  • this and that guy...

  • You sound good man---how much does a h4n cost?

  • Super!

  • I put the SD card into the h4n and then the thing says "Card Protected" what do I have to do to fix this?

  • @myskull54 Should be a little switch on the side of the card just slide it along and it should move it out of protected mode !!

  • @bevanmcg thanks man

  • @bevanmcg I encountered another problem with the H4n, when I go to menu the tool function keeps on disapearing and it's really frustrating

  • @myskull54 sorry dude I don't actually have one of these things - else I could help you out - ought to be someone one here who can help though : )

  • @bevanmcg thanks man, I'll just play with the click track on cubase for now \m/

  • @bevanmcg and feel free to send me a friend invite \m/

  • When you're recording in 4-channel mode, how did you get your condenser mic and your drum machine to come through both speakers? Since they are plugged into the left and right channels of stereo track 2, I would expect that the sound for the vocals and the sound of the drum machine would come out of separate speakers. Were these sound files mixed down to a mono file in post?

  • @CinemaCaptureFilms Hey glad to see someones thinking : )

as i got one today i can answer. it has an option for '1/2 link' and another option for 'mono mix' (which you need the link enabled to do). im not sure if he mentioned the built in lo cut (from 80-237 hz) great for field recording. i would also have to say this menu is amazingly user friendly, i almost wish it was more complicated so i can look smarter for using it. he should have shown the 120* image completely

  • @omnesilere I own a Zoom H4n as well. I know it has a 1/2 link which allows you to independently control the track levels. However, the 'mono mix' function only shows up under stereo mode, and not under the '4-channel' mode. As a result, if you are recording three sources at once (the built-in mic, a condenser mic, and a drum machine), you would have sound on both the left and right channels from the built-in mic, but not for the condenser mic and drum machine.

  • would drums be recorded nice on them?

  • Excellent video. It's a bit hard to judge the sound via a YouTube upload, but I guess there's not much that can be done about that.

  • I like your videos! They are very informative and interesting at the same time. Thank you!

  • thumbs up for 4ch clipping audio

  • Your so sexist "this guy" .. Kidding this looks awsome

  • The old zoom thing looks like something out of star wars...

  • @lauratdrummer Looks dangerous, doesn't it? People get nervous when they see it.

  • Great video. I'm using the H4N for my podcast. How do you hook it up to a mixer?

  • a very informative video.. its nice to see someone actually take the bother to go through some of the more advance functions and play back the results. Well done and thanks.

  • can you plugin a power supply and recoard at the sametime???

  • @kk6downing *record*

  • If you say "uh" or "um" one more time, I will find you and kill you.

    Just kidding.

    Sort of.

  • It reminds me of a beating heart.

    o.O

  • Can you record into the four tracks separately consecutively as apposed to simultaneously?

  • Why not just carry extra batteries (and switch them out at the 50% point)? And have you tested those new rechargeable Duracell batteries?

  • Awesome, thanks for sharing!

  • Useless piece of crap. Preamps are too weak and too noisy for using with an external dynamic mic which is what most reporters etc. will use. Hence, the usefulness of the unit is questionable. Go ahead and downvote me if you own "this guy", that's what most people do to rationalize the fact that they're bought a sub-standard product. But I'm still right.

  • @mandolinroad What product do you think is better? I need a good field recorder and I agree with you. This is a very amateurish product.

  • @TheMichaelJoshua If u want to do radio interviews, I'd go for a Yellowtec IXM. It's a better version of the HHB Flashmic (which is great 2, but the Yellowtec has interchangeable heads etc.) If you're looking for a tape recorder you run in2 problems if you go cheap. High noise, handling noise, crappy build etc. The best option there that’s still fiarly cheap, is a Marantz PMD661 with an oade dot com mod. That'll give you great sound and low noise for a low price. Oh, and get a real windsock.

  • Thanks for this, it's been a great help, now I know which recorder to spend my money on.

    Kind regards Johnnie Lawson

  • You're good!

  • Sweet tom fill!

  • How is this device for ghost hunting?

Will it detect their resonant frequency? I mainly track spirits/orbs, any general paranormal activity .

  • @DackIsBack Dude Seriously?

  • @DackIsBack Only if they produce accoustic signals.

  • thanks for the video mate! i'm looking at getting one of these for recording an audio book, so it needs to be practically noiseless in the background. It sounds really quiet until you plug in your ribbon mic. Is that just because it takes allot of gain to get it going, or are external mics always gona have white noise?

    Thanks in advance :)

  • Sorry Eniyi04 I won't be able to post audio of the recording. It was for a client who probably wouldn't appreciate me broadcasting their work. I posted my comment as an example of the possibilities of the device.

  • Set light on on next time. Great review!!

  • Very informative video!

  • stop calling everything 'guy' you twat

  • I own one of these & recently did a 4 track recording of stereo electronic piano and 2 external mics (Vocal & Guitar). The piano went into the internal mic input on the back - it needed padding down but worked fine. I then mixed the 4 tracks in a DAW. I was really happy with the result, you can do a lot with this recorder. Highly recommend it for any simple recording task. The internal mics will handle high SPL without breaking up

  • @reverendgroove can you post the finished track?

  • I have no idea half of what's being said :[. Need to learn my abc's of audio tech

  • definitely not an omnidirectional mic hahahaha

  • will it transfer files straight into Pro Tools?

  • @TheNorthernExposure They are just plain Wav or Mp3 files on a memory card, so yes. You can drag the samples straight into whatever DAW you're using. I recently bought this thing, and it's extremely easy to use, and the mics are really really good.

  • excellent review!!!

  • I didn't liked 4 channel because of noise it was getting =) i think it's cause of vocal mic

  • GREAT REVIEW and a Bonus Song--WOW. Thanks for taking the time to go over this Mic. Don't stop doing what you are doing!

    take care OWEN O RULES!

  • CAN YOU PLUG IT DIRECTLY INTO A VIDEO CAMERA

  • @rufusvanrugburn Yes. I've seen a review on a Canon Camera plugged to it.

  • wow not ony great review but I really liked your singing. That was amazing how you were able to record that so easily with one take on the H4n.

  • GREAT REVIEW

  • Great video!

Researching Tascam DR-100 v. Zoom H4n just like everyone else, and this was the best resource I've seen so far. Thanks for the review!

    p.s. Sweet tom fill.

  • I was considering buying Roland Edirol R09 or Zoom H4n, but now I have decided for the last one.

  • The man is a studio! Thanks for the review.

  • Respnd to this video... Can you use a phantom powered stereo mike like the old AT825 or the new AT8022? Or are the XLR connecters not close enough. I'm not sure how far appart the XLR ends on the cables for those mikes are. Thanks for your help.

  • has a built-in compressor? no cliping? no distorsion?

  • The Best!! Thank you, Man.

    Very good review.

  • Ha ha ha... best review ever... WAY WAY WAY better than the manufacturer review. YOU DA MAN ;)

  • This is the best review ever.

  • ok, so i took the SD card out of the h4n & put it in my Korg M50. I recorded a song, saved it properly on the card using my korg seq. etc..& now I put the SD card back in the h4n.... How do i get that file to playback on the h4n?? I'm new to it... any help would be ap[preciated thanx!

  • Was the drummachine input with a normal Line-cable?

  • YOU ARE AWESOME MAN! brilliant and informative video\

  • @memestudiosj1 "AWESOME"....What a twit! That word was out of style 20 years ago. What a mindlessness.

  • @rrk137 twit? cuz that word is still in style. you're a fucking tool

  • Seriously though, uh... this is uh... a great uh review and uh well done... I uh think I may pick this one up.... uh.

  • uh uh uh therefor uh, and uh uh, it uh uh uh is nice uh... and uh uhhhh uh.

  • Hey .. how much does an "vocal Mic " like yours cost ?! And what is the name of yours?!

  • looks amazing

  • How does he sync the audio with the video, and what is he recording the video with?

  • @CyrilAndPriscilla you use a system called pluraleyes if you use final cut, or you use another program from the makers of pluraleyes (I forgot the name) to sync the audio.

  • man, i really need one of these.

  • i'v got the h2 and its so great

    but this one is wo0o0ow

  • What is the Drum Machine (Groove Box) model?

    thanks a lot

    bye.

  • Great video. I bought one of these recently and this helped me make up my mind. I am now looking for an external microphone to use with it. I am thinking about getting the AKG Perception 120, an electret that is billed as a condenser. The mic he is using sounds great to me. He says it is a ribbon mic. Probably out of my price range, but does anyone know what it is? I am very happy with the Zoom H4n btw.

  • "This is the only one that records [on] four channels, though." That is a HUGE statement. Aside from the expensive and HUGE Edirol R4 family, we have not had this feature. O Why Was I Born Too Early? Goodbye DAT, we hardly knew ye.

  • So it's probably the best there is? Is it?

  • Can anyone tell me which shock mount he is using?

  • yo man i recorded a track, than copied it so that i could move it to another project and when i did it would'nt play on the other project. what do i do??

  • is it me or is this guy doubting dave from mystery hunters?

  • Radiohead!! Nice :)

  • transcribe captions call it an "ex-wife stereo pattern" lmao

  • I would love to see someone record drums using the zoom h4n. I want to try using the onboard electret mic's as the overheads and then input one for a snare drum and input 2 for a kick drum. I

  • @lilmrdr That's it tinfoil hats on now!!! STOP READING MY MIND!

  • wtf is he on drugs

  • I was thinking does it plug into a laptop then i was like... wait a sec.

  • @ChristieDeJong1 so does it???

  • can i use this in music production?

  • Just got one yesterday, thankyou for the info.

    Love that song

"people like crushed like biscuitt crumbs" made me laugh.

  • I just bought it last week.

Thanks for the info. Love it !!

  • greatly explained... thanks

  • how can you achieve complete silence when not talking there always is a humming noise when i'm recording even though the lo cut filters and znrs are turned on please help me. Is my room a factor too?

  • @leugimigop Computers, room noise, room reverb etc are all a factor

  • What stand & shock mount did you use with the H4N in this vid?

  • I own one of these amazing devices! I am a freelance videographer and it is possibly the most important piece of equipment I have next to the camera. I can use it along with the camera sound to create stunning audio tracks! Compact and portable, and it fits in a mic stand! This Gearwire vid was the clencher. Do yourself a favor and spend the $250. Thanks Owen, and great presentation!

  • could this be the best hand recording for powerfull rocking and cosmic bluesing jam sessions?

  • I own one of these. Brand new on ebay for 225 (best offer). It's awesome.

  • Thom Yorke!! Nice choice. Very good review, I'll probably upgrade from the H2!

  • You are cool man. Thank you for your explanation.

What is your opinion: buy H4n or buy Tascam DP-008 + shure SM57 mic?

  • Nice review! :-) Thanks.

ps. There is a Zoom H4 "key hold" function. Just press end hold for a few second the "Menu Key". See H4 user guide, page 79.

  • I just posted a tutorial on how to dump your projects and tracks from the Zoom H4N to the computer using the Audacity freeware program.

I hope it will be useful to many beginners and pro users.

  • great reviewer 10/10...makes me wanne buy one!

  • i want one sooo bad... i used one of these bad boys for some field recording for a class... they're so much fun and have great sound quality

  • This is Jimmy Kimmel : College Years

  • Great review, Owen! Thank you.

  • Thats a great review. Thanks. Makes me wish to buy it.

  • yeeeeah, i got this and its fantastic.

  • Really good job presenting Owen!

    Super helpful demo.

  • It's really great and helpful thanks! I order mine today...I'll trying to fumble around with it this week.

  • hah! i have the exact same guitar:3

  • Devil horns are hilarious!

  • Just got my H4n! Going through the manual all week so I look like an expert when I use it on set. :)

  • Fantastic. I was looking into this mic for recording concerts at local venues with my T2i DSLR. I was wondering if it has the capability of being run into a camera as an external mic. If so, would it still have the same audio quality?

I came across your video, and had to ask, because essentially it seems like you are doing what I would like to do. This is assuming you are recording with a camera and your main mic is the Zoom H4N (during the first half of the video).

    Please respond, thank you

  • is possible to record 4 tracks separately in 4 channels with only xlr/trs jacks? need this information!!

  • I just purchased this device. I am very excited about it.

  • I tend not to trust "audio experts" who don't know how to mic a simple subject for a basic video. C'mon guys, an audio gear review site is the LAST place that should have shitty audio. So much for taking these guys seriously.

  • @UnitedNutmeg are u saying that this zoom device isn't good?

  • @Style3232 Actually, I LOVE mine. It lives in my backpack and goes where I do. If I can't bust out my serious portable rig (TASCAM FR2LE + WENDT X$ MIXER), I bust out the Zoom.

  • @UnitedNutmeg

is possible to record 4 tracks separately in 4 channels with only xlr/trs jacks? need this information!!

  • There are only two xlr/trs inputs, so you can only do 2 external mics at once. The other two tracks come from the built in mics.

  • @UnitedNutmeg i mean...can i record all with imputs xlr/trs also not in the same time but in the same project?

  • @Style3232 I don't know the answer to that. I just use it two tracks at a time. Why don't you just go to the Zoom website and download the manual or call them?

  • thanks so much. I have one arriving tomorrow- SO excited!

  • please dont take me wrong, just got one,but ppl who have all kinds of equipment like this guy, why would they need THAT to record?haha this is for not wanting to be at home doing this stuff to me,be honest its for ppl to be able to kinda have same benefits as rich ppl,(if they spend alil more on a few more instruments

  • Black Swan! <3

  • Great ......

  • Great......

  • Hi I'm Tom fron Chicopee Paranormal, I just got the Zoom H4N and I will be trying to capture EVPs with it. If I capture anything I will post it on my channel.

  • nice tut , thanks

  • Fantastic review. It is refreshing to get all the info you need, and be able to hear you clearly. Thanks much!

  • how do you record in mono with this equipment?.

  • Excellent video, really well explained - going to get one I think. Thank you.

  • HI, WHAT IS THE SR 17? AN AUDIO MIXER? WHAT BRAND? PLEASE LET ME KNOW, WE LIKE IT WITH THE zoom MIC.

  • thanks awesome review thanks

  • Haha Thom Yorke. Nice. Good review. Very informative. I think I might go buy one of those babies!

  • do you have to plug your guitar/bass in for the effects to work or can they work unplugged through the built in mics? thnks in advance for any help :)

  • The audio of this video seems low. Was that because you recorded it low?

  • very good~!

  • damnnnnnnnn its unbelievable!

  • just ordered it. arrives tomorrow. i'll make a review soon.

  • great review! Loved the Thom Yorke choice for your example. ; )

Question: Once you record something, say a guitar. Can you overlay something, say vocals, on another track??? If yes, than I'm sold!!!

  • Nice review. Gets straight to the point :D

  • was very interested in this device and after ur demo/review i'm even more excited about buying this and a portable recording solution. anyways keep it up and will be following ur channel now

  • Thaaaaaaanks, a lot!!!

    greetings from Argentina.

  • Just what i need, seems complicated but I'm sure it's not.

Thanks to Lou for the heads up on this Studio in a Pocket.

  • Hi,

What SD Card works best with the Zoom H4n?

Is the SanDisk Extreme the best way to go?

    Thanks!

  • @synthpopfan yes

  • great review, just ordered it :)

  • "this guy" lol!

  • So how much post editing did you do to achieve your results. Just opened my new h4n today, and have a hiss on every recording done from the internal mics. Have tried usb, a/c, and battery. Still there on all three. Anyone who has one, I would want to know if it is a common "hiss" or is my defective. Thanks.

    Brian

  • yeah the one i use has a hiss as well

  • @sevensamuraix : What have you done to fix that in settings. Or do you just fix it in post audio production? In all the reviews and samples I listened to, I never heard any "hiss." Not very accurate representation if you ask me.

  • It looks great - but is it possible to use the files in windows movie maker to make audio & visual posts for youtube?

  • @key2kingdom yes

  • I too am wondering about your shockmount. I'm looking for one that will working on a boom.

  • Great vid! What's the model of the shockmount you are using?

  • how did you get the vox and drum machine to be in both channels ? when i tried to do that i had drums right and vox left . according to the owners manual you can't make a mono mix of ext channels 1 and 2 . it sure sounded like owen's vocals and the drum machine were sharing the same sonic space to me .... what i'm trying to say is the vox and drum machine were in both channels ...i tried for hours to do that and "it just wasn't happinin" anyone know why???

  • Not sure I'm completely clear on your Q but if you record in MTR mode you should be able to have each instrument isolated on its own mono track.

  • Excellent presentation! Thank you! I wish you would join the Clout Meisters! You might be too talented. Nice Guitar, Thank You.

  • Thank you for this demo. I just ordered one for field recording for video projects. I've never owned a recorder but I'm glad I read the user's manual beforehand. Lots of stuff to understand.

  • I got one a while ago ... and I am still enjoying it a lot.

The only thing I am sad about it is that when used as a USB audio interface, it is damn noisy.

I have tested on 4 different computers, with lots of different USB cables and combinations. Either with battery or power adapter. Nothing seems to get me rid of a "ziiinng" digital background noise.

Even with no instrument plugged to it, if I run it thru any virtual guitar effect with a high gain distortion: ZAEEENG!!! .. anyone help, pls?

  • Hi... have you got any answers on these points?

  • i had a similar problems using it as a usb interface and discovered the noise was greatly reduced by in my case using a usb extension cable and keeping the device a couple of feet away from the mac and anything else with a metallic surface and especially away from the monitor - took an hour or so's messing about but now it's sorted - hope you find a similar solution!

  • Many thanks without this video it would have taken me a lot longer to get results. The H4n is a great recorder and it's a shame that the manual is written cryptic. Great work.

  • Thanks for such a detailed and accurate review! Took me a few weeks to figure all that out!

  • Silly man! ;) Greatly explained.

  • great demo! i hope the q3 can get close to the sound quality of this one.

  • Informative and entertaining. Well done and thanks!
