up is just the added bonus.
@earthboundcruiser You didnt understand what i tried to say. Where i live, if you had to go to work on bike from one end to the other, you would come there all sweaty because of hills. Ofcourse when you dont use bike as transport but for fun it is better to have hills.
@Choleer Well, I'm from a place with many mountains and I love to commute cause it's so fun...Hills encourage an active lifestyle and active people who ride regardless of the mountains...hell because of the mountains.
Copenhagen is a very beautiful city with cool people, by and large. The standard of living is quite lower than the US, in that they tax the hell out of people. The country has virtually no military budget... like many European nations... they rely on the US to save them, time and time again with our dollars and our blood. In fact, European nations that are rather socialist were such dismal failures, they had to create the EU and devalue their own currencies. And they are floundering... oh well.
@laughingtiger123 true there is not one single european country fighting and paying with dead sons and daughters in afghanistan, a war that started bacause wich country got attacked? ... Just as in WWII . It was USA alone that made all wrong right....GB for example didn't do shit man!! beither did the netherlands, poland france, etc etc.... can you taste the ironi you ignorant SOB???
@mammasut82 I thought is was all about oil? I don't think the US military gives a shit about her sons. As for WWII the US stayed out of the war for as long as possible...not really something a heroic country would do. Perhaps you might be suffering some ignorance as well? Irony is spelled with a 'y' by the way.
@laughingtiger123 I will take the higher taxes, thank you. At least these folks can sleep at night knowing if they lost there job (which is not a big issue, they have a much lower unemployment rate than USA) they would still have healthcare, not lose a home due to medical bills and insurance company issues. Education is affordable, not the mess we have in the USA. There is less gap socio economically/better minimum wage as well. They have the best transit on Earth just about. Sign me up!
@laughingtiger123 standard of living is better, not lower. they tax and spend. The USA is a war mongering, car obsessed, stuff obsessed, healthcare and education mess of a country. I am just calling our faults, and they are very significant. I like most W. European cities and the politics a great deal more than our own. I cannot wait to go back.
Co2 is not a pollutant. Without it, trees would die. You would die. The biggest emitter of Co2 gasses is... the ocean. Only phony pseuso-science and outright lying and fraud can help propel this new "eco-jesus" substitute for real, honest ecology... and spirituality and religion. BTW... communist group such as The International Workers Union state over and over again that through this glogal eco-fraud, they will acheive their political and financial aims. < their words.
Congratulation for Cpenhagen, this is the right means of transport and the whole of the world shoud go for that, this would help the planet by cutting down the pollution and also people could be healthier and saving more money to invest it in other stuff.
I wish I could meet someone from Copenhagen that could help me get the government in my country to make the streets safe for us to fide bikes like that.
They expel more carbon dioxides per minute, but their journey is also shorter. It's the same debate on Walking vs. Running.
Basically, it boils down to "it's roughly equal".
If you move the same weight, over the same distance, using the same route, the fuel consumption is the same, until you reach speeds where aerodynamic drag starts to play a large role.
With a bicycle, you move a little more weight, but can roll down the hills, saving energy, which evens it out.
@Jesus45U - Yes, when cycling you expel more CO2 than when sitting in your car and you do it for a little longer, depending on traffic and distance traveled. However, when you get in your car, you transport a few thousand pounds more everywhere you go. A car also has a tremendously larger carbon footprint once it reaches the showroom floor than a bicycle does.
@dkjens0705 true - But the discussion was walking vs. cycling, in which case it's often roughly equal.
As for cars, yes, the average car is indeed more polluting, though the ones they used in Shell eco-Marathons are getting to the point where they expel less CO2 than a walking man. Pretty cool actually. :)
@Jesus45U Dont forget, that besides CO2, cars also emit other pollution, Carbon monoxide, sulfur Dioxide (diesel), Benzine (a carcinagin), fine particle contaminants, as well as other harmful chemicals. This cannot be said for a person walking or on a bike. There is other pollution other then greenhouse pollution. A fact people seem to have forgotten.
@KrunchyJD That is certainly true. Mind you, you should not choose muscle power over anything else. In some applications, musclepower will indeed be more polluting trough secondary means, than a more conventional power source.
I once read an article that described how an electrical water pump that gets it's power from an oil power plant will pollute less than a donkey pumping water, because the donkey needs a lot of food, and since making food also pollutes - the result favored electricity.
@Jesus45U - People today already eat much much more than they need to and plenty extra to sustain a moderate bike ride every day. This said, the vast majority of people would not consume any more food resources except for probably water, if they in stead of driving a car, rode a bike, they would just get healthier.
This is true - For short trips, the bike reigns supreme. And adds some much need motion in western societies. For longer trips, however, you start loosing too much time, which means that your Quality of Life detoriates since you miss out time with the ones you wants to be with.
What I meant, is that you could substitute technology and muscle power in many areas of life, but not all areas are improvements in regards to pollution with muscle power. Water Irrigation is an example.

@Jesus45U The difference between humas and animals breathing out c02 and BURNING C02 is that breathing is cancelled out by plants, whereas burning carbon is not.
Eh ... in the large scale of it, the earths ecology couldn't give a damn about where the carbon comes from, to it, humans are just as guilty as cars.
Also, carbon isn't the biggest greenhouse gas as some might think it is, it's Water Vapor. something, which will increase if we get cars with fuel cells.
Frankly, the biggest effect is local smog, and for that reason alone, we should work on cleaner emissions.
But.. cars emission compaired to a volcano or Hells Door ? bah
@Jesus45U When Animals breathe out they create carbon dioxide, but this is used by plants which create oxygen. This is the basics of the carbon cycle. They cancel each other out.
When people BURN carbon they create CO2 that is not cancelled out, because that co2 was created by burning something that stored carbon. This is "additional", CO2, that is not captured in the carbon cycle. The only way that that carbon dioxide can be cancelled out is by growing more plants.
Sure, the balance of nature has been changed, but so far, nature hasn't worked by being perfectly neutral all the time, but rather that when an imbalance occured, something new came along that thrived on this new unbalance. Heck, mammals (humans) came about because of it.
@SuperAreYouForReal Therefore, all animal life must be exterminated to save the animals. And then all plants, because plant waste expels CO2 as well. You are, I'm afraid, providing an example of what this current, goofy focus on "carbon" results in. Your concern is entirely a function of your lack of understanding.
Go read up on the Carbon Cycle. You'll find it explained in the FIRST chapter of any decent high school biology text. CO2 inside the carbon cycle has ZERO net effect on atmosphere.
Yes, humans and all animals emit C02. However, plants then capture c02. Hence everything is in balance. When we BURN those trees, and when we BURN fossilised animals the C02 emmited cannot be balanced out by existing plants as it is a net loss to the cycle. Burning Oil, and Coal BURNS c02.

In fact, anything that burns a bio-fuel will expel CO2.
