To me the meaning of the fusion of these two scenarios represents a communion, Sergei is nostalgic of Russia throughout the film, but at the end when he's compelled to take the candle three times back and forth in the pool, seen as perhaps a transference of hope, he becomes inextricably tied to Italy; the songs at the beggining of the film also suggests this, a Russian(?) woman's chant fuses with the Requiem by Verdi.
I was shocked by this film after several days and as I watched it many times I began to realize that hidden in the depths of his message. (on eugenia: turns me on Italian Women)
I believe it has nothing to do with Narcissus myth, the dog's image is reflected by the water as well. They are "both" looking at the lights in the water. His house is inside the house of God but he cannot grasp it totally as he is watching at it through a very small miror.
@contigo121 very dramatic scene. This is what can never come true. Your HOME (where we were spiritually born, and spiritually germinated throughout years and years with our relatives that by the time might've died or some of them) has moved to another country where you think your life would be better. But having lived there for some time you started missing your motherland but still can't move back - so the only thing you're dreaming about day and night is your home here which is impossible.
check out the tarot card THE MOON, and contemplate not only the visual correspondence (wich is completly the same) but try to find some material on the significance of the card. It matches the film PERFECTLY.
So grateful you posted this scene that became very important to me in life years after viewing it.. Tarkovski confused me to tears after seeing it being in my early twenties. It reflected a dream I had earlier, about me being a 'house in a house', transparent. The Master juggles with metaphores and archetypes, in this case with Narcissus' divinity in the mirror of Self. Brilliant!!!
@cuallito Excellent comment! How did the man manage such a shot ? Did he use Just two still shots to animate the movement or did he really shoot it in real time?
See what todays technology could do in the right hands than in the hands of idiots who have most of the the access to it.
@RonAlmeida it was done in real time.you see it in a documentary about Tarkovsky.Thats why this is maybe the greatest special effect in cinema history.Brilliant
I'm all tears every time I see this. It's a dream, a dream, a childhood dream with the fear and the cold warmness of the world. He's a pre historical coke jurassica man. Tarkovski.
Proshai, Radost' Farewell, happiness, my very life, I hear you are leaving me. It seems that I must part with you, And never to see you again. CHORUS Dark the night is; Oh, how I long for sleep! Well I know the reason why You and only you, my dear, Come to me in every moment And taunt my mind, that knows no peace.
"i am very interested how the maestro (tarkovsky) did this technically = sinful question, therefore, professional only please! Has he build this image of home right in this location? Or filmed in higher picture-rate and copied by processing? By seeing the sequence several times, i couldn't find that out! "
Forced perspective, it was actually shot in the church, the farmhouse is just a small scale model but it's made to look like it's very far away.
Strong and powerful image; how sane and beautiful. No need to discuss; however, i am very interested how the maestro (tarkovsky) did this technically = sinful question, therefore, professional only please! Has he build this image of home right in this location? Or filmed in higher picture-rate and copied by processing? By seeing the sequence several times, i couldn't find that out!
I have always found this sequence in the film deeply haunting and moving somehow. My mother brought some prints back from Russia that show a young boy in front of a rural home with his dog in the snow...it made me think of this scene.

Прощай радость, жизнь моя,
Знаю, едешь от меня.
Знать, один должОн остаться,
Тебя мне больше не видать.
Тёмна ночь, ноченька,
Ой! да не спится.

Tarkovsky was the result of a woman having sex with a movie camera.
