How to utterly crucify a song by the master himself. This very performance was the tipping point with my relationship with Lou Reed. Absolutely fucking shite!
What cultural thug put the ridiculous popups on thescreen - they're not on Jools's show. And it's information we either know or don't need to know during the song; I really don't care that Reed didn't like office work. Who does????.
It's true: Lou doesn't keep the tune. But even if I'm a great fan of Antony, it's not tomorrow he'll be looking at an even comparable list of timeless songs. So even if Lou's out of tune, he is THE man to sing this :-)
Lou should stop singing. No offence but some Artists cant carry it off in their old age. And Lou is one of them. He cant sing in tune here, not even close, and why Antony agreed to this hell I dont know. He has the voice of an angel. Dont get me wrong I love Lous stuff, but Jesus H performances like this are like a hammer pounding way at all the good stuff youve done. Lou should surround himself with people who are saying NO! STOP! They are his friends. Not the Yes Lou, No Lou, 3 bags full Lou.
@outofslumber They're his songs, man, who are you to say he shouldn't sing them anymore? Would you want someone telling you to stop singing your songs? "Hey Lou, you know that whole music thing you dedicated your life to? Well you don't sound like you used to, man, so you'd better just shut up and retire." No, he's probably long past caring about opinions like that, because he seems like the kind of person who thinks for himself.
Youre absolutely right. He sould be carried on stage (or wheeled) in his hospital bed at 85 to sing "perfect day" because after all who the fuck are we to judge when he can sing his songs and perform for his audience. I think you'd draw the line there, So dont act like there are no lines to be drawn. There are fuckin plenty of lines. Its just my opinion Lou has crossed a few, and the slope isnt rising. Its a steep drop hes hurtling down.
@outofslumber There are only lines if you choose to draw them. In a world of opinions there are no truths. That's a folly of mankind; setting limits for yourself, which comes from doubt, and further comes from fear. He can sing until his last breath, he has every right to. He has as much freedom to perform as we do to observe in that he can stop when he wants to, and you can also stop listening if you want to.
Thats my point. And where people would draw the line at a zimmerframe and wetting his pants and rooling, I draw mine muc earlier. Specificially to the point I think his voice is shit. Its just where Ive drew my line. And as much as youd love to deny it, youd draw the line at forgetting words, singing like a 300 elkie brooks and shitting his pants. I just arrogantly deem my line more refined and tasteful than your Zimmerframe line,
And hes free to sing them, he may be frre to sing them to an audience. It doesnt necessarily emean he should. I mean he was never a good singer. He's positiviely a bad one now, and getting worse. I have a voice like a fox farting at the early hours in deep fog. And I sound better than Lou Reed.
@outofslumber Now you're just completely missing the point. I wasn't aware I was speaking to a brick wall. When you say "specifically to the point," generally, a statement pertaining to the point follows. I personally like his voice, so your argument is invalid because I've exposed a loop hole in your apparent "all knowing wisdom of vocal technique and aesthetics." What I'm trying to get across is that your opinion isn't the only one that exists.
I never claimed my opinion was. It is just my opinion at some point singers should stop. It is also my opinion Lou didn't have a great, no lets say "good" voice to begin with. Again, opinion. It's also my opinion he should stop. You asked who am I to say he shouldn't sing his own songs. Meaning you deemed my opinion as some invalid from the start. So stop talking out of yer arse, deal with my opinion and move on!! He's luggin around a vocal zimmerframe.
Kind of a fun mix. Lou Reed, who technically can't really sing (doesn't mean he's bad though) and Antony who sings almost too much.
They're both great on thei're own, but the mix of protopunk and indie-artfolk (Or whatever you call Antony and the Johnsons), it just seems like their styles are a little too different to work with eachother.
well of course I'm sorry, I didnt see any ref to it - I stand doubly embarrassed for not thinking and assuming - good on U - I will try think before I post comments in future
@anthonynewsome I'm sorry for sounding so snarky in my reply! Before I met my husband and was introduced to deaf culture I probably wouldn't have understood the reason for the captions either. They've become such a constant in my life that I don't even notice them anymore.
@iamstass U have no need to be - it was stupid unthinking comment - the funny thing is I love subtitle movies - so what am I like - just having a bad wk - thanks for putting me right -
@anthonynewsome I put them on ALL of the videos I upload because my husband and many of my friends are deaf. Sorry if it "spoils the vid" but it allows a wider audience to enjoy the song.
@GiantDoucheNG erm...why not? My husband and many of my friends are deaf, and they LOVE it when they can actually find music with subtitles or captions. Many deaf people wear hearing aids and can hear at least some of the music, and even deaf people who don't wear hearing aids can still feel the bass/beat and love to dance.
@iamstass There is so much more nuance and complexity to music that it cannot possibly be allocated to text and still carry the same impact. I cannot possibly describe it more than that.
@GiantDoucheNG Well yes but having the text and feeling the music with the text is important. The lyrics add another layer that would have been lacking otherwise. Know what I mean? Deaf people could never really understand/appreciate music in the same way hearing people do, but they have their own unique understanding and interpretation.
@GiantDoucheNG mate, i'm deaf and i have over 200 CD albums on my shelf, I even got a Deaf mate who is an excellent drummer, watching him play you wouldn't know he's Deaf! Honestly, I love music and listen to it everyday (with hearing aids of course) Yes there is lots of songs I can hear the vocals but cannot work out what is sung but captions/subtitles helps with the pleasure of listening!
LR's vocal is not as restrained and tender as the "Transformer" version. But then again, he has the emotion down pat. Antony's evocative vocal fits precisely. The cello echoes some of Mick Ronson's consonant string arrangement. This is a beautiful song whose lyrics fill it with melancholy. It has nothing to do with the word perfect and everything to do with despondency and darkness. And you are right. The sweet sound contrasts sharply with the wretchedly sad subtext.
FUCKING NICE
