About the "softening", do you know "The Number of The Beast" played at the beginning of the movie "Spun "? I wouldn't recognized it unless for the lyrics ;)
Why apologize for "softening" it? This is your interpretation and you give it a far better edge than you're giving yourself credit for, and you don't waver off key once.
And it is piercingly beautiful and brilliantly yours.
