When you're recording in 4-channel mode, how did you get your condenser mic and your drum machine to come through both speakers? Since they are plugged into the left and right channels of stereo track 2, I would expect that the sound for the vocals and the sound of the drum machine would come out of separate speakers. Were these sound files mixed down to a mono file in post?
as i got one today i can answer. it has an option for '1/2 link' and another option for 'mono mix' (which you need the link enabled to do). im not sure if he mentioned the built in lo cut (from 80-237 hz) great for field recording. i would also have to say this menu is amazingly user friendly, i almost wish it was more complicated so i can look smarter for using it. he should have shown the 120* image completely
@omnesilere I own a Zoom H4n as well. I know it has a 1/2 link which allows you to independently control the track levels. However, the 'mono mix' function only shows up under stereo mode, and not under the '4-channel' mode. As a result, if you are recording three sources at once (the built-in mic, a condenser mic, and a drum machine), you would have sound on both the left and right channels from the built-in mic, but not for the condenser mic and drum machine.
a very informative video.. its nice to see someone actually take the bother to go through some of the more advance functions and play back the results. Well done and thanks.
Useless piece of crap. Preamps are too weak and too noisy for using with an external dynamic mic which is what most reporters etc. will use. Hence, the usefulness of the unit is questionable. Go ahead and downvote me if you own "this guy", that's what most people do to rationalize the fact that they're bought a sub-standard product. But I'm still right.
@TheMichaelJoshua If u want to do radio interviews, I'd go for a Yellowtec IXM. It's a better version of the HHB Flashmic (which is great 2, but the Yellowtec has interchangeable heads etc.) If you're looking for a tape recorder you run in2 problems if you go cheap. High noise, handling noise, crappy build etc. The best option there that’s still fiarly cheap, is a Marantz PMD661 with an oade dot com mod. That'll give you great sound and low noise for a low price. Oh, and get a real windsock.
thanks for the video mate! i'm looking at getting one of these for recording an audio book, so it needs to be practically noiseless in the background. It sounds really quiet until you plug in your ribbon mic. Is that just because it takes allot of gain to get it going, or are external mics always gona have white noise?
Sorry Eniyi04 I won't be able to post audio of the recording. It was for a client who probably wouldn't appreciate me broadcasting their work. I posted my comment as an example of the possibilities of the device.
I own one of these & recently did a 4 track recording of stereo electronic piano and 2 external mics (Vocal & Guitar). The piano went into the internal mic input on the back - it needed padding down but worked fine. I then mixed the 4 tracks in a DAW. I was really happy with the result, you can do a lot with this recorder. Highly recommend it for any simple recording task. The internal mics will handle high SPL without breaking up
@TheNorthernExposure They are just plain Wav or Mp3 files on a memory card, so yes. You can drag the samples straight into whatever DAW you're using. I recently bought this thing, and it's extremely easy to use, and the mics are really really good.
Respnd to this video... Can you use a phantom powered stereo mike like the old AT825 or the new AT8022? Or are the XLR connecters not close enough. I'm not sure how far appart the XLR ends on the cables for those mikes are. Thanks for your help.
ok, so i took the SD card out of the h4n & put it in my Korg M50. I recorded a song, saved it properly on the card using my korg seq. etc..& now I put the SD card back in the h4n.... How do i get that file to playback on the h4n?? I'm new to it... any help would be ap[preciated thanx!
@CyrilAndPriscilla you use a system called pluraleyes if you use final cut, or you use another program from the makers of pluraleyes (I forgot the name) to sync the audio.
Great video. I bought one of these recently and this helped me make up my mind. I am now looking for an external microphone to use with it. I am thinking about getting the AKG Perception 120, an electret that is billed as a condenser. The mic he is using sounds great to me. He says it is a ribbon mic. Probably out of my price range, but does anyone know what it is? I am very happy with the Zoom H4n btw.

Thanks Owen, and great presentation!
Fantastic. I was looking into this mic for recording concerts at local venues with my T2i DSLR. I was wondering if it has the capability of being run into a camera as an external mic. If so, would it still have the same audio quality?

Hi there, thanx a lot for this presentation! As I would like to purchase this tool also as an audio-interface (voice and e-guitars into PC/Mac). Can you recommend buying this Zoom H4n for this purpose?
Hi I'm Tom fron Chicopee Paranormal, I just got the Zoom H4N and I will be trying to capture EVPs with it. If I capture anything I will post it on my channel.
do you have to plug your guitar/bass in for the effects to work or can they work unplugged through the built in mics? thnks in advance for any help :)
was very interested in this device and after ur demo/review i'm even more excited about buying this and a portable recording solution. anyways keep it up and will be following ur channel now
So how much post editing did you do to achieve your results. Just opened my new h4n today, and have a hiss on every recording done from the internal mics. Have tried usb, a/c, and battery. Still there on all three. Anyone who has one, I would want to know if it is a common "hiss" or is my defective. Thanks.
@sevensamuraix : What have you done to fix that in settings. Or do you just fix it in post audio production? In all the reviews and samples I listened to, I never heard any "hiss." Not very accurate representation if you ask me.
how did you get the vox and drum machine to be in both channels ? when i tried to do that i had drums right and vox left . according to the owners manual you can't make a mono mix of ext channels 1 and 2 . it sure sounded like owen's vocals and the drum machine were sharing the same sonic space to me .... what i'm trying to say is the vox and drum machine were in both channels ...i tried for hours to do that and "it just wasn't happinin" anyone know why???
Thank you for this demo. I just ordered one for field recording for video projects. I've never owned a recorder but I'm glad I read the user's manual beforehand. Lots of stuff to understand.
I got one a while ago ... and I am still enjoying it a lot.
The only thing I am sad about it is that when used as a USB audio interface, it is damn noisy.
I have tested on 4 different computers, with lots of different USB cables and combinations. Either with battery or power adapter. Nothing seems to get me rid of a "ziiinng" digital background noise.
Even with no instrument plugged to it, if I run it thru any virtual guitar effect with a high gain distortion: ZAEEENG!!! .. anyone help, pls?
i had a similar problems using it as a usb interface and discovered the noise was greatly reduced by in my case using a usb extension cable and keeping the device a couple of feet away from the mac and anything else with a metallic surface and especially away from the monitor - took an hour or so's messing about but now it's sorted - hope you find a similar solution!
Many thanks without this video it would have taken me a lot longer to get results. The H4n is a great recorder and it's a shame that the manual is written cryptic. Great work.
this and that guy...

Hi there, thanx a lot for this presentation! As I would like to purchase this tool also as an audio-interface (voice and e-guitars into PC/Mac). Can you recommend buying this Zoom H4n for this purpose?
Thanks in advance,
Alex (adruiter@hotmail.com)

The audio of this video seems low. Was that because you recorded it low?

great review! Loved the Thom Yorke choice for your example. ; )
Question: Once you record something, say a guitar. Can you overlay something, say vocals, on another track??? If yes, than I'm sold!!!

Hi,
What SD Card works best with the Zoom H4n?
Is the SanDisk Extreme the best way to go?
Thanks!

So how much post editing did you do to achieve your results. Just opened my new h4n today, and have a hiss on every recording done from the internal mics. Have tried usb, a/c, and battery. Still there on all three. Anyone who has one, I would want to know if it is a common "hiss" or is my defective. Thanks.

yeah the one i use has a hiss as well
sevensamuraix 1 year ago
@sevensamuraix : What have you done to fix that in settings. Or do you just fix it in post audio production? In all the reviews and samples I listened to, I never heard any "hiss." Not very accurate representation if you ask me.

It looks great - but is it possible to use the files in windows movie maker to make audio & visual posts for youtube?

how did you get the vox and drum machine to be in both channels ? when i tried to do that i had drums right and vox left . according to the owners manual you can't make a mono mix of ext channels 1 and 2 . it sure sounded like owen's vocals and the drum machine were sharing the same sonic space to me .... what i'm trying to say is the vox and drum machine were in both channels ...i tried for hours to do that and "it just wasn't happinin" anyone know why???

Not sure I'm completely clear on your Q but if you record in MTR mode you should be able to have each instrument isolated on its own mono track.

Even with no instrument plugged to it, if I run it thru any virtual guitar effect with a high gain distortion: ZAEEENG!!! .. anyone help, pls?
zer0warn 2 years ago
Hi... have you got any answers on these points?
oshoaska 1 year ago
i had a similar problems using it as a usb interface and discovered the noise was greatly reduced by in my case using a usb extension cable and keeping the device a couple of feet away from the mac and anything else with a metallic surface and especially away from the monitor - took an hour or so's messing about but now it's sorted - hope you find a similar solution!

Many thanks without this video it would have taken me a lot longer to get results. The H4n is a great recorder and it's a shame that the manual is written cryptic. Great work.
