What happened was this: After days of clashes, Saakashvili wanted to negotiate. The Ossetian people were reasurred. However, during the night, they fired artillery into a Georgian village, killing 2 Georgian peacekeepers. The Ossetians then watched as the Georgians attacked, and attempted to garner sympathy. But South Ossetia is a Russian puppet, Russia had wanted to teach Georgia a lesson for trying to join NATO and being allied with the U.S. The Georgian assault was a pretext for war.

That's the point. I lived in a communist country dominated by the SU for 15 years and please do not ever tell me Russia is/will be a democratic country. It will never be one. They are not interested it it, neither the people (they do not know what democracy is) nor the authorities. They have always treated Poland, Ukraine, Georgia etc as territories of their constant and in a way "natural" domination.
