Thank you for your post. It gives me ideas in my approach to the film and what people might be interested in and since Ripley is such a famous character Highsmith created...this helps me greatly!
I truly hope you'll do a full documentary on the so complex and fascinating Patricia Highsmith, because it's obvious you feel the deepth. To read her work knowing her biography is such an amazing experience and, as a Swiss admirer of her, I was so lucky to visit the unique exhibition made few years ago by the Bern Federal Archives. The woman and the author, both equally complex, will never stop to fascinate me. Thank you very much for this document - and all my best wishes for your project ! ^_^
You are too kind. Thank you:) I will be posting another concept/test...feeling my way creatively speaking:)) My goal in the proposed documentary would be to capture that complex lady we love so much. Exploring the shadows she danced with in her writings and capturing the allure Highsmith continues to hold.
I never thought of Tom Ripley as psychopathic when I first saw the 1999 version of the movie. I was later surprised to learn that he is described as such by everyone.
Oh Mr. Tom Ripley so complex like the writer who created him:) Thank you for your post because if I end up doing a full fledge documentary on Highsmith...that's a good question to ask interviewees on their interpretation of who Tom Ripley was.
I discovered her work purely by accident when I was sixteen, and have been hooked ever since. I love the amorality, the pessimism, the meanness even, the slow unfolding pace of her stories, how her works are mysteries without solutions, because they're mysteries of the mind. Beautiful video.
I'm thrilled you liked the video. Initially, I created this piece for editing practice, but I've continued to be surprised on how many people like this little homage to Highsmith. The support and responses have encouraged me to investigate a bit further into creating a full length version. I've come to know that Highsmith has a very loyal and passionate fan base.
Deep Water - a fantastic book and her best portrait of a 'victimised man' in my opinion, but many of the 1950's and 60's titles are just as good. A very under-rated writier until recently.
I was fortunate enough to get her to sign a few of my first editions about 12 years ago, still have them.
she had beautiful hand-writing: very cursive and very european.
what was that sinister looking building with the boarded windows? it looked exactly like her stories... an ordinary artifact suddenly transforms itself into something suggestive - something dark and malevolent....
Yes, Kevin Macleod score is great! I appreciate you taking the time to post your thoughts. Patricia is a fascinating woman who created unforgettable characters which I would like to explore in a full length version.
Thank you. It's a mini documentary/homage to Patricia. I've received people's inquiry whether I'm doing a full fledge documentary on Patricia. I'm still trying to locate the 2004 documentary done by BBC, but I'm entertaining the notion to do it...more and more...once I'm done with another documentary project.
This mini documentary is very well done and left me wanting for more. Yes, alexander3699, please produce an in depth documentary on this fascinating writer! Thank you! (BTW, my real name is Guy Haines!)
Why thank you, Mr. Haines! I very much appreciate your support and feedback. I'm already starting to form ideas of how I would approach the documentary on Patricia Highsmith in a longer format. Creating the same feel from the mini version.
Wonderful! Keep us all up to date! I wish I had attempted to write Patricia Highsmith. For some reason, I thought she had passed away many years ago. I've always wondered where she got the name "Guy Haines".
the real question is... why did she feed her pet snails with salt?

People called Ripley a psychopath because it was the easiest way to describe somebody who defied one word descriptions

Hello,
Regarding the building, I believe it's one of the places Patricia lived in New York.
Thanks so much for your post and observations of Patricia. Very insightful.

Hey Alexander.....
Thanks for the reply.......
I am on a private "journey".....always.....to seek out "treasures" such as Ms. Highsmith!
Funny thing......as a Hitchcock fan, I've enjoyed STRANGERS ON A TRAIN many many times on TCM.......that is what intially drew me to Highsmith.
Best wishes,
Kathleen
