The whole exercise is an embarrassment to both parties in my opinion. Obviously this guy cannot establish his compentency. @edcika however the government must not only choose individuals that have the characteristics that you've stated. These individuals must also be capable of representing the Filipinos abroad as that is the real essence of being an ambassador or being a member of the diplomatic corps. The ambassadors that will be sent abroad by the government are THE REPRESENTATIVES OF THE PHILIPPINES and ergo, they must know how to defend the stance of the country they MUST BE COMPETENT. please bear that in mind.

The qualification of a person is not based on his degree as a whole, but the manner he answers questions and defend his stance must also be considered. Given that he will represent the country or he will be THE VOICE of the country it is with utmost importance that he already mastered the craft of DIPLOMACY and INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS.

Regardless what country, to be an AMBASSADOR reflects the nation. When SAUDI Prince FAISAL was made ambassador at young age, he had to undergo series of training and study as not to embarrass the kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Effort is appreciated, but as the way it looks AMB LEE did not make this effort.

I agree he has a difficult time aligning two English words, or understanding the notes that are being handed to him (which contain the answers), but the task of a diplomat is to be skilled in language and political science. The only credential he puts forwards is that he is a friend of the President. Is that how people are voted into office in Canada? Like him, you don't get the point. I wonder why...

As a Canadian citizen we never judge a person right away.It should take us time and effort to witness one's qualities. Some great qualities don't necessarily show up right away but once they do, you may be gaining a valuable relationship, that may have been missed by judging so quickly.That's how we don't belong to a poor country.It's about discipline and organizing things.

Mr. Lee an excellent chinese communicator and knows the culture very well. I bet his main goal simply maintain good relations within the country . By speaking with the leaders and establishing a friendly relationship.he maybe a trustworthy that's why the president appoint him.Usually much of the communications will cover issues such as foreign aid, and what exactly what the country expects of the other.His chinese speaking is perfectly fit to the country.Every country has different diplomat.

You're thinking of a generalized diplomacy, stating facts like good relations, businesses, foreign aid, and such, but seeing and knowing our current issues with China, I'd say we'd need a better ambassador, both trustworthy and competent. He doesn't even know where to start, when asked by Osmena on what his focuses will be, were he to be made Ambassador to Beijing.

If you cannot even present one argument correctly, be it in English, if you have no experience aside from honorary positions, if you cannot even understand the main geographic brawls between these two nations without being handed a note, if you cannot even speak English - and yes, I say English, because diplomats should be fluent in several languages, English being the bare minimum - then what are you doing there?

TrifectaXz if your diplomat is fluent in english to deliberate the message to filipinos then do you think she/he can deliberate to communicate chinese?chinese never speak english they speak their mother tongue.so therefore it's just the same thing...I may think that the president knows his competence in communicating to chinese. There are lots of interpreter in your country so he can speak chinese then their will be filipino translator I dont think its a big deal!!filipinos are smart people.

@BarbaraIsabelaax Of course he can. There are many diplomats around the world who can speak man languages, so it wouldn't be much to expect our ambassador to be fluent in two. He wouldn't be a very good ambassador if he needs a translator to properly communicate. See, communication is a very crucial part, and we cannot risk misunderstandings. We know our country's issues better than you do, so please research first before stating your mind.

Unfortunately, diplomacy and foreign service are not just about business.

But one thing I can tell you is that the President is not infallible. And questioning his infallibility (or questioning his choices, for that matter) is one of the very fortunate things democracy enables Filipinos to do.

We need someone with competence in diplomacy, and diplomacy involves negotiations and communications, which, in this case, surely needs competence in the English language as well. There's no point in being able to talk fluently with the Chinese if you can't properly relay the message to the Filipinos.

@BarbaraIsabelaax Obviously, you don't know the history and politics in the PH. Mr Lee is a political appointee, meaning he didn't go through years of building a career in foreign service. I think some political appointees are competent, and competent ones will be able to handle this hearing with ease and show that he is the right man for the job. Remember, we're talking relations with China, which is extremely important. It will be disastrous if we don't have the right person as ambassador.
