  • well...it's a sci-fi book about a human who grows up with an alien species that has no genders...so when he gets back..he has no idea how to intrepret the human world around him...also the author of that book took the line from the I Ching ...the 'book of changes'...so I think there's a few ways to see the line

  • @javinmartin Cool...thank you very much

  • I love her band. It's great. Her energy, even though not in the same room, gives off great vibes. Her outfit was great, and first off I noticed her jewelry.

  • Nah, you guys gotta get Samuel & the Dragon on here for some true british talent.

  • Yeah, I actually love this woman. Proper love.

  • wow she sounds smarter than your average bear

  • Her + Florance are the best female musicians. However she tells greater stories but Florance looks better hehe ;)

  • Agreed. I prefer Bat for Lashes's style of clothing, though. But they are both totally amazing and inspiring.

  • she's so pretty

  • i love bat for lashes because it creates this sort of peaceful feeling inside me. I enjoy the music, others might not and that's fine! =D

  • OH I CAN'T HELP IT - I JUST LOVE HER.

  • She's amazing. A truly beautiful and talented musician, just lovely. :) <3

  • She is just beautiful. That's all.

  • I think she s a great musician and an artist ,she has a beautiful voice and manages to construct good catchy songs that convey a strong sense of emotion . and she writes good lyrics ,if you say thats not skillful then please what defines the level of skill to say what a great musician is? just because she s not into classical and you dont like the genre of music you cant take away the fact the she is a good at what she does.

  • Some of her music has classical influences so what are you talking about?

  • I have varied tastes actually, you assume too much. Just because I stand by classical music in this case does not mean that I despise pop music, you are simply vilifying me against a traditional archetype. I don't believe that Bat for Lashes is talented, this is a specific case - I'm not just some old man preaching 'in my day'.

  • I think you've presented yourself very well, I'm rather disgusted with the fact that so much of your argument is hidden in the spam and flooded with down ratings. It's a pity that people will decide someone is inappropriate because he doesn't agree with the idea.' ^ '

To be honest I don't think I've seen the horrible comment that began this as it was probably the one labeled too rude to be seen. You haven't shown an ounce ill manners from what I've seen though.

  • Thank you, I have tried to be considerate. It's not like I've run in saying everyone who likes this girl is an idiot, I've just been trying to get to the bottom of what people like about her. It can't be just that she is talented, because she is not among the most talented. Is it that she's passionate? I think it might be something to with her image personally but people always deny that.

  • people like you are just miserable. shut up.

  • Why? I want to get angry with you but I don't even have a hold yet, I literally don't know what to say to you. Because I disagree with you I should shut up, is that what you are saying? You know what, fuck you. How the hell could you have made an accurate judgement of me?

  • Well, believe it or not, getting laid is not an option every minute of my day. I tend to do a few other things with my day, I suppose constant sex without a moments rest sounds like a rather dull proposal to me.

  • I think she just has something in her personality from inside her that oozes out...like this positive, calming and mystic energy. It makes people want to get to know her. Obviously, she's a very beautiful woman so some may like her for her appearance, others for style inspiration...and yes, others for talent...that's just my take on it though

  • Well perhaps, but I can't help but worry that this energy you talk about is really just good marketing.

  • wait... she said my boyfriend Daniel?

  • no she said my friend Daniele

  • everything is fine, but, 0:24 that is so scary.

  • so cuteeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!

  • lol @ that manly 'woohoo'

  • love her so much

  • i like her.

  • my friend looks EXACTLY like her

  • i dont understand why anyone wouldn't like her. she's just so strange it draws me in.

  • I really like the sound of BFL

  • plus .... lol look at us we can hardly be bothered to go to a rehearsal cos were to busy getting stoned! xooxoxxoxooxx

  • lol i have no idea how i found this but hey curzmg, long time no see! seems like you got yourself a group of bat for lashes fans who want to kill you! obviously your right, except in the music industry i guess most of the hard work isnt really in the writing of the song or the musicianship but in all the press related shit, doing gigs every day, essentially being the labels little dog which most people cant handle, i guess this is why she has become recognised as a talented pop musician...

  • I assume that's you Danny! Miss you old friend. xXx

  • Listen, I don't want this thread to go on and on. I wouldn't just stand up against someone's opinion on youtube, I'm all for discussion. You clearly weren't discussing or inquiring, but merely lashing out that anyone liking her was ridiculous for all the reasons you listed before, defining good music. I have nothing against you, I simply wanted to point out that the way you expressed yourself came off very narrow-minded. Anyway we made this bigger than it really is, so for that I apologize.

  • Well no, I think it is fun, I don't want to 'win' - I know I can't. I think it is as narrow minded to assume that art is subjective. This idea that art is subjective is extremely recent, you must understand that. Perhaps it began at the dawn of democracy, which would make sense. I think that art should neither be objective nor subjective but a fine balance between the two. I think it should be the 'passion' I showed contempt for and the technicality that I admire.

  • "i think you may find my taste is probably broader than your own" if you only read what I wrote, you would note that it is not your taste but rather the form in which you comment that I criticize. And if youre afraid of clichés, well I am not... I still think too many people on youtube have this disdainful air to them (quite like yourself) in the way they present their opinion. as for readers on my side, wake up to the fact you were being unpleasant and many people reprimanded you before me.

  • I do not think that is particularly fair - I have not once dropped to personal insults (as you have) - I made my point and I explained it to anyone who asked. I didn't mindlessly criticise her, I only wanted a response from a fan detailing why they believed she deserved what she has; I have received many interesting responses. I dislike this antagonism towards discussion on Youtube, complete distrust. As for disdain, that is fair, you must understand I do not categorically believe in all I say.

  • If you knew me you would know that most of what I say is with a smile and a wink. I know I took a fairly hard line against her but it was extremely difficult for me to judge her seriously. The whole video is just full of branding and contrived personality (not her fault yet she acquiesced). I find it hard to recieve art in which I feel the artist has authority over my interpretation. This should only be the case through the piece itself. So forgive me, I was cruel, but it was not without reason.

  • Just thought I should tell you, she dosen't manipulate or edit the video in anyway. it's actually Nylon TV who shows her in a certain way. they could try and show her as a bitch if they wanted.

  • well, I like her because she seems genuine in her song writing and what she says, and her style, and that she is not just adopting a style to suit her or following a style, that she is merely wearing and doing what she wants.

I find it hard not to like her because she seems so free, kooky and at peace with herself.

  • You make this distinction between a "pop musician" and someone who has studied music all their lives and isn't rewarded for it. For the record, Natasha Khan has a degree in music and visual arts. She has incredible vocal skill and range, and has struck upon a cohesive and genuine image/motif to propel her sound and musical talent to a wide audience.

  • She expresses this pure love of the music and pop culture of her childhood in her art in a way that makes her instantly relatable to anyone who grew up in the same era, and simply for the joy that her music and imagery evoke, she "deserves" love and admiration.

  • Seeing her live is one of the best ways to be assured of her talents and deservability with regards to praise. She has an utterly mesmerising stage presence, is completely gracious, and demonstrates a very close to flawless execution of her craft.

  • Her music may not be uber-technically complex, but it's quite well-crafted with its layering, and primal and sometimes intricate rhythms, and other times with just its bareness. She's able to wrap an entire club full of people around her finger, and the vibe of everyone after the show is AMAZING, like everyone's walking on air. She had a hand in the production of her records and for the most part Bat for Lashes is HER music. She deserves her time in the sun, because she's a magical performer.

  • That is fine, I do not debate that she may be an exciting performer - good to go out with your mates and have a drink or two. However she is not an artist and she will never be remembered as a great musician. Her art will not be remembered for generations to come. Her music video has 3,203,413 views; this video watch?v=L5C99JyP2ns of one of the most moving performances of all time has only 627,972 - I don't believe this is fair. xXx

  • I wouldn't go so far as to say "she is not an artist". She expresses herself through sound and image in a way that captivates and interests people. That is a bare definition of an artist. She crafts her own music, she gathers together a group of musicians to help express her personal vision and imagination. I wholly agree that she will not be remembered as a "great" musician, I don't think anyone could rightfully say here and now that she's a "great" musician.

  • Of course she's no Jacqueline Du Pre (who i would agree is understatedly amazing!). She is a musician, nonetheless. She plays the piano with some skill, and assorted other instruments, and can put together beats in an artful way. I think that bitching about classical musicians not getting as much attention as pop artists is ultimately futile. Of course it's not freaking fair. You can keep crying about it, but it's probably not ever going to change.

  • Classical music simply has a major public relations problem. It doesn't provide the same scope for becoming an outlet for people's fantasies and providing objects of identification, which is why the numbers of its devotees will never reach pop standards. Natasha might not be a "great" musician, but she's a good enough one to hit upon certain turns of melodies that grab people's hearts and fire up their imaginations.

  • It does but it didn't always. Pop music hasn't always attracted undeserved attention and classical music hasn't always gone unappreciated. I'm not saying Bat for Lashes deserves nothing, I am truly saying the Du Pre deserves more. It is not that Classical music cannot become an outlet for what you have described, if anything I believe it positively should, it is just that people do not know the characters. xXx

  • Every classical musician has a diploma, a diploma is simply a starting point - you need a diploma. Only 1% of people who get diplomas are good enough to play in public and only 1% of these will ever be remembered. watch?v=IzTpFQ6gSe8 it takes much more than this video shows. xXx

  • and I bet you only 1% of famous musicians graduated with a musical diploma....

  • Maybe less, what's your point?

  • you just proved my point...

  • So what you are saying is that fame is equal to ability? My comment on musical diplomas was saying entirely the opposite to what you are implying. I think my comment quite obviously implied that a diploma is useless.

  • if you dont like the girl and her music just say you dont like her, it doesnt really impress your ear thats all.

theres freedom of speech and then theres bad faith which is just unpleasant and leaves everyone unimpressed.

  • Oh and please drop 'get over your high school punk nose flare,' your position is becoming more of a cliche than my own. It is also a rhetorical and irritating way to get readers on your side, like saying 'I'm one of the people, this man is against you, do not attempt to gain one positive thing from this man, he has criticised you music.' If you like, criticise my own music - I think you may find my taste is probably broader than your own. xXx

  • The visceral response is all you need sometimes to enjoy a certain music. Youre being ridiculous and little by underestimating that general rule of aesthetics. Unless youre telling me you only enjoy bands with astronomical complexity of composition and musical structure, get over your high school punk nose flare critique trip because we've all heard the "good music" speech more than once.

  • It is your opinion that music is visceral, I do not believe that it should be. I do not respect, and I will not pay at the expense of others who are dying, a person who accidentally stumbles on something mildly catchy and emotive. The world class pianist will make not a touch on a pop musician yet they will study music from the age of 2-3 and practice up to 8 hours a day and then have all the concert commitments of a pop musician with a far more cynical audience. This is unfair. xXx

  • I don't understand your whole deal with the "hard work" argument. Perhaps you dont know how the music industry works, but even if she hadn't written & composed a single song, which she has - there is more than one's share of hard work involved. Plus, as if all that werent enough, the mere concept of how much work was put into the music is irrelevant to the response that the music gets, because music is visceral.

  • Putting aside Hendrix for a minute, and giving this woman a fair chance like any other.... what is wrong with the music? straightforward question... It sounds to me like she juiced out her influences as mentioned (Dead Can Dance, Kate Bush, etc) and the interview gives scope on her creative drive backing up the album and its creation.

  • I love this lady to death, but jeez... can she say "like" enough times in one sentence? D:

    Like... like... LIKE LIKE. :x

  • i love her, really, i love her, and her voice i duno what it is but this woman gets it, she understands so much many people dont.

  • I want Bat for Lashes and Patrick Wolf to have a baby called Augustine.

  • NICE EYES, lets hump!

  • Either of them, sorry I've forgotten the post, who are they? When did criticism become pretence? I don't believe this woman's fame and success is equal to her talent for reasons I have described. There is a new wave of music which really kicked off in the 80's, this notion that anyone can simply pick up a guitar and make music. Now this new group rates each other because they have never heard a truly talented musician.

  • all of her ex boyfriends must be kicking themselves

  • Never actually got together with her but we used hang out in the Brighton Uni days. I'm really pleased for Tash, she's a top girl, got bags of talent and deserves all the success and admiration she gets!! hehe just to think of the days sitting at the piano with her and now she's a mega star, its a funny ol' life . . .

  • aw that's so cute! I wish I was you. she's such a wonderful girl. :))

  • so daniel is a friend!

    daniel is my love song.

  • yeaa im in love too

  • she talk about a group called dead can dance that is similar to the cure and wich other band, Does anybody knows wich band that is?

  • Cocteau Twins

  • Thanks

  • yep, it's the Cocteau Twins. :)

  • Gang Gang Dance

  • She's like great but like she like says like like a lot like. Also sometimes she looks a bit 'local' (as in TLOG).

  • I want to be friends with Natasha Khan!! :O

  • It is if you are a listener but not if you are a composer. If you are a composer it is about considering how theory and technicality effects the soul - how the construction of your piece will take your listener on a journey through emotions which you pick. A good composer knows how to get across very specific emotions; a good composer doesn't make you react by accident. A good composer can rely on more than just minor chords to make you sad. xXx

  • oh aye, fair enough then

  • curzmg, you're being very narrow-minded. are you arguing that say african tribal music or ambient music are 'bad' because they have no theory/technicality backing them up? i am afraid that contrary to your thinking, music is much more than theory and technicality. and yes, anyone can grab a guitar and make music, that's the beauty of it. jimi hendrix grabbed a guitar and played it. he didn't have any sort of classical music education. are you saying he's a 'bad' musician?

  • I am, I'm sorry but that is just the way I view it. No, I feel it is a fine balance between technicality and spirituality; besides African music is extremely technical rhythmically. Anyone can grab a guitar but then they must learn to use it - this view that Hendrix just sort of rocked up and 'jammed' is simply a lie, he had an incredible though not a traditional technical ability. So no Hendrix was brilliant technically, that is fairly obvious. This woman does not have Hendrix's skill. xXx

  • i never said jimi hendrix became great in a day, what he did was he picked up a guitar and started playing, that's it. with time he got better. he is NOT brilliant technically, he's great, but MANY have surpassed him. However, he is brilliant spiritually. this woman doesn't have jimi's skill, but she still has passion for music and i doubt that her music has no value. music strikes people for different reasons, even when the fine balance between technicality and spirituality is missing.

  • But he didn't 'pick up a guitar and start playing' in the idiomatic sense. He spent hours of his time practicing and learning, he demonstrated his 'passion' by hard work - we can all claim to have 'passion' but who comes through with the goods is the man who works hard for it. Are you saying that this woman has more passion than you or I, and that on this basis she deserves her fame? She has no more passion than myself and from the looks of it no more ability thus she is not ready for praise. X

  • wow, way to go. of course you know this woman in person and exactly how much passion she has compared to how much passion you have, etc. sorry to be mean, but that's bullcrap. she does have passion if she has made music that many people buy, download, listen to, love, etc. if so many people can connect to your music, then you have succeed as a musician. she is an artiste who's mostly praised for her music, rather than her image, sex appeal, etc. that justifies her as a successful musician.

  • Oh sorry and you have? I'm sure she has a great passion for music but so do millions of others. Let's say hypothetically that she is the 50th most acclaimed musician this year, are you then saying that she has the 50th greatest passion for music out of the 6 billion and whatever people that live on this planet? Are you saying she is the 50th most technically gifted? Are you saying the 50th most spiritual? She is none of these things and so should not be the 50th most acclaimed - undeserved. xXx

  • i think you need to stop measuring passion and i never even suggested that her 'passion rank' would be based on how acclaimed she is. she is appreciated for her music, thus it is deserved. if any of those millions of people with great passion for music happened to become popular and get praise for their music, then they deserved it too.

  • whether you like one musician over another is your opinion, just don't try to justify that good music is only good when it's derived from classical theory, instrument mastery, etc. because that's not all that matters.

  • lol.. i know this is a reply but how on earth did hendrix pop up in this thread? :D

  • I found out about her because I'm a huge fan of both Stevie Nicks and Kate Bush!

She's right up there now. I love love love this woman! <3

  • I know you've only just released Two Suns but Natasha - I need more!

    Create more music. ASAP

  • she has also released the "Fur and gold" album
