Anybody who is in the military and likes Full Metal Jacket because "it is real" is a fucking idiot. The movie is a satire, pointing out just how terrible the military/war is. If you think its "badass" because you're in the military, you're missing the point and I hope you never reproduce.

a court judge gave him the choice of the military or jail in 1961, he became a marine that year, spent some time as a drill instructor in California from '65 to '67 and in 1968 Ermey arrived in Vietnam and spent 14 months. He then served two tours of duty in Okinawa, and in 1972 he was medically discharged for several injuries incurred during his tours. Ermey has symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder. Ermey was later bestowed with the honorary rank of Gunnery Sergeant by the Marine Corps.
