  • thanks william, always glad to learn more about our world and its many rich cultures and languages. did not have any children born to me the year of the boar (i like the word 'pig' myself) but did help give birth to many conversations between children here in mpls. mn and there in 2 china cities. fyi, the word MIR is russian, means 'peace' or 'world'. hence my utube site name, 'meremir' i.e. 'mere world peace', a simple goal from a simple man teacher dancer lover of languages cultures peoples.

  • The Chinese character for "home" ("jia") is made up of a "roof" radical with a "pig" character under it. So, home is where pigs are domesticated. It says nothing about a husband, a wife, children dogs or cats. That's all rubbish.

  • Thanks for your added input on the Chinese character described by the young lady. You are not the first to have told me something like this. It seemed even a bit far fetched at the time as the woman was describing this 'character'. My daughter and I got 'taken' by a more than willing Chinese lass, but I am more humored than offended. What the Chinese still have to learn is that the truth is always more interesting than lies and still can sell.

  • Yes, in the very literal sence, the Chinese (and Japanese) character for Home, has a roof radical and the radical for boar under it. But you apparently know little about Chinese culture.

In Chinese culture, the boar is associated with fertility and virility. To bear children in the year of the boar is considered to be very fortunate, for they will be happy and honest children.

So home is a place of happiness, fertility, and children.

The way you understand is wrong! It says a home is "sufficient" when you have pigs in it. You tried to be a smart ass, and you are just a dumb ass!
