lol once i removed all my watchtowers in the whole city, then there were quite alot of bandits around, then the ENEMY came! and i was like Yeah! lets defend the city with the bandits as well as my (quite small) army. The result: they got butt-raped pretty quick XD

Or save the game before the invaders come, fight to defend and when you lose you just take the saved game and buy them off.
