Tarkovsky, Nostalghia (1983)

To me the meaning of the fusion of these two scenarios represents a communion, Sergei is nostalgic of Russia throughout the film, but at the end when he's compelled to take the candle three times back and forth in the pool, seen as perhaps a transference of hope, he becomes inextricably tied to Italy; the songs at the beggining of the film also suggests this, a Russian(?) woman's chant fuses with the Requiem by Verdi.

I believe it has nothing to do with Narcissus myth, the dog's image is reflected by the water as well.They are "both" looking at the lights in the water. His house is inside the house of God but he cannot grasp it totally as he is watching at it through a very small miror.

@contigo121 very dramatic scene. This is what can never come true. Your HOME (where we were spiritually born, and spiritually germinated throughout years and years with our relatives that by the time might've died or some of them) has moved to another country where you think your life would be better. But having lived there for some time you started missing your motherland but still can't move back - so the only thing you're dreaming about day and night is your home here which is impossible.

So grateful you posted this scene that became very important to me in life years after viewing it.. Tarkovski confused me to tears after seeing it being in my early twenties. It reflected a dream I had earlier, about me being a 'house in a house', transparent. The Master juggles with metaphores and archetypes, in this case with Narcissus' divinity in the mirror of Self. Brilliant!!!

Non è un film facile. Sulla recitazione anche io ho qualcosa da ridire... Le cose che il regista vuole dire però ci sono. Non sempre sono messaggi. Conoscendo il suo cinema Nostalghia si colloca al posto giusto ma anche se ci sono affezionato ritengo che non sia il suo film migliore. Il cinema di Tarkovskij è rarefatto e pieno di simbolismi con roflessioni raffinate e sottili. Profondamente intriso di cultura russa. Prova a guardare Stalker (1979) il film girato prima di questo....

Forced perspective, it was actually shot in the church, the farmhouse is just a small scale model but it's made to look like it's very far away.

..questa sequenza, quando ebbi modo di vedere il film dopo la sua uscita mi suscitò già allora un misto di inquietudine e serenità...sentimenti contrastanti... il cerchio che si chiude alla fine del film ricorda molto un' altra scena che a suo tempo mi turbò non poco:l' abbraccio sulla porta di casa in Solaris seguito dalla carrellata in cui l' oceano del pianeta si rivela generatore assoluto di ricordi ed incubi....

I have always found this sequence in the film deeply haunting and moving somehow. My mother brought some prints back from Russia that show a young boy in front of a rural home with his dog in the snow...it made me think of this scene.
