Just because he doesnt do any hapkido techniques does not mean he is not a hapkido fighter..i mean the rules in this sparring match probably prevents him from doing any also to note he is a white belt and probably does not have the arsenal of hapkido techniques as opposed to a red bodan or black...For a white belt this was a very good match to watch and interesting, the kick boxer needed to know some ground techniques though, i feel he didnt know what to do...i hope both fighters do well!

Good hard fight. They have alot of passion! I don't believe in totally green fighters sparring, however. They haven't learned proper technique, and haven't practiced those techniques to be automatic. As a result, the instinct to flail around kicks in, and you start doing everything wrong. I see nothing wrong with 4 to 6 months of drilling techniques before starting to spar. Cross style sparring with beginners is worse, as they haven't learned to fight within their own art yet.

nice beginner fight :), i also do hapkido, you'll find you learn alot faster doing this sort of stuff, we do alot of this in class but with the protection pads due to some insurance crap :(..still this was enjoyable to watch the white belt in hapkido is gunna go a long way dont give up on it mate!

@carboncopyben Yes, GM MacKenzie is definitely a big guy. I was really shocked the first time that I shook his hand. They are really soft for being used to break stacks of concrete blocks. Lol. Was at GM MacKenzie's ceremony to recieve his 10th Dan. It was something that I'll never forget. We bought him his Gold Grandmaster's Belt as a gift. If you see him wearing it, it came from his students. :) Glad that you had the opportunity to meet some of the nicest people that I have ever met. :)

what a dilema for those types of fighters. The hapkido person only wins by getting his opponent close to him and on the ground, whilst the kick boxer only wins when his opponent is trying to hit him and counterattacking him. Usually, hapkido experts win kick boxers, unless the kickboxer is exceptionally good, because all fights end at the floor.

@shotokanmex01 What kind of Hapkido have YOU been exposed to? The place that I study at focuses on strikes, grapples, and submissions. You might have seen a bad style of Hapkido, but there are many types. If martial arts is your thing, I would recommend that you learn as many different types of martial arts as possible, but Hapkido is really strong (just as other MA) if you learn from the right people.

Hapkido includes ground fighting. It's based on tokugawa era Aiki-jujutsu. Same type of stuff BJJ is based. If you're reasonably certain you wont be attacked by a third party, and you're reasonably certain your opponent does not have a blade on them, and you're fighting on a soft surface, ground fighting is the ideal way to subdue an opponent.

Hapkido and kick boxing are very alike off the ground. Some blocks are different, some punching and kicking styles are the same, their are more of each in hapkido. But, when it comes to joint lock, take downs and grapiling in kickboxing these are non existant.

The kick boxer definitely got in some great strikes, but his ground game was pretty poor. The Hapkido guy also missed out on some easy arm bars and chokes and looked like he was having trouble checking the kicks of the kickboxer.

This is not a fair display or use of Hapkido. This is a fight under a controlled environment with rules. Hapkido has no rules. In all fairness, a properly trained Hapkido practitioner will break fingers, gouge eyes, twist off arms, etc. to win a fight. If you happen to put a Hapkido practitioner on the ground, you had better protect your face b/c chokes and eye gouges are coming....
