pretty sure if the whale felt threatened it would go down below the surface :) it probably just wanted to watch the race, but there was a large boat obstructing its view
Hmmm, that's funny. The PWCs did not even come close to "your" whale. Chances are that most of the PWC operators in this video have a VHF radio on them. "Swarm of bees." Still pedaling the same, old propaganda from the 90's. Loud, 2-stroke, smelly, polluting. loud.
Jetski's have no propellers.. Qutie honestly even if they hit the whale at speed, it wouldn't do anything to it. Apparently you people know very little about nature, or machines. If that whale was bothered he'd leave. As far as that captain "protecting" him. He'd be more likely to get a prop strike being that close to the whale then anybody that was coming at it.
I'm positive the jet skis couldnt hurt the whale as far as props go but the actual collision would probably depend on how much of the whale was exposed, skis only sit about 5 inches in the water and even less when they are planed. I'm not so sure it would threaten the whale's life, but I recommend not racing your water bike into a whale.
Jetskis do not have props like the boat all these whale watchers were on which could cut the whale. The boat would do soo much more damage than any jetski could do to a whale. It wasn't a jetski race from what I see.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe that most if not all of the sound produced by a jet ski is above the water. That makes the craft impossible to track for the whales unless they see it coming. The rider could startle the animal even if he doesn't hit it. That is harassment.
As an avid scuba diver I can assure you that you can definitely hear jet skis from underwater. In fact, sound travels much faster in water due to the density of the medium.
Whales have a great sense of hearing. They can hear you coming about two miles away. If they don't want you around, they will clear off. They can swim at about 30 knots and dive for 20 minutes - this means that if they don't want to be around you, they can dive and be ten miles away before they re-surface - well out of sight and not really trackable.
Thats true, if he didnt want to hang out he would have already been gone. Hes the fastest aquatic mammal in the world. 20 knots +.... If he wanted to dip hed be gone, its obvious he just wanted to hang out
Wow. You'd obviously have to be quite stupid to think that. However, to actually post or say that it means you are completely unable to mask your stupidity.
I was in Mexico and was kyaking surrounded by dolphins off the hotel. Suddenly, a pair of jet skiers came racing by and the dolphins left. Such a beautiful tranquil moment ruined by these assholes.
YOU GOT TO RESPECT THE SEA OTHERWISE IT'S GONNA COME BACK TO YOU!! sooner or later.

seems like you should be protecting the jet skis from the whale. They have no propellers and that animal probably weighs 100+tonnes lol ;)

Well ya ,but collisions will still shatter bones and will not only injure the whale but the jet skiier who hits it.

It's not a race, probably an organized ride of some sort. There's no way an express cruiser would run lead boat in a race.
