The digital media is different for another reason.....It is never biased to one opinion. Of course the searchers opinion may lead to biased information but while television defines our reality and influences both our our perceptions and opinions of this reality (by filtering out anything that goes against the channels ideology), the internet allows for every opinion to be broadcast.

And so it frees us from media control, and creates a network where everybody has a voice :)

I would like to post the idea to you dan, about the comparison between the interactive youtube community, and family gatherings around a projector (yes, the analog things with the spinning reels of film)

the interaction with producer and audience (IMHO) seems very similar with being able to provide feedback between the 2. (though in person holds the benefit of being real time - youtube IM upgrade anyone??)

I can not understand why youtube has yet to implement a live broadcast element to the site. So many youtube partners go off-site to Ustream and BlogTV taking their audiences with them. I think that youtube should start their own. Maybe call it Youtube Live.

I don't think that any idea, in of itself, is ever truly 'original'. YouTube is, like you said, almost exactly like TV. There are people making content, there is a place of display, and there is an audience (or a lack thereof). There are ratings. A 'TV Guide' of sorts pops up at the bottom of your screen as 'Featured Videos'.

I think that the difference between old media and new media is much lesser than most people think it is.

There are lots of communities around certain shows / writers. Look at Joss Whedon. His shows have a tremendous following with forums and groups dedicated to him. Unfortunately, things like that are a rarity but I bet that as time goes on we're going to see a lot more of that.

The main reason for this, I believe, is that TV can now be viewed on the internet. TV and internet will merge soon.

New media is going to revolutionize the way that people interact with media even more that may have already done because the internet for most Americans is the easiest way to access the media & it enables people to get information and news without all the garbage and spin doctoring that we see in the the television media today. It is now much easier for people to get the raw information & on the internet there are more resources for information.

Next year I'm taking a specialized course called "New Media". It's a career oriented program that's basically a new wave art class. It deals with everything in arts and communication from music to art to videos, and everything is using the newest hightech equipment. In other words.... Youtube is DEFINITELY a part of new media :)
