Hammond's gear changes were probably slack compared to the stig - he wasn't getting the max torque in each gear etc. Notice he only begins catching up with the Mclaren at the point when he has finished gear changes and only has to floor it. Two incredible cars, all the ppl arguing about which is better seriously miss the point, they are over a decade apart and entirely different cars.

One thing i dont understand in this video, Is why they didnt use launch control? The veyron can do 0-60 in under 3 sec, and it doesnt stop until 253mph, They mclaren does it in (mid-high) 3s. But in the video it clearly shows the Mclaren pulling ahead till 100+ mph? :S

However, past 180 mph, the spoiler goes back down, and the whole car lowers, that way it can get to 252 mph. It would only be in danger of leaving the ground around a bend, where that spoiler really comes in handy. In a drag race though, not much fear.
