Any concerns with attracting predators and scavengers? I believe crows do like eggs with their rotting meat. A bald eagle hanging about could do a lot of damage.
@thevegasbutterfly i previously wrote a whole long paragraph about black soldier fly, but it was over the limit, their is alot of information on the internet, don't be scared because theyre "flies" they don't even have mouths or carry diseases, you REALLY should look into it, theyre very beneficial, and the chickens love them!
LOL, i have to ask you this question sir, is it healthy for the chicken eating maggots? also, Is eating this chicken healthy for us human beings? i hope its not dangerous to feed ourselves chickens who eat dead meat maggots.
LOL, even after the banter on homesteadingtoday, com when you asked about this! im glad you chose to do it and when we finally get a place of our own im going to use this as well i added the link to your video on HT today!
@atariforever2002 This is a pretty common technique - lots of people feed their chickens this way. I regret that I didn't get footage of chickens eating the maggots.
@paulwheaton12 Oh I can understand them eatin 'em, just seemed to me that if the chickens weren't "Johnny on the spot" that the little buggers would get away! When I was a small child my mother and I would sit on the front porch in the morning swattin' flies that were sitting in the sun warming up for the day. We always seemed to have a small chick or 2 around that would run like crazy and gobble them up as they hit the floor! Quite comical! Fond memories....
@fr3d420 we actually delete discussion on politics and religion and a few other things. So it's pretty focused on homesteading and permaculture stuff.
we are all vegetarians and we have a composting bin and it only has veggie food scraps, human waste and it does well at producing meal worms and other maggots, you dont have to use "dead critters" to make chicken food.....
Very cool idea! I just adopted a small flock of chickens and can't wait to try this in the Spring. Don't know that I'll have any "dead critters" (hope I won't actually), but I see it as a great use for scraps from the kitchen. Nice to know that no flies will come of all the maggots, just another reason to love owning chickens! Thanks for the video!

What exactly is "Black Soldier Fly"?
Is it Really a Major issue in washing the eggs, Washing your hands after every contact with the chickens because of salmonella?
I new to this and we are getting ready to set up for chickens. :)

Good use of fly larva. Actually helps reduce the fly population over time. Thanks for posting it.
