so how do you safely remove the rosin from the bow. I've heard of putting it in alcohol and wiping it off with a towel or putting it in a bowl of alcohol. im just nit so sure...
I am a fairly new player and have mistakenly done exactly what you state not to do while applying rosin to a bow. I think I have caked my bow with the globs you spoke of because my violin is now producing a raspy sound, even after cleaning the strings. Is there a way to reverse this?
werent you supposed to scratch the rosin with a pointy object so that it would be easer? i'm by no means an expert but i just discovered that today, whereas mr Dave doesnt mention that. or maybe it's a special kind of rosin unlike my cheaper version:(
actually, you use to have to do that, but you don't need to do that anymore. I dont think you have had to do that for about a hundered years. its just been passed down by teachers. you can quote me but honestly im not sure how lond its been, i do know that ou no longer need to scratch it though, that im sure of.

@abbygirldelrosario yeah, but isn't dark rosin the one that produces a lot of white dust, but that's good. gives the fiddle a more traditional look

This is great, thanks -- I've got an opportunity to adopt an old fiddle and I need to learn how to care for it.

@lolturtle13 you do NOT take rosin off of the bow, especially with alcohol.
