1) WiFi is needed for the Archos to go online. So, as far as I know, a wireless-router is a musthave.

2) Reboxed means something like repaired. The device was defect and the owner sent it back to Archos. Archos immediately sent back a new device and began repairing the defect one. It's like making it brand new again.

I have owned 4 generations of Archos..they started out great but have gotten really bad the past two. The 605 is the worst of them all. It is a giant peice of sheet. It may have 300 features, but it also has 10,000,00 crippling bugs and glitches. Problem is, that all the magazines reviewing it only test if for a few days and may see one or two. Plop down $400 on this thing and then use it for a month. You will be disgusted. Anyone who knocks an apple product after using this, is an idiot.

If you haven't noticed, on the message boards for Archos, with each new firmware, half of us are having twice the number of problems. I have been an Archos fan for over 10 years. This company is done. They have become an embarrassment. I ended up having to call the Better Business Bureau on these guys. I was told that they have a complaint list a mile long on these guys and that they won't respond because they don't care about the customers.

I'm sure they care about their costumers. A new firmware is on its way. And yeah, if you want good costumer service, go and buy yourself a callcenter.

The Archos supports subtitle-files, so there's no need for hardcopying it :)

an srt-file gives you the subtitles for your video...I used srt-files a couple of times. Works fine. You can select wether you want the subtitle to be big or small.

You will have to use a encoding program such as MeGUI Modern Media Encoder to interleave the subtile file and the video.

You dont have to interleave the files... your wrong. You just have to abstract the subtitles into a .srt file. The unit will (when it wants to work right) recognize the .srt files if they are the same name as the video file. Then there will be a subtitle button on the right side of the screen to turn them on or off.

I'm going to be getting a new player in the next few weeks and i seem to be stuck between the samsung p2 and the Archos 605. I've done my research into both but I'm still undecided. I have loads of movies and music that I'd like to have with me, and 8gig (Samsung) just wouldn't be enough. Does the shorter battery life of the archos get to be a hassle, and how easy is it to use it while on the move? (i walk everywhere). I just want that little something to convince me that it's right for me.

But to answere your question: if you read all instructions very carefully, there's no reason to be afraid that your warrenty is over by installing Qtopia. I thought it's easy to reïnstall your device to the newest official firmware. But I'm not sure.

I have a travel adapter on the way with the gen 5 cam, so charging speed will improve for me then. For now i'm 12 hours into charging from scratch and still no sign of the green light starting to flash ! Arrgh!

I have however been updating firmware, installing browser etc but have never unplugged the unit from the power so hope condition charge will be strong.

I know it may be some time until the green light flashes to indicate battery full, but is it ok to switch the unit on and check it out whilst charging completes?

I appreciate it may take longer which is fine, I'll leave it plugged in until the green light flashes, but will I affect the 'first condition charge' of the battery by doing so?

On a 4Gb device, you can store 4 or 5 movies...I was hesitating too, but I have the 30Gb version now. It's almost full for 80% all the time. I can't imagine how to deal with only 4Gb, but that depends on your use.

For surfing on the internet you must have: the Webbrowser-plugin and a WiFi connection

It can take 24hours the first time trough USB. When the battery is full, you will see a LED flickering.

Charging using the DVR-station or another adapter is way faster.

It's not a WiFi plug-in, but the webbrowser-plugin. WiFi is standard enabled. You can access the Archos Contant Portal (online service) without the plugin. But for browsing, you have to buy it.

You can only use your WiFi were a WiFi-hotspot is. So: at home, at an internet café, on airfields, etc. But not everywhere. And in most cases, the WiFi isn't free, but that does not depends on your Archos.

Avi is a container, so it depends on the used codecs if it will work or not. However, the most .avi files will work.

Some .avi movies downloaded from the internet contain for example the AAC-audio codec and to play that, you need a plug-in. But most movies have mp3-audio and will work fine.

You can't connect the Archos 605 directly to a TV...you have to buy the DVR station, travel adapter or battery adapter.

You can select whether or not you want the screen on the Archos to play along with the TV screen.

Battery life depends on the things you do with your Archos: webbrowsing takes more battery than listening to music. Also the resolution of a video has influence on the battery life: higher resolution-->less life. But I think, if you watch DivX-movies, it would last 4 hours. Surfing for 3 hours and music for around 9 hours.

No, you buy plug-ins to get even more. Plug-ins: Opera web-browser, podcasts (new codec-support) and cinema (also new codecs-support). But out of the box, the Archos is a good device too.

1) no, it isn't possible at the moment. Maybe in the near future. With Skype or something and the fm-remote control (not out yet, so I'm not sure if they put a microphone in it).

2) for now, you have to browse to your gmail or whatever you use. It can actually handle Opera-widgets, maybe there's one with an email service. But you have to buy the webbrowser-plugin anyway...

The Archos 605-interface uses Linux in the background.

First of all: you need to buy the plug-in to get the Opera-browser...otherwise you only can access the Archos Content Portal.

.avi is a container. It depends on the codec if it will play or not. DivX and XviD will play, if they have an mp3 audio-track. AC3 will not play out of the box. You need to buy the cinema-plugin for that.
