Not really. The original is from Depeche Mode. The interesting thing about it is, that the original was meant to be criticism on christian sects, if not christianity on the whole.

Cash turned it the other way around and made it something like a credo.

I understand, if people don't like Cashs version. With it's one mike puristic recording it's not spectacular but intimate and personal. While Depeche Mode and Manson could never touch me, Cashs version burned itself into my mind.
